I still canât believe that in the literal first paragraph of A Scandal in Bohemia they make it very clear that Sherlock Holmes doesnât feel anything close to love or anything romantic towards Irene Adler, and adaptations STILL manage to fuck it up.
And I canât believe a big part of the story is that Irene Adler got MARRIED to someone whom she loved and adaptations STILL manage to fuck that up.
Hello, Sherlock Holmes adaptation writer. I have trapped you in this room. It is fully furnished and comfortable. On the table, you will notice a copy of A Scandal in Bohemia by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, of which redistribution is perfectly legal, as the work is in the public domain. You will notice it is rather thin. You have 24 hours to read the approximately 8,550 words in this story. To exit this room, all you must do is summarize the plot of the story without referring to Irene Adler as a seductress or implying she is attracted to Sherlock Holmes. Good luck.
When they make Sherlock Holmes and Irene Norton nĂŠe Adler have sexual tension I get so angry that steam comes out of my ears. First of all that woman has a lovely husband whom she risked her well-being and outsmarted royalty for. Second of all, sheâs like Lana Del Rey to Sherlock Holmes. He keeps a photo of her in the way stan twitter has screenshots of their fav artists. This is not a heterosexual dynamic.
Why was Sherlock so emotional in the last scene with Irene?
A Scandal in Belgravia is a very sad episode as nearly all the characters go through a painful period in their lives. But the one who went through the worst was Sherlock. Not John. Not even Irene. Sherlock.Â
Ever wondered why Sherlock was so emotional when he finally unlocked Ireneâs phone?Â
Because he loved her and felt betrayed?Â
Argument #1: This episode is one of the most Johnlock ones. There are plenty of scenes which openly show the need, jealousy, sexual tension Sherlock and John feel for each other. The scenes that could be interpreted as sexual tension between Sherlock and Irene are much fewer in comparison. As for Sherlock, he never showed clear romantic interest in Irene. But see this for evidence for his feelings for John and see this because I donât believe he was completely indifferent towards Irene either.Â
Argument #2: Did really Irene betray Sherlock? When and in what way? Irene OUTSMARTED Sherlock. She never betrayed him. She never promised him anything. By the end of the episode we found out that she has been really in love with Sherlock. Madly, in fact. No betrayal, then.
And Sherlock knew it all along.Â
Starting from their very first meeting:
When the american agents forced Sherlock to open the safe, Irene tried to help him. She did confirm that Sherlock didnât know the code. But why? Werenât they enemies a couple of minutes ago? Wouldnât it be better for Irene to let her enemies âeatâ each other? Of course, âââobliviousâââ Sherlock noticed.
And Irene realized her mistake. (Well, mistake in a cold-blooded viewpoint.)
Then Irene started texting Sherlock. The first thing she texted him was âTill the next time, Mr Holmes.â And Sherlock âs face was priceless:

Why Sherlock isnât really sexually oblivious
Sherlock is considered by the vast majority of fans as a sexually oblivious person. But is he, really? I always believed quite the opposite, so Iâll try to explain my viewpoint. Letâs remember the dinner scene in A Study in Pink:
John: People donât have arch-enemies.
Sherlock: Iâm sorry?
J:Â In real life. There are no arch-enemies in real life. Doesnât happen.
S: Doesnât it? Sounds a bit dull.
J: So who did I meet?
S: What do real people have, then, in their ââreal livesââ?Â
J: Friends? People they know, people they like, people they donât like. Girlfriends, boyfriends âŚ
S:Â Yes, well, as I was saying â dull.
J: You donât have a girlfriend then.
S: Girlfriend? No, not really my area.Â
(Source: timelordemort)
John doesnât seem to pay much attention at first, but then he starts thinking that the phrase ânot really my areaâ may have a very specific meaning.
J:Â Oh, right. Do you have a boyfriend?
(Source: pondmelody)
Sherlock turns to look sharply at John.Â
J: (thinks Sherlock believes heâs judging him) âŚWhich is fine by the way.
S: I know itâs fine.
J: (smiles reassuringly) So you have a boyfriend
S: No. (âWhy do you insist on asking?â)
Sherlock keeps looking at him sharply.
J: Right, okay! (âRelax, why do you stiffen up?â)
John licks his lips. Sherlock narrows his eyes.
J:Â Youâre unattached. Like me. Fine. Good.
