everytime dungeon meshi focuses on characters outside of the touden party you can really feel the looming horror of the dungeon,, only the touden party is having a silly fun time by virtue of eating the horrors

@ yves-and-scessernee: with faith and perseverance, one day we will sauté the horrors"

Exact context of this scene btw
You're not always nice, but you're kind.
my mom was trying to chew through some really tough steak and she turned to me and said “just call me The Gnawer.” she would do numbers here
she told me she doesn't remember saying this. quote, "must have been steak-induced hysteria"
happy mother's day to this crazy broad
my mom’s old house had a wood burning stove for heating and sometimes when it was cold we’d stand in front of it, but one day she was turning around in front of it so that her back and front got equally warm, and she said “just call me rotisserie Tina” and to this day Rotisserie Tina is my contact name for her in my phone
let this be your sign to just go watch the supergirl movie, please dont let a bunch if misogynistic bad reviews get the best of you

This is just my opinion as a Canadian, but it has always seemed to me that America, as a culture, fundamentally has always thought that killing people is kind of cool.
Like, you look at rates of serial killers by country and no one else is even fucking close. If you look at American movies and television that are considered "high culture", it's all stuff like Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Godfather, etc. I actually happen to like a lot of those shows, but they are about men who kill other people. You can make the case that "if you idolize [Homelander / Scarface / Patrick Bateman] then you're missing the point" and you wouldn't even be wrong, but my god are there ever a lot of people who do idolize those guys, and that seems worth interrogating.
And it's not recent American culture either. Think of every famous gangster and bank-robber and Old West outlaw that you've ever heard of. Other countries...really don't do that, at least not to the same extent.
Anyways, all of this by way of saying that, as with so many other things, people like Trump and Hegseth are really just taking what's been implicit for many years and making it explicit.
I'm always saying this (like when I ranted in these tags a few months ago). There's something sick in the very assumptions USAmericans have about life (I say, as a USAmerican myself!) that makes violence and killing seem kind of cool. Most people won't admit it out loud, but it's obvious. You can see it in the Punisher bumper stickers, the gun collections, the fanboy behavior over Tarantino... I could go on. It's wrong and it's rotten and as it intensifies, it bleeds out into distrust of our neighbors, giving a pass to cops who murder people in cold blood during traffic stops, and the never-ending list of school shootings. I genuinely think that at the root of all of this is a sort of worship of physical might and power/domination over others.
This even goes for good people who are generally anti-violence! I would have described myself that way a couple of years back; but last year, totally on accident, I stumbled on a piece of media that made me reevaluate all of my thoughts and feelings about violence and I realized that I too, despite being against violence in general, still saw it as kind of cool, in some weird and twisted way. Like I'd watch action movies and be like "woah, cool move." You know? And I don't think those kinds of feelings are unique to USAmericans, but I would say that USAmericans seem to somehow be bathing in the "violence is cool" kool-aid that other folks are maybe just drinking from time to time. IDK.
It's really hard to pull yourself out of that mindset. I know people aren't just going to change their minds about this overnight. But if I had the power to beam one thing into everyone's brains, including my own, it would be an understanding of how unnecessary, embarrassing, and disgusting violence really is.
The pilot -> astronaut pipeline makes complete sense but is also funny to me. There's a secret second sky and if you get good enough at doing sky you can do space.
