i honestly think that it would have been a bad thing if bruce had ignored everything jason had done and immediately accepted him into the fold because the second that gets boiled down it it's bare bones, all that's left is a billionaire that lets his love for his son blind him to the legitimate crimes his son has committed and shield him from the consequences that any other person would have to face, that the billionaire himself has brought other people to face, and doesn't that sound awfully like real life?

i remember reading this one fic where bruce shoots joker, to jason's shock, kisses his forehead and says he doesn't care about anything except his son. (meanwhile the fic itself chooses to include bludhaven exploding in the background, supposedly to emphasize that bruce is choosing this over thousands of civilian lives?). the fic had an end note which said that this is what uth would have been like if bruce had "acted like a parent". i don't know what some of these people think being a parent or a family member entails. overlooking the faults of people we love is not bad, but when it comes to people covering up or ignoring full blown crimes for their loved ones, that doesn't stay under "fault" anymore. it turns into a story of someone benefitting from their parents' love and connections and power to exclude themselves from the "justice" they make other face. how could batman ever be taken seriously be a crime fighter when his own son's crimes face no justice? the whole fantasy of jason quits guns (or even continues killing) and is immediately welcomed back into the family and bringing up his past crimes makes him sad and angry so don't bring it up or you're being a meanie is so tonedeaf. killing isn't just a political opinion difference between father and son if the son is actively killing people he deems unworthy of living. why does only this murderer get a ticket out of redemption and face no justice when his whole motive for his crimes is that murderers face no justice? and the only reason remaining that his dad loves him very much and has the resources to shove his crimes under the rug, does not paint a picture of a good parent or even a good person at all. i don't think jason needs to be punished or whatever but bruce being mean to him sometimes while he's a murderer isn't "being a bad parent".

tldr: i think bruce should be meaner, why make characters have completely conflicting beliefs if they are supposed to freely make exceptions for each other when its convenient

a lot of people want this fictional idealized relationship where the parent (or love interest) will do anything for The Character and while i'm definitely not opposed to that i think it doesn't really have a place in Jason and Bruce's relationship. especially because being Batman's son did earn Red Hood a lot of leniency in the greater hero community and the fact that Bruce never threw Jason in jail IS already a massive amount of favoritism. love isn't about breaking your principles for people, or at least it shouldn't be
