part one wc: 2.6k pairing: jack abbot x wife!reader summary: your daughter suffers a harsh hit during her hockey game and jack's doctor instincts kick in immediately. c. warning: nothing, really, just pure fluff. a/n: i love writing about this little family so much. also, sorry i was gone for so long, but the past two weeks i've been working and traveling nonstop so i didn't really have time to sit and write. also, please appreciate how i've poured all the hockey knowledge i've gathered from reading smutty hockey romances over the years into this story. i've something doesn't make sense, just know that we don't do that where i'm from and until i started writing this i wasn't entirely sure what the hell aa zamboni was. so, yeah. hope you enjoy!!

jack is dressed in his weekend uniform: a heavy, dark-knit sweater, worn jeans, and a faded baseball cap pulled low over his eyes. his large travel mug of black coffee is clamped between his hands, steam rising to meet the cold air. to anyone else in the crowded stands, he looks like just another hockey dad. but you know him better than anyone. you can see the calculated way his eyes track the zamboni smoothing out the ice, his internal clock ticking down the minutes until your twelve-year-old daughter takes the rink.
"you're doing that thing again," you murmur, leaning your shoulder into his broad chest. ârelax, jack. sheâll be fine.â
jack blinks, a soft, self-deprecating smile breaking through his expression as he glances down at you. he drops one hand from his coffee mug, laying his long, warm fingers on your thigh. jack lets out a low, rumbling chuckle, the sound vibrating against your ribs. he leans down, pressing a warm kiss against the side of your temple.
"can you blame me?" he whispers, his voice laced with that deep, grounding tenderness he reserves only for you. "old habits die hard. especially when my baby girl is about to hit the ice for the first time in months."
before you can answer, a small explosion of energy shifts between you. your five-year-old son, who had been distracted trying to drive a toy ambulance up the sleeve of jackâs jacket, scrambles onto his lap. he presses his cold nose against his fatherâs jaw, pointing a mittened hand toward the ice.
"daddy, look! there she is!â

Chapter Three: The Creek
previous chapter | next chapter
pairing: jack abbot / f!black!reader
summary: There's a goddess on the property. At least, that's what one of Jack's ranch hands insists on after finding you swimming in the creek. Jack goes to investigate, and finds himself in more trouble than he anticipated. (wc: 2.8k)
content: no use of y/n, black female reader (hair, skin descriptions), minimal reader description, slow burn, small town romance, reader has an established career, mutual pining, reader is swimming and has a banging bod, au jack abbot as a rancher, a dog, flirting kinda, idk what to put in these things
âJack!â Jack raises his head from a fence post he just dropped into its new hole. Heâd turned his hat backward a while ago, needing easy access to his forehead so he could wipe away the sweat before it stung his eyes.
âWhat is it, Everett?â Everett is out of breath, hands braced on his knees as he gulps in oxygen. Everett is Jackâs youngest ranch hand at 19, and has a flair for the dramatic. Jack thinks all the books he reads contribute to the ideas he gets in his head, but he and the ranch hands love the entertainment Everett brings them.
Everett rises and looks around at the group, hauling heavy lumber into the holes theyâd just dug, but obviously listening in to hear what heâs going to say. Everett pauses.
âJackâŚâ Jack plants his hands on his waist and shifts his weight. His prosthesis is rubbing and aching with all the sweat and labor theyâve been up to all day. âThereâs a goddess on the property.â
The ten ranch hands around Jack snort loudly, snickering at the statement. If Jack werenât so bone tired, and in a bit of pain, heâd laugh too.

frank castle, fem, short
Frankâs been mulling the decision over for minutes now; his head in hands, bouncing his knee, muttering to himself. When he finally comes to it, he calls you over.
âSweetheart?â
âYeah?â You call back, padding to the living room couch from where you were in the bathroom. You're softened up with lotion and clad in a cotton-soft set he got you on a whim, hair still damp from your shower. The sight makes his heart thud harder than a drum.
He pats the cushion next to him. âWould you câmere for a sec? I got something for you.â
Curious, you round the couch and place yourself exactly where he said, tucking your legs underneath you. âWhat's it?â
He clenches his jaw before fishing in his pocket for a second. He holds out his palm, and in it there's two small charms attached to a chain; his dog tags from the Marines.
You look up at him, confused. He keeps his gaze down on his hand before grabbing yours and pressing the tags into your palm.
You swipe over the engravings with your thumb, feeling for his name. The weight of the sentiment isn't lost on you. âFrank?â
He swallows, and youâve never seen him so boyish before, not in all your time together. âWant you to have them,â he mumbles.
You lean closer, holding the tags tight. âBut they're yours. You always wear them.â
Frank shakes his head. âIâm yours. I want you to have them.â
You know better than to fight him, and you know this is more intimate than an I love you from Frank. He's giving you a piece of his past, hoping you'll keep it safe with the other parts of him.
âOkay,â you whisper, bringing your forehead to his. His hand wraps around your nape, pulling you closer and into his neck. âThank you, Frank.â
You feel a kiss on your hairline, and he makes a mental note to himself: a ring next time.

