I’m currently reading John Green’s “Everything Is Tuberculosis” and I’m obsessed. I can’t stop talking about tuberculosis statistics.

The book is also making me really mad at the global healthcare system. So many people are in need of good tests and drugs for tuberculosis but they lack the funding to get access to these things.

Also, people keep telling me that tuberculosis is like an “old-time-y” disease that no one really gets anymore. This also makes me mad because tuberculosis has been the deadliest contagious disease for AGES (except in 2020, when it was COVID). I just want to tell them, “do you realize how privileged you have to be to see tuberculosis as a disease from the past?”

SPOILERS FOR THE SECRET HISTORY!!

So… who was gonna tell me that this book has INCEST?!?!

Mannn I was really liking Charles too 😭😭 I should’ve known it was too good to be true.

I don’t even know what to make of Camilla… I guess I always knew that Richard’s perception of her was all in his head, and that he was totally not a reliable narrator, but suspecting Camilla’s manipulation and actually finding out about it are two different things.

In the first chapter of the book, I actually thought Francis was a bit of an oddball. He’s quickly becoming one of my favorite characters, though.

Meanwhile, I originally really liked Henry, but he’s getting on my nerves, with the way he just commands Richard and Charles to do the dirty work while making everything worse for them.

Well… all the characters are difficult to like, aren’t they?

I have a little less than 100 pages left in the book, which is a relief because I’ve been reading it for nearly a month now. I think the problem is that I never want it to end. I want to be trapped in its world forever, even though it’s like a downward spiral.

One of my favorite things about The Secret History is the fact that these characters are some truly horrible people. None of the Greek students are actual good people. They have their good moments but then they go and reveal a secret they have and I’m like WHAT THE HELL?

But the best part is how much I like them despite how horrible these characters are. They’re messed up but I can’t help but like them. Maybe that’s just me, or maybe that’s just because I’m reading this in Richard’s point of view, but these eccentric misfits are so intriguing.
