First, in ep 11 when they catch up to that corrupt official and question him about the treatment of Liu Hongyi, HLL steps in to make sure ZZ doesn't do anything he'll regret when he does get upset, and later in ep 13 we find out she was sent along because BYT thought it was a risk he'd lose control.

Then, when Ding Yuehua kills Jing Yiming, HLL helps her get away so that ZZ doesn't have to deal with the conflict of whether to arrest her for it, when the law would demand it but he personally doesn't really think she was wrong to kill him.

And of course there is the line they can't cross, and that too is about protecting ZZ, as opposite to himself, they put his life above his principles, even when it has to do with such a deeply personal case to them as their brother and aunt's case (ep 27).

Finally this particular narrative through line gets its climax in the last episode, when ZZ deliberately decides to do what he as an imperial officer should not, namely to kill Prince Xiangyang. It's obviously partly calculated as being for the greater good, because as the prince says, he won't be killed by the emperor, and will just build a new faction, so the only thing to make sure he won't is to kill him, but this is't the full motive, and especially not when it comes to the moment of the act.
