Finally completed after seven months!
“The Shape of Travel”

The shape of this painting is the shape of my travels. Â The digital storage of photos taken with our devices shows a raw progression of movement through time, and shows the concentration and distribution of places and moments I chose to document. Â The visual effect of the massing and compression of the images both simplifies the documentation and creates a new format of dense visual information that at first may look random, but in fact shows a progression of movement through the world. Â
 The painting is made up of small images based on a section of photographs I took in 2018 and is made up of 244 images. The shape of the painting is determined by the position of the specific photos as they appear on the laptop. The scenes are a chronological documentation of a trip that encompasses a week in July and includes a flight to Italy and four locations I visited that week. Â
 What interested me was the visual result of the decisions I made throughout the year (and in the case of the painting, one week of a trip to Italy), as shown in the storage format of the computer.  For example, I took an inordinate number of flying photos which made a big blue swath through the photo conglomeration. The resulting work shows my progression in one slice of time in one year, and revealed a pattern of seeing.  The series of places highlights the way we see, what we choose to capture, and records our presence in the world.
