a true dc comics fan will always speak ill of dc comics
I think a huge part of why I find Nightwing so interesting is because Dick Grayson, as a character, was never really meant to be an adult. right. but now he's a 20-something and you have to ask what that childhood does to someone, and you have to take it seriously because of the tone shift we've had. and it turns out the answer is Not Great! he was raised to do this One Thing and he's REALLY GOOD at doing that one thing and, well, not really anything else. apartment's a mess. can't maintain relationships. bad at making new ones. arguably suicidal. he's obsessive about his "job" (that doesn't pay him) to the exclusion of all else because That's where he got reinforcement. and he's a very kind person! but he was taught to never prioritize himself and everything suffers as a result.
basically I think it's really awesome that his life sucks.

well if there's no girls in it then it automatically sucks shit okays?
phone somehow autocorrected "the joker" to "the worker." why so devoid of class consciousness, batman
they should make another one of those comics where bruce wayne is a grizzled old man who retired from batman long ago and a plucky new preteen shows up wanting to be the next robin and bring the legend of batman back to life or whatever. and dick grayson shows up at some point as is wont to happen and she's a middle aged woman
TOMBOYISH YOUNG HEROINE in a red t shirt and green shorts, sitting dejectedly at the bar: I mean, you should see him, it's like he's lost all will to be a hero -- all will to live! maybe if you talked to him, you could wake up that fire within him -- it is you, isn't it? the one who started it all, the first one...
KATHERINE "KITTY" GRAYSON, 47: for the last time kid they won't let me sell alcohol to minors
kitty grayson reappears at the end-of-second-act crisis when tomboyish young heroine gets put in horrible danger and bruce pushes her away after patching her up and stumbles into a dive bar to lick his wounds. she's like hey we close in 20— bruce? and he stays after close and they talk. and she makes some plot-relevant comments and references to The Incident that made him quit and says something about how batman is his life's mission and this new kid's got enough spunk to be robin. and then he's like the years we spent together... though you couldn't be your truest self... they were good weren't they? and she's like they were the best. and then the plot progresses and i start skimming cause i was only reading this for kitty
comics are like if a single graphic novel was cut up into 50 really thin books and also every full book in the series is made by an author who proudly doesn't know who the main character is nor has read anything with them in it
1. Be tormented by it
2. Convince yourself you like it actually, to survive
3. Seek it out, because you like it
4. Return to top of list

"we all want something that will last forever. but what we get is love." nightwing (1996) #112
"batman would say that morals are the bottom lines, the thing that lasts. i've heard him say that no matter what depend on yourself to respond with predetermined ethical integrity. i know that's true for him, but i'm not so sure i agree with the principle in general. i think most of us surprise ourselves a lot. most of us run on the fly. maybe what matters most is the person we're hoping to impress. for years and years, i tried to evaluate every move i made through batman's eyes. i was morally reliable, almost predictable. whether or not he actually held me accountable to standard i set for myself in his name was irrelevant. i was inspired. when i finally let go of that. i was lost. i could still operate on habit, but everything felt empty. i didn't belong to anyone. i had nothing to live up to. for a short, wonderful while i had barbara, and that worked, that was more than enough. she was a friend an intimate and an inspiration. and she was smart enough to know i still had some growing up to do. suddenly, i have a whole new appreciation for batman. having someone count on you for their physical and emotional safely is intense. it's another another set of expectations you have to live up to. and maybe they're even more demanding than the ones you set up yourself. ultimately, i'm sure we have to grow to become our own judges, and mentors, and charges. and i'm also sure that that's going to be the hardest goal of all to live up to." nightwing (1996) #112
the lines following that one
you can tell a character is loved when their fans constantly wish immense physical and psychological harm on them
