hello! since you’re one of the biggest mxtx blogs here, what is your opinion on that interview of hers?
Hi! I’m guessing you’re pertaining to the old interview here? Okay, first of all, I didn’t expect it to be such an issue bc I honestly thought almost everyone was aware of it already whelp Anyhow, I’m not sure where exactly you want to hear my opinion on as the interview’s quite long so I’m going to assume you’re talking about the issues I’ve seen brought up in twitter and weibo.
CONTEXT
I think it started bc of that translated interview plus what happened in weibo with one international artist who got flaked bc of misunderstandings. I’m not gonna go into detail with the latter but just to be clear, those are the sides of the story that I know so if there are other points I am not aware of, feel free to bring them on the table. 👌🏼
MULTISHIPPING
Disclaimer for full transparency: WangXian is 100% my only serious, would die for ship, and I’m not that fond of them not ending up together (and when I have a lot of feelings—SongXiao gets included) but I do have a lot of crack/trash pairs and the like.
I have said it before but I will always have the same stance on this—listen, we’re in a fandom and you never police fan content. If you only wanted what’s canon then it’s easy to stay away from fanarts, fanfics, etc. If you only like WangXian and hate them being broken up then just consume that kind of content. If you don’t like anyone else being gay besides them then just consume that kind of content. If you hate WangXian and ship them both with other people then just consume that kind of content. I know MXTX requested not to break up the main couple and said that besides them everyone else is straight—but again, this is a fandom. A fandom’s base isn’t just the author but predominantly the fans since content comes from the latter as well. Stop policing what kind of content the fandom has because of what the author said. All of these contents are made for fun of the fictional characters and as long as you don’t shove your hate/love to someone who has another stand than you then there is no problem. Again, consume the content you want to consume and leave the others alone. MXTX is human just like the rest of us, so chill on the “her word is the word of god!!!”. If you have time policing other people’s content then maybe you can use that time to make more content on what you want. There are tags and the like for a reason—you can easily follow or block contents with those. I’ve also seen claims that “you can’t say you love wangxian but ship them with other characters at the same time!!!”—and I don’t know if this is newsflash, but uh people can actually like multiple things at once; just bc you can’t, doesn’t mean others also can’t.
LGBT+ OUTLOOK
Disclaimer for full transparency: Despite staying for some time in USA, I was born and raised in a conservative Asian country and am currently living in one right now; and I’m bi.
Another issue I saw floating around was MXTX’s statement about everyone else being straight except WangXian because it would be weird to suddenly have more than one gay couple. OKAY STOP BEFORE REACTING—again, context is very important. MXTX is around my age so that’s 20 something plus our author grew up in China where just like some other Asian countries, is actually conservative in nature. Basing from my experience, I have observed how more open the Westerners are in being “out” as gay (ofc this is not to say they have it easier or that it applies to everyone) compared to conservative Asian countries. As such, personally, if my context was that the setting of the story is in the West in this new age, I’d def see more gay relationships. However, the novel is set in ancient China (conservatism, gender roles being strictly defined, etc.) and thus, seeing more gay couples would definitely be not the norm. I’ve seen arguments saying that “ohh so what magic is easier to be seen than gay people???” and it’s just—guys, I don’t think that’s the point of what MXTX said and you’ll most probably understand this if you take in the context of things (MXTX’s culture and environment, the story itself, etc.). I do believe this isn’t an attack to us in the LGBT+ community but just MXTX saying what is a norm to her. And remember, what is status quo for Person A might not be the same for Person B and vice versa—but that doesn’t mean one is wrong necessarily.
tl;dr
the author is human just like us; consume what content you want and leave others alone
