I have seen the mountain goats lyric "we are guardians of a rare thing" used frequently in various fic titles and it gets me every single time because the whole song is about someone who will always feel that something is missing, even in the most ideal of circumstances. It is a song that john darnielle refuses to play at weddings despite frequent requests. So every time im very curious about whether the darker undertones of the song will be at all present in the fic, or if the author is misinterpreting the song. Or perhaps it is simply a phrase that they heard and liked the sound of, without thinking about the greater body to which the limb is attached.
