Went to Galveston this weekend from the 6th to the 9th. Bionicle turns 25 this year. It'll be Bionicle day in a few days. Perfect opportunity to bring some of my figures along to take pictures for the occasion and also take them where they feel more at home.
August 9th was the last day in Galveston, and even then we had to leave by 10 in the morning. So I got up earlier than everyone else just to spend some last minute time on the beach to take a photos of the Toa Mata, and a portrait of the whole family. I wish I got to have a day or two more at Galveston so I could've taken more pictures. But... I'm glad I got to take all the essential photos, and take any pictures at all. I really wanted to make this Bionicle Day, the 25th anniversary no, less truly special.
I hope I did, especially to these biomechanical, Mask wearing, elemental fairy creatures who changed my life for the better, helped keep my head up high through my toxic helicopter parents...the biomechanical mask wearing, elemental heroes I miss so much.
Tahu... Gali... Pohatu... Lewa... Kopaka... Onua... Vakama... Matau... Nokama... Onewa... Nuju... Whenua... Takua... Jaller... Hahli... Macku... Hewkii... and everybody else... thank you for everything.
Day 4 at Galveston. The Toa Mata and, later, the Turaga, and Matoran on the beach of Mata Nui.

Orion Pax and D-16 Are Dead and Gone and Nobody Even Cares
Nobody who created the film cares that D-16 is gone... they just want to replace him with Elita, Bee, and the Autobots.
They don't want people to feel the true weight of D-16's loss. They want to fool themselves and everybody else.
They just want Elita and Bee to replace the place that Dee had in Optimus' heart and separate them further to return to the sort of status quo of Transformers to attract old audiences...
Even Bryan Tyree Henry said he wants to see Megatron's descent into the dark side. He doesn't want a world where D-16 can stay as D-16. None of the people who worked on the film do… not really.
I bet Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Kegan Michael Key, Lawrence Fishburne, Evan Michael Lee, and everybody else have long since disowned D-16 and don't see him as family anymore, don't want him back. Everyone has.
But... here's the thing... I don't think the TF1 version of the Transformers stories can go back to the status quo even if it wanted to. At least not to the entire extent.
As a non-Transformers fan, I don't think most people, fans, and non-fans alike, realize just how much Optimus has lost, just how much Elita, Bee, and the cogless bots have lost after Megatron and the high-guard turned to the dark side.
The Cybertronian folk have done this countless times before for 40 years. Even with Transformers One, where Optimus and Megatron start off as friends, and them, Elita, and Bee as a chaotic, dysfunctional little family, with it all being a tragedy... people have seemed to take for granted this fleeting moment of beauty. Some people don't even think D-16 was good to begin with, was always bad, and that Optimus, Elita, and Bee are better off without him... It's almost like they want an eternal war to happen.
But... as a non-Transformers fan... as an outsider to all this... this isn't something someone should want.
TF fans, however jokingly, or genuinely, call it a story of how two shapeshifting robot husbands went through such a painful and messy divorce that they made it everyone else's problem, except here, it's actually true! And I think that premise, that idea, is... far more disturbing than people give credit for.
When I came into this film, I knew Megatron was gonna turn to the dark side since he's the villain of the franchise. I once accepted it. Now... now I can't... I knew Optimus and Megatron were going to become enemies. Now I desperately wish for them to be friends again. I knew Megatron was going to leave them, that it would just be Optimus, Elita, and Bee by the end... but any time I see such, it just feels... incomplete. Like a broken family. And I miss all four of them together so badly. I want to see them get back together so much, or at least miss each other.
It's like I just want to go home... but I don't have a home to go back to.
If a sequel ever does come... It'll be so hard to adjust without Megatron being there with Optimus, Elita, and Bee. I know that for the others, fans and even non-fans it'll be easy... they're used to it. For them, it's the same as it ever was. But for me, and for I think to that extent, the Autobots... it'll never be the same. Things are never going to be the way that they should be.
The fans are too used to the endless cycle of death and despair... uncomfortably comfortable.
Everyone is used to Optimus Prime and Megatron becoming enemies, the Autobots and Decepticons fighting... The reason behind them fighting may change, Optimus and Megatron's relationship before them becoming enemies and even meeting may change... and sometimes the war is necessary, or at least worthwhile. Like the Michael Bay stories, where the Decepticons caused the most heinous war crimes against the earth folk, leading Optimus and the Autbobots having to fight, not with honor or mercy, but having to fight hard and dirty, even kill. But in Transformers One, this time... this time is not like those stories.
Megatron is a good person who does bad things... He wanted to bring justice his fellow cogless bots and right the wrongs done on Cybertron. Both he and Optimus Prime equally wanted it, except one of them was actually qualified for it. He's not evil, he's mentally ill, and he never got the help that he needed. Just like the Autobots, the Decepticons also wanted to do good and save their world, but have clearly lost their way and never got the help or guidance they truly needed. They're going to fight an eternal war... and all for what?
