I don’t blame any Muslim for being triggered by it because when I see my own Magen David necklace I think about that stuff too, even if I don’t want to. I am a convert so I don’t have a lifetime of positive association. The brain makes these connections whether or not it’s got some blue stripes and we’ve got a whole generation coming up that has those negative associations.

I’m not saying I think it’s the same thing as a swastika or that you’re bad for wearing your necklace. I’m wearing mine now. I just think it’s time to start letting it be an inward-facing symbol rather than the default outward facing symbol.

Not every Rabbi is good at or even interested in sponsoring converts but they sometimes do it anyway. Sometimes the better information really does come from your own study.

Not everyone trusts their rabbi. If you spend enough time in convert spaces you get a perspective on Jewish institutions that a lot of born Jews are lacking. Rabbis are humans with the capacity to be bad and when you’re being mistreated as a convert-in-progress it’s very isolating and discouraging to have people saying “ask your Rabbi” constantly with no further assistance because those are the kinds of people that tend to not be receptive to hearing “actually my Rabbi is kind of a knob and I don’t feel comfortable discussing that with them”

You may see a convert-in-progress as a gentile in need of assistance but you do not know where they’re at in the process or how they self-identify. Many Jews both born and convert do not feel that “Jewish” and “Gentile” are binary and mutually exclusive states and many converts (including myself) do not consider the start of the formal institutional process as the beginning of their conversion.

Respectfully, if you are not on someone’s Beit Din then their observance is 0% your business. Converts in progress are not necessarily practicing observance for the day they get to do the real thing - they may be really doing it. No one but them can know what’s going on inside them. Ask yourself if you’d be receptive to any unsolicited advice you’re about to give before you give it.
