I couldnât sleep so I decided to write a short fic, donât expect it to be great or anything
CW//Discussion of death and Mortality
A yellow cat slipped into the tent of his favorite person, Leshyâs of course. It had become a habit at this point and he didnât event need to ask for entry, the two had become so aquatinted with each other. Heck the lamb even joked about building a shelter they could share. But for now, they met like this. The yellow cat witnessed as his dearest bagworm layed on his back, his neck now adorned with a new garment. A golden skull necklace. The cat kneeled beside his companion, hand slowly tracing its way to the necklace. He carefully felt around the engravings and its surface before speaking up.
âLeshy, what is this? Did you make it?â He looked at the worm who only tilted his head slightly.â
âAh.. no. It was gifted to me by the lamb. They said it would help meâŚ. adjust.â His hand rose to meet the yellow catâs palm, feeling its delicate form in his claws as he spoke.
âAdjust you say? Are you still having troubles here, you donât seem to show distress lately.â It was hard not to pry, as Leshy had been a completely different person since the day he was indoctrinated. At first, confused and frustrated with this new way of life. Speaking out nonsenses that no other follower paid mind to, all except the yellow cat. He had always been patient with the worm no matter how difficult it was. And eventually, Leshy settled down and grew closer to him. To hear that the worm might be suffering in silence was surprising.
ââŚâ Leshy thought about how to approach this, his old life could never be summed up in mere words. Regardless he would try his best as his companion liked to listen to as much as he could. âI suppose I have been quiet about some things. I didnât think it would be something a mortal could graspâŚ. When I was tending to the garden, I nicked myself, not the end of the world but, the blood ran crimson. I have a limited time on this earth just like everyone elseâŚâ He intertwined his fingers with the yellow catâs and the necklace. âAnd so⌠the lamb thought this could bring back an old sort of.. comfort? It is claimed the necklace will not let you age a day so long as you wear it. You will remain the same until the end of time.âThe yellow cat lowered to his level, laying his head on the wormâs chest.
âYou are scared of dying?â The worm simply nodded in response to him. âThere is no need to fear Leshy.â The worm scoffed at him.
âThat is nonsense, who wouldnât be? Hundreds grovel at the very thought of getting hurt let alone dying. You should be scared too. There will be a time when you pass on and you never know when. It could even be tomorrow.â
âWell firstly, Iâm a cat Leshy.. we have 9 lives.â He chuckled. âBut to be honest with you, I only need the one.â Leshy tilted his head.
âThatâs right. Just one. You see.. while I may not be here forever, Iâm grateful for the time I have now. Every minute counts, I cherish the moments that Iâm able to live through. And with that, if I were to die tomorrow, I would die fulfilled with myself.â He smiled at Leshy.
âBut what if you could live forever. You would take it would you?â
âIt sounds nice on paper but I wouldnât. You must understand Leshy, to live forever is to watch the world change around you. To watch the ones you love come and go. To live on without them, the only memory existing in your head as new generations come along. I wouldnât want to watch my loved ones die. Iâd die with them.â Leshyâs hand slid down from his necklace.
âThat is true. But I will live on in their memoryâ The yellow cat brushed their hand along the wormâs mossy face. His head melted into the touch, almost drawn to it like a magnet. âDid any of that help you at all?â
ââŚâ It gave him more questions than answers, however, he felt an odd sense of reassurance. There was an interest to hear more despite him not understanding the mindset. Though for now he felt like he had enough. âIn a way you can say it did.â He turned to face his companion, noticing that the sun had began to set from the opening in his tent. âIt is getting late isnât it? Are you going to head to your tent?â
âAh about thatâŚâ The yellow cat looked sheepishly to the side. âIt collapsed⌠could I stay here for the night?â
âPhah! I told you thereâs no need to ask, besides you clearly made yourself at home already.â Leshy looked at his companion who was practically snuggled against him at this point.
âOops.. sorry about that.â The yellow cat lessened their grasp on Leshy shyly. In response they were met with the strong embrace of the worm, inviting them to get closer to him. The two nestled against each other as nightfall approached, Leshy eventually closed off the tent to allow them to rest peacefully.
