Instead of not seeing each other for 15 years, they try to meet up once a year, because they’re still busy people and they can’t be away for too long. Spending one night together is the only way they could even see each other, and one of them would try to sneak out to avoid waking the other up and to prevent any heartbreak.

That doesn’t always work, unfortunately. They’re far too tuned to each other to not know when they have to leave them.

Until they don’t have to, of course.

Every moment of his life had been in service of something greater. Every shot he took, all the blood he spilled, every single brother he lost, everything in the name of the greater good. Of the right thing.

Was this that right thing it had all been for? After all this time. After everything. This…? He looked in the mirror and saw lines etched in his face that hadn’t been there. His armor was stripped of all color, all the paint was cleaner and more perfect than it has ever been, and yet he couldn’t scrub it, polish it, clean it enough. This wasn’t what he fought for, hurt for, lost brothers for.

… But he could at least make it something else.

All he had to do was take that one step in service to something greater. The doors opened, and for the first time in a long time, he could breathe again…
