Theo is incredibly driven by his feelings and emotions, which is both his greatest strength and weakness. It made him incredibly incompatible with Nan, because his constant declarations were overwhelming to her and left her no room to sort out her own feelings.

Nan didn't even know who she was as a person after her life was shattered by the revelation that she's an illegitimate child. Figuring out how she felt about both Guy and Theo while dealing with societal pressures added so much confusion on top of that.

Which is why Guy's greatest character flaw actually makes him perfect for Nan, because his hesitance and fear actually gave Nan the time to figure out how she felt about him before he confessed his feelings for her.

While Theo being so driven by emotions made him wrong for Nan, it also made him PERFECT for Lizzy. Because Lizzy NEEDS that clarity! Her trauma stems from Seadown's hidden intentions with her, and Theo is genuinely incapable of hiding his feelings and intentions.

Even Theo's one attempt at hiding his feelings just betrayed what was in his heart. And despite Lizzy's anger here making him try and backtrack for a moment, he still caved and told her how he feels only seconds later.
