Okay so I just got off the phone with them. I talked to a trans girl named Aurora & she was super helpful! She gave me a few doctors to talk to & encouraged me to seek therapy instead of just rushing to get my pills. She literally found a trans friendly therapist in my town & I would definitely recommend giving them a call!

This, a thousand times this. This has been my headcanon from pretty much day one, but you worded it so beautifully and put everything so well together, im amazed. The only thing that differs from my personal headcanon is that I put Mercy as another bad guy. I mean, she is already established to have performed grossly unethical medical experimentation on victims who couldn’t and didn’t give consent to it, and inflicting serious psychological and physiological trauma upon them. I think she works for Talon/the UN as a mole. She’s in the core group, everyone likes her, everyone talks to her and from her information they can make sure that Jack and Gabriel are driven apart even further. Everytime it looks like they might reconcile, boom, something happens, some information is lost, some “facts” come to light and they go back to hating each other. Mercy is close enough to them to supervise all that. And who was it who told the public that Gabriel was jealous of Jack’s promotion and that things were likely to come to a head between them? Oh right, that was also Mercy. But yes, all in all I seriously love this headcanon and how well you wrote it. Big kudos to you.

@puckish-saint ……holy shit dude. I never realized. Holy shit. Holy shit. That….that’s been it, the one flaw in my head Canon. Why was their so much discourse between the two. Why would Gabe be bitter if he got an equal more powerful organization. Any soldier in their right mind knows that the politics of becoming commander are screwed up. It didn’t make sense that Gabe would want the position covered in red tape when his whole premise was “shoot first and ask questions later”. It was backwards. I was going off the assumption that I should believe everything Mercy has said. Why shouldn’t I? What cause did I have to doubt her? I mean, sure, Reaper hates her, but Reaper hates everyone. Genji was grateful to her, he has voice lines to prove it. But what if…what if that’s because of the social standing of Mercy. There’s a term for it. When you believe someone is a good person because everyone else does. I forget. Fuck. I was BUT A FOOL.

I take all of it. @just-overwatch-shit the implications around why genji likes her I’ve never even considered. I just ignored that bit of canon, but your explanation makes so much sense. Reaper has never spent much time around Mercy after his resurrection, but Genji has practically lived with her and the people who love her for years. And when you’re told at every corner how this woman saved you life (it doesn’t feel like a life worth living) and how she did everything in her power to save you (but what if there was another way) out of pure altruistic motives (then why has she published so many papers on the things she discovered experimenting on me) then at some point you believe it.  No one ever says anything against Mercy. Everyone loves this sweet, caring girl and Genji, well he knows he’s bitter so it’s not a far stretch to assume that his dislike for her is not actualy “real” it’s just born out of his misguided hate for his own body. And then Zenyatta teaches him to love himself and that’s a good thing but he automatically translates that to meaning that he also has to be grateful to Mercy. And yeah … suddenly you have the victim of horrible mistreatment at the hands of a so-called medical professional who sincerely believes he should be grateful for it. And @natalya-romanova Your bit about how the UN works is so helpful, thank you <3 <3 <3 I understand next to nothing about what the UN actually is or wants, except they have a lot of influence and some very vague goals, so this really helped flesh things out. This also opens the path to Blackwatch not doing only evil shit. I mean, it was 90% there to keep the people in power where they are and everytime it looks like the UN’s influence might be undermined, whoops there is a mysterious accident or theft or whatever and the UN is firmly on top again. But if you’re already crossing lines everywhere, you might as well take care of that ugly human rights issue over in X or make sure that through a hacked computer or two an election doesn’t put a fascist shithead on top of a country. So it’s not exactly moral, but it’s not evil either. And that would be the part that makes Gabriel think that maybe in the end it’s all worth it. Jack may not give a crap about his people (he would care, but he was never told. But Gabe doesn’t know that) but they’re doing good work. He may be the UN’s puppet, the one who makes sure the rich important people with the oak desks get to keep them, but he prevented more wars than have ever been fought, and that has to count for something.  Even if he’s losing all his friends because they think he’s slowly going evil or mad, even if all he ever wanted was to craft his own fate and is now being controlled by bureaucrats, even if he loses more people each day being sent on increasingly more dangerous and immoral missions, it has to be worth it.

HHHHHHHHHH. Yes, I’m a hundred percent on board with all of this. I might add, that I also headcanon that the reason they have Widowmaker in the Overwatch story is just to show that Talon can brainwash people into something completely different from them. She is a plot device explaining Gabriel’s current position. Furthermore, there has always been a very obvious juxtaposition of Mercy (Angelic, pure, fair) and Reaper (Demonic, flawed, dark) that I personally really like and fits nice and neatly into all this. They are the only characters in the lineup that have a classic good/evil design, and something about that has always nagged at me. Dr Ziegler losing her parents to war may also serve as a farther reason for her to support a totalitarian ideology (if there are no wars, brought on by force or not, things are cool). This is sorta hinted at with Genji’s transformation (the end justifies the means). Yeah sure, you might be warping a person beyond what they want or can mentally handle, but in the end OVerwatch has a valuable soldier to keep the peace.
