Noatak & Tarrlok by Official Avatar Legends Artist Lyla Hammar. Lyla, who designed the cover of Avatar Legends: Masters of the Elements Volume 1 as well as various illustrations from Beast of the Four Nations, does a beautiful job juxtaposing the brothers' unequal bloodbending skill levels. Notice how Noatak's controlled, effortless pose contrasts with Tarrlok's intense, concentrated form. Even their expressions highlight the disparity between the two brothers!

An enchantingly dynamic piece, Sung ponders the question as to whether these tragic brothers deserve a second chance. He imagines them at peace together in the afterlife, whatever form that may take!

As for the piece itself, love myself a tag team. I really think they'd be an unstoppable duo, only defeatable by Avatars and powerful spirits. While I'm glad the story ended as it did, as I mentioned many times before, I'd kill for an opportunity for these two to work as a duo on some grand adventure. It would be fun to see such different worldviews clash. And they're both geniuses in their own way, so who knows what schemes they could hatch up! The illustration is a grand demonstration of the powerful potential these two together hold!

Anyway, we are lucky enough Shin actually talked about the piece itself in an Instagram reel. As he says, he wanted to give them a happy afterlife. This reminds me of a conversation I had with Janet Varney (Korra's AMAZING voice actress) where I asked her how she imagines the afterlife works for Tarrlok and Noatak. I brought up the point that naturally, people reincarnate. But in rare cases, such as enlightenment or contact with a spirit near death, people ascend into the spirit world (as seen with Zhao and Iroh). So most likely, they simply reincarnated. She proposed the fun idea that perhaps they both reincarnated and manifested in the spirit world. This really confused me. How could a spirit be in two places at once? But then that idea manifested into a really fun thought for me. A spirit is not a human. Their nature is different from ours, so the life cycle of a spirit (upon death of human body) may be complex and in some ways unfathomable to us. For example, in this piece, Noatak and Tarrlok are bending. But most spirits (especially those ascended from humans) don't seem to be capable of bending (with exception of those such as lion turtles and the whole energy bending mechanism that many spirits possess). And if Noatak & Tarrlok reincarnated, they certainly would have different lives with new personalities and appearance. So how can they both bend, be dead, and look as themselves? What are the ways in which "afterlife" can manifest? I encourage you to think outside the box in terms of how we seem to understand death in the avatarverse. There's many avenues and realms beyond the material world that have yet to be explored. And I'm excited to see them one day!

The Community Manager of Avatar Legends: Realms Collide confirmed in an AMA just now that development cycles per character takes about 6-12 months. Assuming worst case scenario, that means we can expect Tarrlok to be released no later than August 10th 2026, likely much earlier! Rejoice!!! And the developer confirmed he is still indeed coming along with other fan favorites such as Rangi and Kya! Shout out to the awesome Rangi and Kya community who also helped vouch for our boy! We just gotta hold out for 8 more months!!