For John, this conversation has come to an end. After one last suspicious glare, Sherlock looks away. However, obviously his mind isnât on the murderer. He takes a breath and turns to John again.Â
S: John, um⌠I think you should know that I consider myself married to my work, and while Iâm flattered by your interest, Iâm really not looking for anyâŚ
J: (only now he understands why Sherlock was looking at him oddly) NoâŚno.. (he nearly chokes) Iâm not asking⌠no⌠Iâm just saying, itâs all fine.
S: (unconvinced) Good. Thank you.
J: (âWhat the hell did just happen?â)

This is the definition of a honest WTF moment.
Now, the most popular opinion is that John made an effort to hit on Sherlock and after Sherlock rejected him he decided to never bring it up again and became extremely heteronormative as an act of self-assurance.Â
In my opinion, this is not what happens here. John doesnât try to hit on Sherlock. He just chats in a friendly manner, trying to learn more about his mysterious new flatmate. However, when Sherlock responds that âa girlfriend is not his areaâ, itâs absolutely normal and expected that John thinks Sherlock is probably homosexual, taking into consideration everything heâs heard that day. Mrs Hudson, Donovan and Mycroft have already implied that these two might be a couple, but none of them knows anything about Johnâs personal life - they do know about Sherlockâs life though, donât they? If all of Sherlockâs acquaintances supposed so quickly that Sherlock and John are a couple, then Sherlock must be gay. Itâs the perfectly logical conclusion and Sherock actually underpins it with his reactions. Then John tries to reassure Sherlock that he is open-minded (after all his own sister is a lesbian). Sherlock misunderstands Johnâs intentions (or perhaps not?).
Everyone analyzes Johnâs not gay - gay flirting, but in fact there isnât much in Johnâs actions. The curious case here is Sherlock.
Sherlock stops responding casually when John asks him if he has a boyfriend. His reaction, though, is very interesting. Letâs see it again.
What does he look like? Well, most definitely surprised. But is he unpleasantly surprised or irritated like John thinks? According to the following gifâŚ
(Source: sherlockbbcgifs)
NO
Itâs not really the words, itâs the look. Sherlock becomes passive, stops being talkative and looks at John - uhm whatâs the word? Angrily? No. Defensively? Hmm not sure⌠Examiningly? Yeah, probably⌠Intensely? CloserâŚ
EXPECTANTLY
Yep, thatâs the word. Sherlock is surprised at first, because he didnât deduce John is gay (and he was right because John isnât). But then he looks as if he expects from John to reveal his true intentions, which is something that John doesnât do because he has no such intentions (keep reading, Iâm a Johnlocker).Â
But John makes two mistakes:
He licks his lips.
He says that he is single as well.
These two things convince Sherlock that John tries to flirt with him. While the first needs some further examination, the second isnât flirting. Itâs just a simple declaration. Poor John tries desperately to make Sherlock comfortable and makes it even worse by telling him that they are in the same situation. After some thought, Sherlock then decides to speak openly and reject him. John denies that he had any romantic / sexual intentions and then an unconvinced SherlockâŚ
âŚlooks away relieved? No. Maybe calmer but definitely not relieved.Â
Now, remember, Sherlock never again acted like that in other flirts. People consider Sherlock sexually oblivious, but whatever he is, thatâs not oblivious. He predicted Jim would hit on him, before the latter even closed the door of the laboratory.
#Ohhh shit heâs gay  #he came for me  #john is right behind me  #I must ignore this guy completely
Sherlock is completely rude towards Jim (sometimes even Jim needs some understanding okay?) and this is not because Jim is a human being and Sherlock despises human beings. I stand by the opinion that Sherlock may be somewhat socially awkward, but heâs not hostile to people he just met for no reason! So, Sherlock behaves so terribly in front of Jim, because he realizes that Jim is attracted to him and plays with Mollyâs heart. And most importantly, John is in the room, so Sherlock must look as disinterested as possible.
