just saw a pigeon doing the puffed up courtship dance thing to another pigeon, and as he was strutting around he suddenly stopped for a split second to do a very brief preen-peck at his own side, then returned to the strutting around. and i surprised myself by instantly losing respect for the male pigeon in that moment, like come on man i appreciate you had an itch or whatever but how is she supposed to feel special when you're getting distracted by bullshit like that? which on reflection i don't endorse, i mean those are pretty harsh dating norms i'm imposing on these pigeons, from a total outsider perspective, for no reason. probably not all girl pigeons are as uptight about that sort of thing as i would apparently be if i was a girl pigeon, maybe she even found it endearing who knows, i don't know her. it's none of my business really. sorry pigeons.

I’m reading this book about the changing arctic and the author stayed with the Nunamiut people of inland alaska for a while and talked to this high school kid who was like “ugh I hate going to school in the spring I wish I was hunting caribou” and I thought that was charming. you often hear about people who are devoted to preserving their traditional culture and knowledge but it’s rare to hear about someone who’s invested in the old ways out of pure teenage selfishness. school is lame and hunting caribou is awesome

i dont think we need to pretend "why cant you just be xyz" from cis queer people (or, far more often than people like to admit, other trans people who date closet cases) is about some abstract push for good queer representation or whatever. it is about exactly the same thing that leads to straight people saying it. sexual availability and control over someone. when a gay guy tells a trans woman, or a lesbian tells a trans guy, or etc, that they should consider being a cis gnc person, it is a desire to have sexual access to that trans person. it is knowing transition could mean they stop being willing to be told what to do with their life and body, including no longer being sexually available to people who want to tell them what to do with those.
