i find this kind of line work extremely meditative because due to the curve i can't flick the pen like with crosshatching, it all has to be deliberate. that said it takes a really long time and i prefer just doing it for things that need some kind of uniformity in tone!
it’s actually quite easy to take over a small local government group if you really want to, bc if you volunteer consistently people will just put you in charge of whatever. I’m now one of like three people at a nature preserve making official decisions about trails, putting in a prairie, and designing a series of illustrations for a storybook trail etc., and it’s just because last summer I started coming over once a week to help the naturalist out for a couple hours. Mine now. you too can steal an organization and shape it to your will 🫵

The drumbeat was louder at every step. The coals glowed more brightly as the sunlight left the windows. By the time he reached the edge of the fire bed he was nearly in a state of trance. He waited at the edge of the fire. He could no longer see his audience, no longer see anything but the coals and the wavering air above them and the brilliant gems of the islands in the spaces between. He could not hear anything but the combined drumbeat and heartbeat in his breast. He could not think of the heat: only the shape of the fire.