Also, he immediately understood Kitty Rileyâs sexual approach was fake. He is the only one who suspects Irene Adler is in love with him from the very beginning, you can read this analysis (âWhy was Sherlock so emotional in the last scene with Irene?â) for more on this topic. Â And look at his face when Molly refreshes her lipstick:
People laugh at how oblivious he is and how he doesnât understand that Molly just asked him out. And Iâm looking at him and I only see suspicion. Itâs as if he thinks âShit, sheâs about to hit on me. How do I escape from that?â Seriously, thatâs his face when Molly simply says she refreshed her lipstick:
Then, when Molly asks if heâd like to have coffee, Sherlock takes advantage of her poorly expressed question and quickly rushes out of the room before she has a chance to tell him bringing him coffee was not what she meant.Â
In TBB Sherlock intentionally compliments Mollyâs looks to make her allow him to see the corpses. Sherlock is aware of his sexual attractiveness and uses it to his advantage more than once.Â
So Sherlock is not oblivious as we usually think. Itâs not that he canât recognise a sexual approach - he can, but he usually chooses to ignore it.Â
But thatâs not what he does with John. In fact, he does exactly the opposite. If he meant he was asexual, he would say that a boyfriend isnât his area either and everything would end there. But he didnât say that. He clearly waited passively for John to make a move and when John didnât, he rejected him in advance, because thatâs what he does, thatâs how he feels safe.
So, Sherlock didnât reject John because he wasnât interested in him. He rejected him because he believes thatâs what he must do in order to protect himself from âdestructive loveâ. He doesnât want to fall for John, but he falls anyway. In other words, if John actually did hit on him that day and his flirting was daring, Sherlock would probably not have the discipline to resist.Â
So what I mean here is that Sherlock is gay and interested in John, but John is clearly disinterested in him? Nope!
There is this excellent argument that when the most observant man in the world thinks youâre flirting with him, then you probably are. Fair enough.Â
But I said that Johnâs words didnât really hide some romantic interest.Â
Once again, itâs not the words but the unconscious reactions - the lip licking, the reassuring smile, the effort to make Sherlock feel more comfortable and explain, when clearly Sherlock isnât very keen to speak about these issues. The really hard effort to play cool. Just to name a few. John thinks he just chats, but his subconscious betrays him in front of Sherlock. John hasnât realized heâs interested in Sherlock yet. Some claim that John is a bisexual who, after being rejected, started being extremely heteronormative, but this is not the case.
When they left the restaurant to chase the taxi, John didnât care being rejected by Sherlock, because he didnât realize he had such feelings for him yet. Therefore he doesnât act in a heteronormative way in the rest of the episode. In the next scenes John is more delighted than ever and he literally gives no fuck about what Sherlock just said. Remember what followed:
This.
Thatâs something not-gay-John-Watson wouldnât do as easily in The Reichenbach Fall. He still doesnât think about it when he touches Sherlock. HoweverâŚnotice the way Sherlock already looks at him.Â
And then this mutual mastur⌠errrr⌠enthusiasm.
And then this, whatever you want to call it.
(Source: onetrueharem)
This actually happened in front of a dozen of people. And we know that John has an issue with what people think. But we donât see him acting heteronormatively here. He doesnât care, because he doesnât realize that what he does isnât quite expected of two straight guys who just met. (And this is probably the last time he doesnât realize it.)
Ironically, Sherlock knows what John feels for him before John himself, because he deduces what he feels by observing his reactions, movements and decisions just like he does with all other people! So there you go, John Watson is the oblivious one of the two. In his forty(?) years of living, John Watson has never experienced something that strong and undeniable, so it âll take him a while to understand what is really going on here. Sherlock never was sexually oblivious and will never be. On the contrary, heâs quite quick on these matters, especially when it comes to men. John will start realizing that something doesnât feel quite right probably at the end of the episode. When he kills for this goddamn guy without a second thought. Donât worry, John Watson wonât be oblivious for long. Heteronormativity says hello in the Blind Banker. Â
I want to live in these beautiful places ...
Broooooooo i love their dynamics
Gwen's questions is like if Sherlock is a house plant, minus the drug thing loll
This is probably my favourite rendition of Lestrade-Holmes dynamics. They're friends (wonder if Sherlock thinks so too?)!
Even tho Dame Gwen Lestrade is less competent, in a way, than the Sherlock Holmes. It's nice. And Lestrade is a woman! Also Really Nice!

Life is very long, when youâre lonely - (2023)
I gathered in this post all the BBC Sherlock speed paintings / artworks I did between December 2022 and March 2023. I did them at first to practice lights and textures but I ended up with a series centered around loneliness, grief andâŚmeans of transportations.
