also, the way the time, light and heart aspects all relate to hardship for the sake of narrative is really interesting:

time = conflict, inevitability, chronology light = relevance, plot focus, story direction heart = character development

all of these characters try to force development by putting someone through trials in order to shape them into a heroic image. heroism has two parts: power (or more specifically, masculine dominance) and noble intentions. the ideal hero is both strong, and willing to make sacrifices for the greater good.

bro's and vriska's attempts at mentorship obviously don't work. dave and tavros already have good intentions, so bro and vriska focus on making their students more hardened and aggressive in order to build strength. but dave and tavros are averse to violence, so this "training" only ends up traumatizing them and making them "weaker".

caliborn already has a thirst for destruction and violence, so he's got the power of a hero. but of course, he's not a hero, he's a villain. so caliborn doesn't need noble intentions. instead, what AH teaches caliborn is patience, or the ability to endure tedium for a big payoff that is promised to him further down the line. and that's what storytelling's all about: buildup and climax.

lord english's presence in the story is pretty much entirely built on anticipation. he's a big ol threat, and we follow the protagonists as they are manipulated into causing his birth, and then must prepare to take him down (notably, vriska is pretty much the only one to fully focus on killing lord english. every other chump in the story can fuck around all they want, 8ut when it comes down to it, the plot's still gotta happen!!!!!!!! (light aspect moment)).

if anything, AH as a figure in the story is the culmination of "suffering builds character," because they're the author, and are directly responsible for the story structure that terrorizes its characters. can't have a good story without conflict, rising action, and climax. can't be a hero without a little suffering.
