How did this happen? How could he possibly let this happen?! This had nothing to do with you. You were innocent. The only association you had with this life was your family, and he failed to protect you from it. He’ll have to beg for forgiveness - but he’ll have to do that later. Because right now, the priority is to get his baby sister back.
Recently, the Heathens have been having more and more run-ins with the Serpents. The smaller gang had been causing more issues, each one more intense than the last. Each one concerning the members of the russian mafia more and more as the days pass. You were the younger child in the Sokolov family. As much as you loved and respected your family, you wanted as little to do with the mafia as possible. You wanted to pursue your degree at TKU and continue wth you career after that. It’s not that you fully disagree with the “family business”, you just don’t see yourself in it.
Nikolai had always been one of your best friends. He was your number one fan and biggest protector. Not that you are distant with anyone else in your family, but you are particularly close to Niko. There were suspicions that you were battling the same kinds of demons that your brother does. There were peaks of the same type of chaos that lurked in your brother in you. The same kind of glint in your eyes that he had during his “episodes”. The same blind, self-destructive rage that sometimes had you locking yourself in your room for days on end. Biting your nails as far as you could, pacing back and forth, doing your best to contain the rage. The only person who seemed to understand and bring you down from that high was Nikolai. Your family called the two of you by every duo nickname in the book, two peas in a pod, partners in crime - literally sometimes, two of a kind. You spent every moment possible together.
You enjoyed the small, playful moments and adventures you two take when he isn’t busy with the bratfa or his Husband. You have a great relationship with Brandon. He's kind to you and even helps you paint in his studio every once and awhile. You by no means have any interest in becoming an artist, but you think it’s fun sometimes. Plus, it helps you bond better with the man who stole your wild brother's heart.
You had been living on your own for a while now. Most of the family stayed in New York since graduating and taking their place in the bratfa - including Nikolai. You missed him a lot, wishing you could see him more often. But knew everyone - including yourself - was pretty busy. You had just started your last year and were ready to get things finished and over with. Things were going so well. Busy with school work and keeping in touch with the family you have in NYC. But now? You hoped that somehow you could reach them with some sort of telekenisis or pure hope itself.
You were walking back to your car after getting dinner with some friends. Midterms had just passed, and all of you had felt you deserved a little pat on the back to celebrate making it through. Walking down the strip of small shops, diners, and cafes. You were passing by an alley when it happened. Everything happened so fast that no amount of self-defense training could save you. Someone had grabbed you by the back of the shirt, yanking you back from the sidewalk and into the alley. Before you could scream, a strong-smelling cloth was slapped over your face. You kicked, scratched, bit, and did everything you could do to try and escape, but nothing worked. Within a matter of a minute, everything had gone black.
You had woken up in some small, dark concrete room. There weren’t any windows, and your only source of light was a small lightbulb hanging from the ceiling. There was a single metal door on the opposite wall from you with a small barred window on it, covered in newspaper and cardboard. Your ankles were shackled to the walk with a couple of yards of chain. Sitting up on the dirty mattress you had woken up on. There was a bucket sitting in a dark, further corner.
Looking down at yourself, you realize that you are not in the original clothes you were in before. You were now in a dirty pair of baggy gym shorts and an equally dirty and baggy t-shirt. Seeing this, it hits you all once; you have no phone, communication, or way of escaping, trapped with who knows. Backing against the wall, you try not to panic. The chaotic demons deep inside you started to unsettle fuling your panic more. As if they could sense it, two men walked into the room.
One was tall and lanky with dark, floppy hair and even darker eyes, with an unimpressed, dead look on his face. The other was just as tall with a little more muscle, dirty blonde hair, piercing green eyes, and a sleezy almost excited smile on his face. You continued to back up further until you hit the wall, unable to go any further. Your hands shook with a mixture of unchecked rage and fear, unsure which you felt more.
“Well, hello there, sleeping beauty”, The blonde one said.
“What do you want from me?!” You asked, trying and failing to keep your voice steady.
“Well theres a lot we want, sweetheart, but you're only good for two things”.
Slowly, he gets closer, crouching in front of the dirty mattress and leaning mere inches from your face. Watching your eyes dart around, looking desperately for escape, help, a chance to run, anything. Locking eyes with him, you didn’t even notice the blonde pull out hand-cuffs realizing too late when they click onto your wrists.
“Information, and bait”. He looked back at the dark-haired guy standing silently by the door.
