solangelo is not a good ship (canonically)
i feel as though their relationship had so much potential but rick (and mark) absolutely fumbled with the sun and the star and court of the dead. both nico and will’s characters had so much potential for being dynamic, complex, and well-written characters, but instead they were written with no depth or real personality besides the stereotypes that come with their parents. both tsats and tcotd ruined whatever chemistry and complexity there was in there relationship by making them both uncharacteristically self-centered and insensitive.
I also wish that instead of just watching them go to tartarus and learning about their relationship in rushed explanations that make little to no sense, we could’ve had a mini book about their relationship and how it formed. It feels like we know a little bit about nico while knowing absolutely nothing about will. I wish we could learn more about each character. Also he’s drastically mischaracterized both boys. After reading nico’s pov in BoO and then reading it again in tsats, i noticed a lot of differences in how nico acts, thinks, and speaks. he used to be such a complex character who while always brooding, acted with compassion and thoughtfulness in everything he did, but in tsats he’s frequently annoyed by will instead of being at least a little sensitive to the fact that the sun child has no sun. will also begins to act the same way in where he was first described as caring and protective of nico, but in tsats he’s very insensitive of nico when criticizing the underworld.
i know this is a children’s book/series but i really feel like rick saw the worst parts of the fanon content and ran with it. i was really disappointed by this because solangelo has always had a special place in my heart. also random observation, but the quality of solangelo fics had severely gone down after this because no one really knows what to do with tsats, especially when trying to write canon fics as opposed to aus. ok thanks for reading guys!
