🎬 CORNBREAD, EARL AND ME (1975)

There was Cornbread, Earl and Me.

Released in 1975, the film follows Nathaniel "Cornbread" Hamilton, a beloved neighborhood basketball star and the first young man from his community set to attend college on an athletic scholarship. To the neighborhood kids, Cornbread represented hope.

But tragedy strikes when police mistake him for a criminal suspect and fatally shoot him while he is running home in the rain.

The story is then told through the eyes of young Wilford Robinson, played by a 13-year-old Laurence Fishburne in his feature film debut.

What makes the film so powerful is that it wasn't just about basketball. It was about dreams, community, justice, and the courage it takes to tell the truth when everyone wants you to stay silent.

More than five decades later, Cornbread, Earl and Me remains one of the most overlooked films of the 1970s and an early example of socially conscious Black cinema.
