A.I. Popov, leader of the revolutionary movement in Siberia, in a letter to his mother before his execution by the tsarist regime in the wake of the failed 1905 revolution. the tsarist regime executed 15,000 workers, exiled 45,000, and imprisoned 75,000 by April 1906. the proto-fascist gang the Black Hundreds were used by the government to crush workers’ organisations and carry out antisemitic pogroms across the Russian Empire. instead of backing down, the year 1906 saw more than one million workers involved in strike action. the forces of counter revolution were brutal but 12 years later the hard-learned lessons of revolution, paid for by the blood of thousands, led to the workers taking power for the first time in history in what would become the USSR.
