There are little pieces of history scattered all over the New York City subway. This doorway, long since out of use, once led from The Times Square station into the Knickerbocker Hotel on Bway and 42nd. Once upon a time that was a fashionable hotel (it's rumored the martini was invented there). The hotel is gone but the Beaux Arts building is still there. It was Newsweek's HQ for a while and now houses condos and a Gap. The stairway, unfortunately, goes nowhere. (at MTA Subway - 42nd St/Times Square/Port Authority (A/C/E/N/Q/R/S/1/2/3/7))