There's also the fact that in the Michael Bay films, as well as other stories like the Transformers Prime stories, Optimus and Megatron started out as friends, making this war personal. But here, not only is it truly shown and not just told... Not only was Optimus friends with Megatron... Elita was friends with him, Bee was friends with him... the cogless bots were friends with him. If this war is really going to happen... then not only will this war be personal for Optimus... it'll be personal for Elita... for Bee... and even the Autobots to a certain extent.
I mean, really stop and think about it. Optimus Prime and Megatron, two best friends who love each other very much, have become enemies because they don't understand each other and can't communicate for shit. The mining bots have just lost one of their brothers-in-arms and they have a knew enemy who could strike at any time... one of their other brothers-in-arms, their new leader, is a husk of who he once was... and there's Quintessons about. That alone is bad enough. But imagine, they're grieving, however much time has passed, and not only their lost brother is back, but it's gotten to the point where it's a full on war... and they realize that things are never going to be the way that they should be...
I understand completely why Primus gave Optimus the Matrix, why he became a Prime, and I'm glad that at least he's still good... but... when you look at Megatron and why he turned to the dark side, and the Decepticons and how they never got the help they really needed, and the situation in its entirety... Optimus becoming a Prime isn't something someone should want. At least not like this. And the same goes for Megatron becoming evil. And them becoming enemies and making it everybody else's problem.
All that war... all that death... all that despair... won't fix anything!
There is, indeed, a world where D-16 could've stayed as D-16... or at least a world where Megatron can turn back into D-16. But only if the fans and the creators of TF1 really truly want it. I don't know if we'll ever get a trilogy or even a sequel for the Transformers One stories... but people should really take the time to really think about what it is they actually want if such does come to be.
If they really want Optimus Prime to be human which means being pushed past the breaking point, losing his kindness and hopefulness for a good reason, having undesirable human traits, and actually showing human emotions, or if they really want him to be a paragon, beyond all forms of corruption, being kind and hopeful even when it conflicts with reality, having only desirable human traits, and smiling through the pain.
If they really want Megatron to get better, atone for his sins and become good again, or to get worse, and descend into the dark side to the point where he becomes irredeemable.
If they really want a world where D-16 can stay as D-16, where Optimus and Megatron become friends again and truly unify Cybertron together, and break the cycle for good (or at least in the TF1 stories), or to return to the same old scenario of the divorced robot husbands fighting an eternal war, the idea of a unified Cybertron a myth, forever damned to repeat the same cycle of war, death, and despair in every new installment of Transformers for all of eternity.
If the Transformers fans and the creators really truly want a world where D-16 can stay as D-16, or at least just a darker, more nuanced and complex version of Optimus Prime and Megatron, of the Autobots and Decepticons, and of an eternal war in any possible Transformers One stories yet to come... well... they may have to abandon the idea of the status quo, or at least certain parts of it...
Because... in this version of the story...
...they're all going to burn! They're all going to die!!! THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING!!!!!!
There Is A World Where D-16 Could've Stayed As D-16
There is a world where D-16 could've stayed as D-16... and I know where that world is.
But it's not going to be found on Cybertron... it's not on Earth... it's not even in this universe.
It's far, far away... beyond our stars... in a time before time...

A WIP of the scarecrow girls and their parents.
Did you know Vakama may have been a Mask Maker for less than 2 years?
Yeah, according to his Bionicle Encyclopedia entry, Vakama was asked to make the Mask of Time by the false Turaga Dume (Makuta Teridax in disguise) "shortly after being promoted to Mask Maker". Makuta was only impersonating Dume for 18 months, implying that Vakama's whole career as a Mask Maker may have only been a couple years AT MOST.
Which is fucking hilarious because of how he made being a Mask Maker his whole identity! Oh yes, this job I've been doing for a year-and-a-half, its all I am, and all I ever will be.
And also, he was claimed to be the greatest Mask Maker in Ta-Metru, and everyone believed it! Teridax went to this guy fresh out of graduation to make a reality warping Legendary Kanohi! A feat that Teridax himself tried and failed to do! Vakama was so good at his job, that Teridax, a man with a god complex so massive he LITERALLY prays to himself, decided "you know what, I think you'd do a better job than me".
Also Nurhii is officially the most valid of the Great Disk Matoran, imagine being the best at one of the most prestigious jobs in your entire civilization for potentially thousands of years, only for your apprentice to show you up only a few months after graduating. I'd crash out too!
I had already headcanoned that Vakama was the youngest Toa Metru, and possibly very young by Matoran standards, but this takes it to a whole other level! Sure, he may have spent a while as a tool maker before being promoted, but it is still solid evidence that he might actually be a baby. Imagine being the young prodigy in town, you get turned into a superhero for a few weeks, and now all of a sudden you have to be the "wise old man" because everyone you looked up to got their memories wiped.
