Have you ever met someone on the internet that you liked so much that you sometimes sit there and think “Oh man there are people who are lucky enough to see this person IN THE FLESH ON A REGULAR BASIS and I wonder if they realize how LUCKY they are”
One of my favourite bits of media history trivia is that back in the Elizabethan period, people used to publish unauthorised copies of plays by sending someone who was good with shorthand to discretely write down all of the play's dialogue while they watched it, then reconstructing the play by combining those notes with audience interviews to recover the stage directions; in some cases, these unauthorised copies are the only record of a given play that survives to the present day. It's one of my favourites for two reasons:
It demonstrates that piracy has always lay at the heart of media preservation; and
Imagine being the 1603 equivalent of the guy with the cell phone camera in the movie theatre, furtively scribbling down notes in a little book and hoping Shakespeare himself doesn't catch you.
It's important, especially for beginner writers, but to remind those who have been writing long term as well, that your writing, your stories, your characters and plots, they cannot be all encompassing, they simply cannot address every issue we individually and collectively face in the world today. They cannot completely and flawlessly represent every single person's lived experience in absolute depth and nuance, and that's normal, that's okay! What's important is for you to lean into the story you want to tell and the experiences and passions (themes, opinions, hobbies even) you want to share and explore, and make every effort to tell those things to the best of your ability — and tell a bloody good tale while you're at it 💕

This is very, very difficult, but currently I've been thinking a lot of that one scene in For the Future where Luz realizes she just wants to be understood 👀
Absolutely nothing more dystopian to me than the fact that the Met Gala took place on the very same day that Israel rejected a ceasefire deal, launched (and is still launching) ongoing attacks against eastern Rafah, issued a warning for Palestinians to leave literally after they started heavily bombing Rafah already, and closed the crossing between Rafah and Egypt.
This has sealed Gaza’s last exit from the outside world. Everyone in Gaza is now officially trapped.
Also tired of people using the “we just want to be distracted during these hard times!!!” excuse bc you’re not the ones whose lives are being uprooted, you’re not the ones who lost families, you’re not the ones who’re living in famine. You’re fine. If a disgustingly exorbitant event didn’t take place this year so as not to overshadow and undermine an ongoing genocide, you’d be fine. And you’d think this is common sense but people need to be told this every time an event like this comes up. The fact that people think not supporting a rich people event during these times equates to “pausing your life” really shows how little empathy some of you have for other people (re: Arab people). Like keep it to yourself

Okay, I think this post is kind of heavy so skip over it if ya want.
But um, this one scene from She-Ra's finale is kind of stuck with me...
I can relate to Adora so much because she thought that her wants weren't important. I've always felt like I can't get the things that I truly want in life and that I'll never be happy, to the point of thinking that it no longer matters. To the point of just, not finding worth in my own life... Except when there's something I can give to someone else.
Sometimes a part of me hopes to get something in return, and when I do it's really wonderful (a bit baffling even). But when I don't, I'm not surprised or upset... Nobody's required to give anything back, and not everyone has the chance/energy to right away... But it still hurts, because it makes me feel like a resource with no needs or wants. And it hurts more than I can say whenever I feel like I have nothing left to give and that I'm just no longer useful, because what am I still worth then?
But then, this scene just comes out of nowhere asserting the opposite. Mara's words to Adora aren't even that long, but they still feel so powerful. It's something that Adora couldn't say for herself, so Mara said it for her, reminding her that she's a person too.
I can't help but have a similar reaction, because it's just so comforting and affirming. Also the part about not giving up- ASDHSGAHSKJHSM GAH AND THE OST 😭😭😭😭
I could actually ramble more about this scene but alr I'ma stop now.
I was talking 'bout She-Ra's ending (2018) with a friend and wrote some stuff about Shadow Weaver (spoilers). Anyways, I just wanna share 😌✨️
AHEM (this is the tumblr edition),
I feel like her sacrifice was selfish but also selfless. Like, she could've just blocked the hallway leading to the heart of Etheria with a force field after rescuing Catra from the creature trying to kill them. But she chose to sacrifice herself instead of trying to survive and mend her relationship with Catra and Adora. I think maybe she was punishing herself too, for contributing to their pain over the years and just being selfish (would explain the "It's too late for me." This could've also been said because she realized that she could not gain any more power). She felt that there was nothing left to do, and chose to do something that'd force them to appreciate her and know that a part of her did actually care (and removed her mask for extra emphasis).
She was always driven by self-interest in some way, always doing something shady and looking for power (even while helping to save the planet she was low-key hoping to gain some magical power from the heart).
But in the end she finally said enough, and decided that she wanted to give the future to her prize pupils. Adora needed Catra by her side to save the world (plus the universe), so she wasn't gonna let either of them die and gave her own life instead. Tis like... A fucked up apology that you can't reject asdfghjm (ya could see it as her still being manipulative in her final moments. Classic shadow weaver-). And she's like "You're welcome."
