the thing that sours a lot of ttpd for me is just that it’s so BRAZEN in its obsession with breaking records and charting. like she was really like “buy 4 vinyls to hear all the songs JK i’m actually releasing 30 songs total and they’re all technically on the same album so the streaming numbers will all be attributed to this one album and then i can Win At The Music Industry” like — what if you just trusted in the quality of your music instead of all these gimmicks in order to keep yourself on the charts? what if you made songs so unequivocally good that you could break records with only 13 absolutely stellar tracks like you did with 1989? honestly it makes me feel like she herself feels insecure about the record’s quality — like she KNOWS the album can’t do these sorts of numbers on just the music being good so she’s resorted to using all these tactics to make sure it breaks records instead of letting the music speak for itself. and makes it hard to really get behind it when it seems like even taylor herself doesn’t believe it’s that good
