Six-Word Memoirs at the End of July
Life: one razor's slit from extinction. A fear coddled returns for acknowledgement. July, when even heroes commit suicide. My former self deserves the accolades. Undressing Andrew Bird and touching myself. My former therapist said "it's hopeless". My current therapist admits his love. I'm moving towards my last chance. How have I outlived Sylvia Plath?
"750 Days"
Sometimes at night I want to tell you about the geraniums in Florence. My room never really gets dark, and I picture those wilted petals fallen to the grass, and at the bottom of the pot, and I want you to see red the way I saw it. There’s a crack in my wall I wish you knew was there, it...
My life passed in waiting rooms. I’ve never regretted finishing a run. Drinking is always the wrong decision. Mornings are when I’m most alive. The pain lingers behind the compulsion. My scarred arm is still useful. The sight of blood demands attention. Blood and bones aren’t easily...

April Thoughts in Six-Word Phrases
Sunshine replenishes waning enthusiasm for life. Yellow dusk is identical to dawn. April is an opening and aperture. Poems wash in through melting snow. April’s mania and depression are cruel. Constant scents of dew, mud, rain…
Painted Black (A poem in progress)
Painted Black
“I see a red door and I want it painted black”.                          - Rolling Stones
The lavender I wore was wrong. Just as your cowlick and large feet stood out like cheaply framed art the night I buried my face in the crook of your shoulder feigning affection.
It was pastel spring and I was thin-skinned and veiny against your chest, listlessly coursing my hips beneath your hands.
"Zen in Early Spring"
Motherless Remorse
Motherless Remorse I thought once, hoped you were healed at the place I was taken from you.
Of three layers I prayed two scarred through and whole. I had skin, have skin. Health came, has come so insistently, I dismiss a wound’s claim to mortality.
I am blessed, achingly spared any permanent un-severing.
I survive myself unfailingly, layer by layer corporeal, three decades of vitality.
I thank your body at its broken core. I think (and hope) you healed.
- C.M. Swaney

In sorrow, pretend to be fearless. In happiness, tremble." - Jane Hirshfield
"And if the earthly should forget you, say to the silent loam: I flow. To the rushing water speak: I am."
- Rainer Maria Rilke Â
