For weeks, you had moved through the tower with the smooth, practiced caution of a fugitive raccoon. No birthdate on the shared calendar. No mention of zodiac signs. No comments about being older. No wistful glances at bakery windows when John dragged everyone past them on the way back from training.

You were safe.

For exactly nine minutes after breakfast.

His mouth tilted.

“No cake,” you said quickly. “I’m allergic to sugar.”

“You put chocolate syrup on it.”

“For balance.”

Bob’s brow furrowed. “I don’t think that’s how allergies work.”

“Fine,” Bucky said. “Candles, then.”

You twisted in your chair.

“Yes,” Bucky said. “That’s the thing.”

You swallowed.