thank u guys for all the love this is insane I didnât expect anyone to read this đŤ
He had been minding his business, he really had, for once in his life. Jack stood there, toothbrush in hand as he lent forward, looking at himself in the mirror as he brushed his teeth. His salt and pepper curls a little disheveled from having his hand run through them throughout his shift, his eyes squinting a little at his own reflection, brows pinching just a fraction as he looked over his face, noticing the dark circles under his eyes and the new wrinkles that had started to form and others that deepened around his eyes. Letting out a sigh as he spit some of the foam out and into the sink before continuing to brush, making sure he went all the way to the back teeth. At the sound of soft shuffling, his ears pricked up, eyes shifting in the mirror to catch the movement as you came into view, making your way into the bathroom. Jack slowly turned, resting his hip against the edge of the sink as his gaze fully landed on you, his hand letting go of the toothbrush in favor of reaching for you, the handle of the brush still striking out of his mouth as his fingers slipped around your wrist, catching it in his hold as he gently tugged you towards him. You smelled like sleep and warmth, your own hair messy from sleep and ticking his chin as he pulled you into his chest, tucking you into him as his arms circled over your shoulders, keeping you trapped to him. You could feel your chest pressed to his through the fabric of your shirt, his shirt that you had stolen to sleep in because it was big and cozy and smelled like him. Your eyes still lingered with the haze of sleep, your day just starting as his was about to end, your arms finding their way around his hips, hugging him in return as you brushed your lips to his chest before lifting your chin up and tilting your head back to look up at him even as your chest remained pressed to him.Â
âI have to tell you something.â you say, seemingly out of the blue, causing jack to frown just slightly as he looked down at you, lips curving downwards as his eyes flickered over your face, trying to decipher your words and figure out how serious you were being, if the way his heart rate went up at those words was indeed necessary. His arms wrapped around your shoulders giving a light squeeze in anticipation for you to continue as his hand back to the handle of the toothbrush to resume his brushing. You let the silence linger for a few beats, building the tension before exhaling and straightening up just a little as if this was indeed a very serious matter, like you needed to get whatever was weighing on your chest, off. âI have a crush on you.â You admit, the words coming out like you had just revealed some deep secret about yourself, your eyes staying locked on his face to catch his reaction, and oh was it one to see. Jack's hand stilled on the toothbrush, his eyes widening as he blinked like you had just told him the sky was green, because were you joking? The tips of his ears turned pink as he farrowed his brow, he opened his mouth to say something but then remembered the toothpaste foam that was currently filling his mouth and moved to spit it out in the sink, finally relinquishing his hold on you long enough to do so. Rinsing the toothpaste down the drain and putting his toothbrush back in is holder before turning aback to you, he lent back against the sink, arms crossing over his chest as he tried desperately to look as unaffected by your words as possible, but the amusement that danced in his eyes gave him away. âMe?â He asked, trying to sound nonchalant with the clarification but there was a gentleness to his tone like he couldn't help but feel honored, touched by the thought alone. When your teeth sunk into your lower lip, failing miserably to hide your smile as you nodded in conformation, that was the last straw. Jack's hands finding their way to either side of your face, large palms covering most of your face as he cradled your head between them, his lips finding yours as kissed you. His eyes squeezed closed as he held you like you were the most precious thing known man and to him you were his lisp pressing to yours as if he could pour all his love for you into that singular kiss. Pulling back just enough to breath as his forehead rested against yours, refusing to let even a breath pass between you right now, the corners of his mouth now curved upwards into a smug little smirk as his eyes took in your now glistening lips, pinkened cheeks and wide pupils, ducking his head back down to press a peck to the corner of your mouth, before exhaling and whispering softly. âI have a crush on you too.â His words made your heart flutter despite their simplicity, but then again your husband did always manage to make your heart beat faster.Â

