Studying history is a never-ending project
how to start being productive (failing 101 - part 2)
Hello everyone! Iām back! I have been really focusing on my studies and didnāt have time for Tumblr, but it feels good to be back.
If you have read my last post, you probably got here looking for answers on how to keep going after a big setback. If you havenāt, let me link you to it and Iāll see you later when youāve had read it.Ā
So, youāve failed an exam. Maybe youāve failed a couple of them. Maybe youāre failing a class. Itās not the end of the world. Compose yourself, remind yourself of your worthiness, and letās dive into productiveness with a possitive approach.
Change your mindset: whether you have failed this specific subject on your first semester and are now entering the second, or you need to take an exam to try and save a class - start with the right mindset. Remind yourself that you are NOT your mistakes, your past is your past (and, therefore, your past self who has failed is not you anymore). You have been given a chance of starting again and redeeming yourself, donāt blow it off by doubting yourself or loosing your confidence. You are capable of great things. You did not come this far only to come this far.
Start fresh: if you are entering a new semester and your failed exam is behind you, start anew. Buy new supplies, take your old notes that are laying in sight - judging your past mistakes - away and stack them in a drawer (or throw them away if you wonāt need them in the future). If you have new classes, start them with a positive mindset: you will not only think that you can pass them, you actually will!
Track everything down: whether you are more into planners, goodĀ āol post-it notes, whiteboards or just phone apps - it is important that you keep track of everything. I, myself, use a combination of methods - I have this app on my phone where I track everything as soon as I get told (assignments and homework, essentially), while I also like to print (or make) a couple of calendars to track exams and asignments down so I will be able to see it on a monthās glance. I found tracking everything down helps you be mindful of everything you have to do so you can get more productive, which immediately leads me to the next point.
Start early: if you are a serial procastinator, this will take more work - but you will get there! As soon as you are informed of your tasks (and you have tracked them down somewhere, so you can see how much time you actually have on your hands) start doing something. You can start on the task (if you find it easy or really dislike it, so you can totally forget about it afterwards), you can plan what youāre going to do or you can divide it into segments so youāll have enough time to do it (i.e.: if your asignment is due in a week, you can divide the total work in 5/6 days and save the last one for revision).
Donāt be afraid to ask for help: this is a point I, personally, have struggled a lot with throughout my entire school years. Sometimes we are mocked for asking when weāre kids, or we see it happen to other people and it is common for us to associate having doubts and trouble understading certain topics with being dumb and that is NOT the case. We are in school to learn and in college I have found professors find it very helpful if you ask them questions, they appreciate them as it gives them feedback. So if youāre struggling, donāt be afraid to ask, whether youāre confident enough to ask infront of the class or prefer to email teachers of talk to them privately in their office hours.
As a bonus, I am adding a quote that I like to think of to become my most productive self:Ā āFailure is a bruise, not a tattooā - Jon Sinclaire.
Thank you so much for reading! As always, if you have any doubts do not hesitate to contact me - whether you need help with one of these steps, advice of how to tackle a certain subject or need to talk about school stress (a gal has been through ALL of it). I will keep on uploading posts that I hope are helpful for all of you.Ā

Itās funny because in college I could lose a night of sleep and be no different for it, but now that Iām older my GOD do I need to sleep more lol. I canāt bounce back anymore.Ā

failing exams 101
I think it is safe to say that I am an expert at failing exams. I have failed exams throughout my 6 years of high school (yes, we are in high school for 6 years in Spain).Ā I have failed because I didnāt study enough, because I didnāt study at all (I was THE worst at 13), beacause my studying methods were not exactly correct and even because I trusted myself a little too much.Ā
I used to be ashamed of this, especially on a community like Studyblr where everyone seems like a straight A student (and probably is, props to that!), but Iāve decided to keep it real and maybe help other people on my situation.Ā
So here are my tips on how to act after failing a (or mutliple) exam(s):
Trust your emotions: I am one of those people who needs to mourn and feel shitty about themselves to actually DO something about it. Whether you are like me or not, it is very important to focus on your emotions. What are you feeling? Are you sad? Angry? Happy? Do you feel nothing at all? Take notes. Answer these questions. Who are you angry with? Yourself? Your professor(s)? I think it is KEY to allow yourself to feel everything before you can process and move to the next things.
Think slowly: After letting yourself feel all your feelings, you should sit down and think slowly. What where the actions that have led me to this situation? Maybe you havenāt studied as much as you thought, maybe you didnāt sleep enough before the exam or maybe that class is not for you. Either way, it is necessary to cool down and try to think straight. You will not get anything clear if youāre still processing your emotions. Give yourself time.Ā
Talk to someone (if that fails, write it down): some of us are not able to manage our feelings by ourselves, and that is completely okay. Sometimes we just need a shoulder to cry on, or a person who will listen and lead us to the right conclussions (or just listen, we often get to that conclussions alone). If you are not cofortable with oversharing, there are other ways to let it all out! Grab a notebook (or a journal, if you already have one) and write down all of your frustrations. You will check that having all of your troubles written down makes them easier to tackle.Ā
Get to work: okay, you have tackled the first three steps, and you are on the right mindset. What now? I would suggest you get right to work. If youāre having trouble with a certain topic (or even if it is the entire subject thatās wearing you down) I would suggest you start doing research. Get all of your class notes and everything you have used to study and circle all the things that you didnāt understand as clearly as the rest. Use the internet or another tipe of resources to get to know the subject better. Email you professors or go see them if you have doubts, they will most likely guide you in what youāre doing wrong.Ā
The final product: if you have the chance to take that exam again, become an expert on the subject. Iāve found that many of my classmates and even myself start hating a class or a certain professor just because they have failed the exam. Donāt. This will only be a waste of time and energy for you. Be wise with your time. Use it to become the best at the subject you werenāt totally prepared for.Ā
When in doubtā¦: if you are studying and still doubting youself because of your past failure on that test, remember to take care of yourself. Remind yourself how capable you are. Practice self care when you are feeling extremely stressed. Find what helps you keep on track. It might be looking at othersā studyblrs to get inspo, talking to friends who are going through the same things you are. What I found really helps me are quotes, I have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to quotes to keep me going, and whenever Iām feeling down, Iāll take a look at them (I might even do a post with my favorites). I also love listening to motivational podcasts or reading about influential figures who were onceĀ āfailuresā.
Remember to keep going and never doubt yourself. As one of my favorite quotes says: āBe careful not to seeĀ āfailureā as a sign that youāre on the wrong path. Failure is nothing more than a test of how badly you want something. So maybe you need to try something better, but always try again.ā - Sam Brown
As always, make sure to message me if youāre having trouble with any of the steps. I am always open to listening to other people and trying to do my best by offering advice. Let me know if youād like me to do a post on motivational quotes, feedback is always appreciated.
more things influence our mood than we think. the littlest things like not making our bed, being around certain people, seeing things that normalize bad coping mechanisms on social media, listening to a song that triggers negative emotions, checking someone who shouldnāt be in your life anymore,Ā obsessing over thoughts that make you feel unworthy or anxiousā¦itās time to stay closer to things that make us feel warm and happy and removing (or distancing ourselves) from things that make us feel sad at night
