I told my wife that people on the R.E.M. subreddit keep misspelling the song "Kohoutek" as "Kahoutek"--a pity, as I have a fondness for the song, and Fables of the Reconstruction is my favorite of their albums.

She asked me in return, "well, does Michael Stipe sing it with an "a" or an "o"?"

I replied that he has never enunciated anything, ever, but it was named after both a real comet and a person. We decided to put the song on to assess.

I was treated to my wife's face scrunching up more and more like Kermit the Frog's before she finally said "...oh my god, there are words to this and not just sounds?" Admittedly, the car speakers did not help.

The final verdict did not land on a definitive "a" or "o", but she did settle on a firm statement: if her pipes got haunted, they would sound very much like Kohoutek.

This entire album is massively underappreciated, even in the context of Van's other work. The composition on "Cul De Sac" is both so layered and so gentle, that kind of lovely folk nostalgia that the whole album is suffused with, and the vocals are well and away incredible.
