we've also seen the far side of the moon before - every apollo mission besides 9 was designed to leave the earth's orbit and enter the moon's orbit at various points. they all caught glimpses of various slivers of the far side of the moon, and all of them took photos. apollo 13 (because of the onboard accident and crisis which aborted their moon landing) and artemis 2 are the only moon missions where the astronauts didn't enter lunar orbit and just did a flyby, using the moon's gravity to slingshot them back to earth.

but the artemis ii astronauts were able to travel more distantly from the moon than apollo 13 did, which made them the first people in human history to ever see the ENTIRE far side of the moon (as the AI-generated photo attempts to depict) and is why they have traveled farther from earth than anyone has before