jack had been alone for a very, very long time romantically before you came along. if he had to think back on it, youâd been a sweet little thing heâd courted properly â dinners, doors held, the whole nineteenth-century shebang â and youâd been perfectly amicable. he was pretty sure youâd told him at some point that you waited to text him back. youâd been two drinks deep when you told him, and heâd been confused and asked you, âwho taught you that?â
youâd shrugged, so breezy, the picture of cool, which told him everything youâd learned about dating in your entire life.
heâd tipped his beer at you, very unimpressed. he didnât like it one bit! there you were â the girl whose texts heâd been answering at red lights (sometimes even while driving) like a criminal, whose name coming up on his phone had him feeling like a silly teenager and twice his blood pressure â thinking that you had to make yourself scarce. some asshole had clearly gotten to you before jack did and taught you this stupid thing.
so heâd told you right then and there, on your second date, âwell, that doesnât work on me, and you donât need it. you can just text me back, sweetheart. iâm gonna want you either way.â
looking back, that was probably what killed the girl who left his place at a reasonable hour, had plans that really, really couldnât be shifted for a last minute date, and said things like âiâll check my calendar!â
he wouldâve been lying if he said he wasnât glad that girl was long gone. heâd spent so long being a man whose comings and goings were nobodyâs business, and now you noticed new things about him in under four seconds. he had no idea what heâd done to deserve being watched with such loving and he was careful never to ask, in case some higher deity somewhere would realize this wasnât for him.
and sure, he knew that there was some deeply unhealthy codependency at play in this relationship. especially on nights like these where he had somewhere to be that wasnât the precise square footage of the couch youâd zoned for him. the plan was at a bar, a send-off for a resident he actually did like. heâd said it out-loud at six-thirty and youâd gone so fucking quiet and went to the far end of the cushion.
SADIEEEEE FEED ME MORE IM STILL HUNGRY
I PROMISE I HAVE LITERALLY SOOOO MUCH MORE OF THEM COMING
#and robby betta mind his own business before my fist start a swingin
U R SO RIGHT canonically in my mind controversially young gf and robby have beef bc she stole jack from him
from what we've seen in the show, you can't convince me that jack doesn't live for a good gossip session. and he's so messy with it too. like he does not care who's around, whether they're the victim or just an innocent bystander, he's talking about the latest gossip with you.
you were sitting at your desk, typing up one of your charts, when jack comes rolling in on a chair beside you. "did you hear about the latest girl of robby's?" he asks you, not even bothering to whisper. that catches your attention almost immediately. far more interesting than the information on screen in front of you.
"no, who?"
"do you remember shannon? she's one of the on call psychiatrists here." you nod. "well, apparently, she and robby hooked up last night and he left in the middle of the night. didn't even bother to leave a note. just up and left."
"how do you know all this?"
"because he's my best friend, sweetheart," he says it in that 'duh' like tone. "he told it to me himself. oh and the tension between them when they ran into each other earlier? it was uncomfortable as hell. you should've been there."
you snort, looking back at your charts. "god, i wish. no offense to your best friend, jack, but he's got a terrible track record with women. and she's so nice too! i can't believe he would ever do that to her."
"trust me, i've tried telling him that. but he just won't listen. no matter how many times-" jack's voice gets cut off with a sharp clear of someone's throat. it's almost comical the way you both simultaneously turn around, only to come face to face with gloria.
"are you two working or gossiping?" she asks with a stern look, crossing her arms.
nothing but a squeak comes out of you. jack might be an attending, meaning he's practically invincible to gloria and her punishment. but you were just starting your residency here at ptmc. she could easily write you off and send you away. but the man comes to your rescue without a second thought.
"don't get mad at her, gloria. she was working and i interrupted her. that's on me," jack says smoothly, shooting her his charming smile. it works well enough for her, since she accepts his answer with a soft hum before walking away.
"we'll finish our discussion later, sweetheart," he whispers to you, shooting you a wink.
flash forward a couple months to a year, and you're both dating. over time you had learned that jack was partially deaf due to his time in the army, so he occasionally relied on sign language to communicate. which he obviously taught you. your movements were a little more rusty and slow compared to his, but he was patient whenever you tried to talk to him using your hands. having this silent way of talking made it so much easier to gossip when at work. because now you didn't have to worry about others hearing you.
ellis and shen stand by the charge nurse's station, watching as you two talk by signing accordingly. "are they gossping in... sign language?" shen asks, taking a sip from his seemingly never empty dunkin cup.
"yeah, abbot started teaching it to her shortly after she got here," ellis answers.
"he never taught us sign language after we started working here."
"true, but we didn't start dating or move in with him either."
shen shrugs, taking another sip. "that's fair."
a loud laugh escapes you at something that jack signs, to which a huff of laughter comes from him in return. there's a small smile of admiration on his face, as well.
"i'm kinda jealous," shen speaks up after seeing that display.
"...yeah, me too. maybe she'll teach us so we can all gossip together."

every time jack has a night off, the two of you have a routine.
yes, sometimes you go on fancy dates to expensive restaurants, sometimes he takes you out to town in his luxurious car, but your real routine is to just⌠relax.
you take a warm shower together, sit on the couch, order takeout, and watch shitty movies until one of you falls asleep on the couch (you), and the other doesnât have the heart to wake them up (jack).
thatâs pretty much exactly what youâre doing tonight; youâre curled up next to him, resting your head on his shoulder, and (supposed to be) picking the first movie of the night. but youâre distracted. his arms are just so⌠there.
since he joined SWAT, youâve been worried because youâre not sure itâs a very⌠healthy hobby, but heâs gotten so beefy. he had muscles before, but god he looks good now. for a few moments, you just stare, and then you lean down and kiss his bicep.
he smiles, looking down at you, âcomfy, baby?â
you nod, and you gently bite down. itâs affectionate, itâs not to hurt him. youâre trying not to laugh, watching the confusion on his face.
âwhatâs⌠whatâs that for, love?â
you grin, ânothing, youâre just so⌠eatable. your arms are⌠wow. i wanna bite them.â
jack chuckles, âyeah? you wanna eat me, baby?â he leans down, coaxing you to lay down on the couch as you giggle. he smiles, pressing a soft kiss to your lips, âwell⌠canât say i mind.â