Fucking crazy the massive implications of this one of line Greg probably wasn't even thinking too hard about. And it isn't even a forum statement, this was from the Encyclopedia, a published piece of story material!
Also in line with headcanons from @crystaltoa @bionicle-ramblings @legend-as-old-as-time, as well as some from myself that Vakama is a very young old man
The Single Most Important Line In Transformers One
"What defines a Transformer is not the cog in his chest, but the spark that resides in their core, a spark that gives them the will to make their world better"
.........why does this feel so familiar?
S.O.S
(flash warning)
I think... I might have failed Optimus Prime, and Megatron, and Elita-1, and B-127... and the cogless bots... and the high guard... and the souls of the late Primes... and the people of Cybertron as a whole...
Because of this…
I watched it to maybe get a few laughs and to feel inspired by my favorite quote of the movie... but then...
When it got to the part with Apha Trion… and especially the part with Optimus Prime and the mining bots…
That line…
"What defines a Transformer is not the cog in his chest, but the spark that resides their core, a spark that gives them the will to make their world better."
That line…the most important theme and message in the entire film that could ever be told... a line so inspiring, and so comforting… And yet here… I could feel that hatred, that anger, that disgust, that fear, that sadness, that hopelessness and despair towards the film's ending... returning, and I tried desperately to fight it off… to feel happiness and hope that that quote always gave me…
...this can't be happening... this can't be real... no...
What if... my love of Transformers One has already died..... and has been dead for a while? Or what if my love of the film was never even real?
Don't say that... that can't be true... it just can't. They did genuinely love each other for they were as people, not the idea of each other. They loved each other... but they didn't understand each other. They didn't understand each other... but they loved each other.
I mean, D-16 was rightfully fed up with Orion's behavior like everyone else. He could've left him. He could've found a new best friend. But... he didn't. I think D saw something in Orion that nobody else could. He loved him... he really loved him. Elita understood Orion, but she still hated him. She grew to love him, but that love had to be earned.
And what about Megatron crying at the end? Or Optimus' flashback to when they first met? If that doesn't mean they loved each other for who they were, then I don't know what does.
Orion Pax and D-16 did love each other for who they were as people and not the idea of each other... But the tragedy is that love wasn't enough.
Transformers One is a story about love and when love just isn't good enough.

Optimus, Elita, and Bee are not a family.
If you really think Optimus, Elita, and Bee are going to be a perfect, happy little family, WELL THEY ARE NOT!!! They're an incomplete family, a broken family!!! Because there's four members of their family, and one of them is lost! They're not going to move on from that, and be perfect, happy, or healthy, like he never existed. They're going to mourn him, miss him, be lost without him, it won't be the same without him. They're not going to be grateful-thankful with a limb clearly missing. They're going to want him back. They're incomplete without him.
The only reason people think are going to be a perfect, happy little family is because of the ending and its forced hope and optimism... and, perhaps, people's bais towards Megatron and the fact that they're so used to Optimus and Megatron being enemies, and the Autobots and Decepticons fighting.
But it feels like everyone's moved on and forgotten about Megatron/D-16, and that he was family too, and that they're actually a broken family. Foolishly believing they're a going to be a perfect, happy little family when they're the exact opposite.
It's not that I don't want them to be I happy, I do, I want all of them to be happy. But not like this. I don't want them to be happy. I want them to be real, to be genuine, to fall apart like anyone real in this situation would, to sit with their pain, and let out all their sadness, anger, and despair, validate the horror and hopelessness of their situation, to sit with their pain, and receive comfort.
Because Optimus, Elita, and Bee, without Megatron, are alone, and alone they are not complete, left for defeat, in need of a place to turn to. And to that extent, the Autobots and Decepticons are alone; alone they are not complete, left for defeat, in need of a place to turn to.
Optimus did not lose a best friend but gain two new friends. He lost his best and friend and they're the only two friends he has left.
Megatron didn't lose just one friend. He lost all three.
"There's something unexplainable in these beautiful but somber seconds of Optimus Prime sadly watching Megatron drive off into the distance. Losing a best friend like this is so hard, but the way he gazes at him regretfully, like he just wants his friend back just hurts so much.
For the first time, whilst Optimus went through that flashback, he was truly alone without his friend by his side (before Elita or B returned to the scene). Such a powerful scenario, knowing those whom you've trusted for so long may not be the person you always thought they'd turn out to be..."
He is still truly alone, even with Elita and Bee.
It's not that he thinks the one he trusted most may not have turned out to be who he thought he was, but… that he doesn't understand WHY Megatron left him to die, why he tried burning down Iacon. And Megatron doesn't understand why Optimus took the bullet for Sentinal.
