Wait, less than 20% of high schools in the US start after 8:30? 8:30 was my early class twice a week in year 11 because I had a combined class with other schools in town. 7:45 starts once a week for vocal ensemble were the freaking worst thing in the history of bad things. WHAT TIME ARE YOU PEOPLE STARTING SCHOOL????

My high school started at 7:34, but if you wanted a spot in the parking lot, you had to be there at around 6:50 (or 7:00 if you were feeling really risky). The school I teach at starts at 8:10, and THANK GOD FOR THAT. My boyfriend and I are talking moving in together next year, and among other things I’ll be giving up (my babies! my department head!) if I’m the one to relocate, my start time is one of them that will break my heart.

My high school started at 7:40, but my mom (who is also a teacher) starts at 7:20

7:20 IS WHEN I USED TO GET OUT OF BED TO BE AT MY OFFICE JOB THAT STARTED AT 9 AM. YOUR COUNTRY IS MESSED UP.

Delayed Sleep Phase Reaction is real. At my first school, teacher report time as 6:45, and the first bell rang at 7:13. Kids would stand at the bus stop starting at 5:45 to get the school bus and sit in first period dead behind the eyes. I would have to wake up at 5 to leave early enough to get to school on time. As far as where I live, the reason start times are so early for public schools is so the school bus drivers can have two (or more!) contracts. They pick up the public school kids super early and drop them off at their school sites and then go back and shuttle the catholic/private school kids. Then they get back to the public schools to do their field trips and whatnot. 

My middle school take in is 8:30. I have NEVER gone to or taught at a school with such a late intake. The only reason why we have one so late is because of the lack of busses/bus drivers in our area. The busses either pick up the high school or elementary school students before running our routes. The downside of it is that end of day dismissal is staggered. I stop getting paid at 3:40 but sometimes I stay as late as 4:15 because I still have kids waiting on their ride. But geeze, do we see the difference in our kids. 

I second @dwendog’s outrage. What kind of a school start time is that??

It’s really weird to see all these different start times with applying to schools. From elementary to middle we all started around eight and for our around three. Anything else I’m not used to haha. The school I’ll be working at starts at 7:45 and ends at 2:15 but teachers are required to be there from 7:15 to 3:15. I’ve always had an issue with waking up, being alert, and having energy which I think may be because of depression. We’ll see how I do when it comes to early rising. I feel bad for those kids that don’t get enough sleep because of the start times. No matter the age.

Some of these start times are disgusting. I may not be out of bed at those times. My school that I’m teaching at starts school at 8:57 and ends at 3:19. I’m one of the earliest teachers at the school and I arrive around 8:15.

The first district I worked in had middle schools starting at 8:25, but teachers had to be there at 8. District I’m in now has middle schools starting at 8, and teachers have to be there by 7:45. I’ve always been one of the first, if not the first, person to school around 6:30.

My current school will be starting next year at 725 and will be dismissing at 310. We added fifteen minutes (10 in the morning and 5 in the afternoon) to our bell schedule to accommodate an 8 period day + 1 hour lunch period and I’m over it.

I’m middle school and teachers are required to be there from 7:45 to 4. Kids in class from 8:30 to 3:30. Buses usually get them there around 8 before going back to get the high schoolers.

My high schoolers start at 7:05 everyday! Trust me what we wouldn't give for the extra 20 minutes to start at 7:25.

I had a student named Sonny this year.... he didn’t live up to my expectations...

and it starts… I knew her estate would be a bunch of asshats. 

On a related note, I got an e-mail from the English department at my school today saying they are missing 3 class sets (148 copies) of this very book.....

also, a game where the culprit goes by the name of the “Black Cat” AND NO CAT??!?!?!
