I'm thinking about my favourite dear darling soul and sunshine Alyosha Karamazov again and the fact that sooo many people relied on him to be the angel on their sholder. Like, whenever anyone is in a crisis or just wants someone to confide in they turn to Alyosha (Ivan opening up to him about his beliefs, Grushenyka relying on him after Mitya's arrest, Mitya himself telling Alyosha every single one of his many problems...) and expects him to be 1000% honest. AND HE IS!! And especially in the Mitya-Ivan case where both ask him about their guilt in the patricide (Mitya whether Alyosha believs he did it and Ivan whether he believes he wanted it) and how detrimental the answear is to them both! How it moves a rock from Mitya's heart and how Ivan feels condemned by it. And how from such quiestion Alyosha's almost expected to act as their conscience and moral judge. Like, he's so pure and innocent that he kind of ends up being considered the only one suitable to pass out judgment even if that is very much not what he himself is intending to do. Even Zosima himself sent him out into the world and specifically told him to watch over his family so he plays the role of an guardian angel for everyone and runs around town from one person to another trying to help and yet SO MUCH SHIT HAPPENS DESPITE HIS BEST EFFORTS AND GUESS WHAT? HE DOESN'T GIVE UP!!! Like asjdjaksdsjdasjkjdasjkdas my boy needs a rest so much #AlyoshaDeservesAHug

there’s a small number of holden fans who are incredibly defensive of his actions. he’s shaped by his environment and by everything he’s going through, but that doesn’t make him any less misogynistic. he also has traits that i think overlap with incel ideology. i sometimes see think pieces that respond by pointing out all the good things he’s done or how he treats certain women in his life. but that’s kind of the point: misogynistic men are still people. they can do good things and still hold misogynistic beliefs. holden ascribes innocence and purity to certain women in his life, while other women are dismissed as “whorish” for existing outside of that ideal. he can be a nuanced, sympathetic character with misogynistic traits, and you can still adore him. you don’t have to get defensive about character flaws bc it’s what makes characters interesting and realistic. i know it doesn’t seem like it amongst some tumblr users but you’re allowed to like characters despite their transgressions — they aren’t real people
