Let's add another grid position tomorrow, we need that P5 - P1 win to add to the collection.
Liam Lawson on Max's support and what it's like to race against him | High Performance Podcast
Liam: In general, Max was just always very real, like he's somebody that in such a high level position was you know– such an accomplished position that he's had so much success, it'd be very easy for him to not be like that. And it's not just with me, he seems to be like that with everybody.
And I think Max is somebody that just wants to race cars and loves to talk about cars, loves to talk about racing, and so when I came in, he was just always, very– even when I was a reserve actually, like I always noticed that he would always make an effort to just acknowledge me and say hi and stuff like this, and when I first was a reserve (...) he knew I was racing F2, he'd come and ask me about it, 'how's F2 going?', 'how's the car?', 'how's everything feeling?' I just like– the fact that he was asking me about my stuff, I remember at the time was just really cool. And he's just always been very real like that. And then when I went to Red Bull through all of it, he was very supportive (...), he was very supportive, you know ,very very supportive (...)
Dani Juncadella on COPE GP(1)
(Tell me, Dani, what is it like when Max Verstappen looks at you and says, "Hey, why don't you do the start at the Nürburgring?")
Well, on one hand, it's an honor. When a driver of that caliber has the confidence to tell you, "Hey, you take the lead at the start, and in Q3 too, during the most critical moments of the weekend," it makes you feel great and highly motivated. But that’s just a skill Max has—he passes that leadership energy on to the people around him. I think that pretty much sums it up in general. On the other hand, you know, I have a lot of experience in this race; I’ve spent many years competing at this level, so I was really excited for it too.
(Is he the best driver you have ever competed alongside as a teammate?)
Yes, without a doubt. He is the most impressive guy I have ever shared a garage with. I’ve learned so much from sharing all of this with him. Obviously, I have immense admiration for him. I already did before, but now even more so. I believe there are only two drivers in the world right now who are that special. Max is one, and you already know who the other is. Fernando Alonso, in my opinion—at least from what I see from the outside.
This time I had the chance to teammate with Max, but it honestly made me think back to the Daytona 24 Hours. The first one Fernando did—not the one he won, but the year before with Zak Brown's team and Lando Norris as his teammate. We were both running in LMP2, and it was a weekend where we had absolutely no pace compared to the Daytona Prototypes that were dominating. I vividly remember doing a night stint right behind Fernando, just following him. I basically spent an hour doing nothing but trailing his car. He was slicing through traffic for me, and it was mind-blowing to see the risks he took, how sensitive he was to knowing exactly where to push, and how perfectly he judged the exact moment to pull off an overtake on slower cars.
Those are the things that set these drivers apart. Because on a single lap, we can all do it. There are plenty of drivers in the world with the level to lay down a fast lap matching the very best. But that ability to manage traffic, that innate feel they have... in my case, Max is the best I've ever seen up close, and I am certain Fernando is very much the same.
(It would be amazing, wouldn't it? A Hypercar team with the three of you at Le Mans.)
Yeah, yeah, man, I definitely wouldn't say no to that! Look, I've already earned the trust of one of them; now I just need Fernando's.
(Fernando's insane night stint at the Daytona 24H)
That’s exactly what makes them special—knowing how to make a defining difference in moments like that. It's the same with Max when he takes over the car in tenth place after the first stint. Because of the different race strategies, we dropped down to tenth during the pit stop, and from there, within two hours, he gets into first place. And it’s a constant theme with him—watching him take risks in traffic. We were saying it before the 24-hour race: "Wow, he takes a lot of risks. In a 24-hour race, you have to be more careful." But the thing is, he doesn't know how to drive any other way. The incredible part is that he has the feel to take that extra risk without crashing. I kept thinking, "Man, if he keeps this up, we're going to crash," but he never does.
So, in the end, there are things you just have to accept, and I am very honest with myself. I know I am a great driver, but I am not Max Verstappen and I never will be, and that’s fine.
It’s like if you’re talking about Leo Messi, you know? Ultimately, you just grab a notepad, a pen, start taking notes, and learn. And that is the way you have to approach an opportunity like this, which for me is unique—being able to share something like that. I'm telling you, it has made me a better driver.

I spoke to someone at Le Mans who was very close to [Max's] GT program on the Nordschleife and he said: "He's a freak." He goes all the way to extract every last bit from the people, the technology, the shock absorbers. He brought in a box of absorbers he got from a guy he knows in France: "These are the absorbers we're driving with." So AMG's completely pissed off: 'We don't want that because we've got, I don't know, Bilstein as German absorber manufacturer.'
But well, he's just like his dad. You could also call him on the Friday of a kart-race weekend and say: "In the south of Italy they've got a carburettor that's half a tenth faster," and Jos would get in the car in the middle of the night to go pick up that carburettor. And that's how Max is too. That's a family thing: get everything out of it. - Renger van der Zande, Ziggo Race Café De Stamtafel
Every time some random F1 fan posts a “max seems like he has really calmed down this season” / “max seems more mature these days” / “max is so much more likeable lately” type of comment a fairy dies. Violently.
We get one photo of him congratulating a rival and these people act like he’s “turned over a new leaf” ever since becoming a father, or something wild, as though he hasn’t always been like that.
I beg you people to go and read the shit max has been saying for years. And no, I don’t mean the controversial one-liners that are infamous - not that those didn’t happen or anything - I mean all the other things he has said and done for years now, consistently. Please, actually read an interview from at least a few years ago. Or watch some footage of him in the first few years of his career. He’s not a cyborg, he’s a human, and he’s definitely grown up a lot - just like every other human has over the past 10 years of their lives - but it’s so annoying watching people act like he has suddenly matured just because the media have actually posted a positive piece about him and/or he hasn’t been in a fight on track recently.
it’s extra annoying knowing that the moment max goes wheel to wheel with anyone and is even slightly aggressive, the narrative will shift back to the “he has never changed” “he will never mature” shit that is purely reacting to his on-track shenanigans and judging his entire character for it. So then once he says something in the media that you agree with you’ll have to go through the whole cycle of “he has calmed down” etc. again when nothing has actually changed. And it will happen, because yeah, max has never changed his driving-style, something he himself has talked about in interviews before if anyone cared to read or hear them.
So, please, think of the fairies and just read what he has been saying for years now so we don’t have to sit through these comments anymore. He has literally always been very grounded and down to earth 🧚 💕
max giving kimi advice for the start:
"so when the light goes out, you wait 1 second.."
max when asked if he isn't a little bummed then about p2 with the margin to kimi being so small: "i didn't make any mistakes so i think you can't be very negative then."
