The House subreddit is so funny
You'll have people in the comments saying "House and Wilson aren't gay. There's a whole episode about it."
Meanwhile here's some facts about the episode in question...
It's called "The Down Low".
A phrase that refers to 'men who have sex with other men but consider themselves to be straight'.
In this episode House and Wilson pretend to be in a relationship to keep the other person from being with a woman.
At the climax of the episode Wilson professes his love and proposes to House in a crowded restaurant, successfully winning their game of chicken. They toast and presumably, after they finish the wine, they go home together.
The episode ends with them at home, in the condo they share, playfully bickering about how to decorate their new home.
A couple other things that feel more nebulous but still give me a 'they're not straight and the writers know it' vibe:
The general "they were roommates" of it all. Historically, we all know that this has been used to refer to a closeted queer couple. As House says, "We're grown men over the age of 30 who moved in together. We're two tigers away from an act in Vegas." The fact that they're perceived as queer because they live together is kind of the plot of the episode though so I feel conflicted using it as evidence to the contrary.
The case features two characters who broadly echo House and Wilson (in age, demeanor, and apparent moral fiber) and who seem to me to be gay. (Eddie almost never leaves Mickey's side and risks his life for the chance to save him. In turn, Mickey seems to be conflicted about giving up Eddie to the extent that he needed to take beta blockers to handle the stress of his double life. Furthermore, House thinks that Chase would be more persuasive than Thirteen when talking to Mickey. And there's the very uncomfortable way Eddie says "the nurses out here can't keep their hands off of me".)
And of course this interaction at the beginning of the episode between House and Thirteen (the only openly queer character on the show) which feels to me like an acknowledgment that House is bisexual (not the only time the show uses Thirteen as an subtle indication of House's bisexuality but that's TED talk for another day).
House: Yes, he won't tell us anything. Understandable, since he's a drug dealer.
Thirteen: So he's dangerous and withholding, which you find irresistible. But guys like that, they never call.
Which elicits this face and, for once, no snappy comeback:
Listen, I'm not here to prove anybody wrong and of course men can be friends and live together without being in a relationship or queer. But this is a television show written with intent at a time when men couldn't be openly queer on primetime TV. The writers did not have to write Wilson buying a condo for them to live in together in the last episode, they did not have to treat it like a home that they were going to share for an indeterminate amount of time, and they did not need to have them play gay chicken under the guise of 'getting the girl' where the only person they end up going home with is each other. Arguing that this episode is meant to show how House and Wilson were both perfectly straight, rather than a way to clue the audience in that their relationship is anything but, feels like a misinterpretation of the source material. In my opinion.
And this is just one episode. Don't even get me started on the organ.