You yanked on the cuffs as they dragged you to a chair you hadn’t even noticed was there. Scrambling to get away before they slammed you down into the seat before wrapping wrope aroundyour torso, tying you to the chair. The dark-haired one had opened the door and dragged a cart into the room, pulling it up next to you. You knew then and there what this was.
Nikolai was passing the living room of his place he shared with Brandon. He stared at his phone, questioning what the hell was bothering him so much. He hadn’t heard from you at all today. Infact he hadn’t heard from you since you said you were headed home after having dinner with friends last night. It was now almost 6 in the evening the next day. Was that what was bothering him? It’s not like you could’t just be busy. Was he just spiraling into another episode? No, this felt different. He decided to give a few of your friends a call. It seemed no one knew where you were, and he started getting angry. Frantic. His inner demons swirling inside of him.
Just when he was debating calling one of your friends back to badger them for more information, his phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number. Normally, he’d ignore them the same way he ignores the voicemails in his overflowing digital mailbox. But something made him open this one. Appon opening it nd reading it, his anger slowly grew more and more until he felt that familiar red rage start to wash over him.
Or should I call you Nikolai? Niko? I mean thats what shes been screaming for the past 12 hours. Sorry I’m getting ahead of myself.
I’m sure you’ve noticed by now that a certain little shadow of yours hasn’t been responding to your incessant messages. She’s currently a little occupied doing us a couple of favors.
If you want to see your darling sister ever again, you will turn over Jeremy Volkov to the address I’m about to send you within the next 48 hours.
If he arrives in any other state besides unarmed and alone you sister will be bearing the consequences of those actions. And because we are so generous, here’s a picture of your little mini as a sign of good faith.
See you soon, The Serpents.”
After reading the messages that flooded his phone, he did his best not to crush it in his hands. The last message dinged into his phone as a picture of you filled his screen. You were curled in on yurself sitting against a wall, on top of a dirty and ripped mattress on the floor, hands cuffed and feet shackled to the wall. Your hair was a disheveled mess, and you were in cloths hes never seen you wear before.
But none of that made him see red like seeing the cuts and bruises littering your skin and face. Your left eye was almost swollen shut, and you were missing a couple of nails. Your eyebrow and lip were split and bleeding. Red was forming around your wrists and ankles due to your restraints. On top of all the pain he saw littering your body, the look on your face is what cracked his chest open the most.
Your face was blank. Eyes dead in a way he only knewment trouble. You were spiraling. Face devoid of any emotion other than indifference and a slight rage behind your eyes, making them dull in a way he only saw when you were deep in an episode. The rage and impulsive demons the two of you shared scraped at the confines he knew you worked so hard to build.
This was fucked. Extremely so, and nothing was going to stand in the way of him fixing this. He wouldn’t stand for this. How dare they think they could even thinkabout hurting you and get away with it. Let alone actually do it. He knew who his first call was going to be to.
Numb. Sharp, tingling, mind-numbingly infuriating pain. It was everywhere. Pressing you into the dark box, you tried to seal shut in your brain. This was better than the painful pleading you had been doing previously. Preferring this over fighting against your demons anymore. ‘It’s protection,’ you told yourself. You didn’t feel the pain anymore, just a dull throb. In the back of your head, you knew this wasn’t good, that you were slipping, but were too tired to care.
They had tortured you for information about the Heathens for three hours. Refusing to feed you, not that they had been to begin with, waterboarding, Small cuts with a pocket knife, straight up beating you, and even taking a few fingernails off your right hand. You passed out at some point after that because you woke up on the mattress again. Groaning and barely able to form a coherent thought.
Maybe if you break one of your fingers, you can just slip your hands from the cuff and maybe figure something out with the wall shackles. Or maybe you could play dead. Freak them out until they try to get rid of your “body” and fight your way out. Nikolai had taught you how to hold your breath during his “underwater meditation” sessions. You had started doing it on your own at some point. Slowly learning to breathe so shallow you had - in your family's words - “pulled a Niko” and scared them into thinking you had stopped breathing altogether.
You lie there. Still. Eyes darting even more like a caged animal. Your head swam barley keeping a train of thought all at once. Lying there, you started to dig your nails into your palms in a desperate attempt to keep yourself aware. Refusing to come down even half a notch in fight mode. The buzzing in your body is getting louder with the need for it. The need to range and claw your way out and destroy whatever your hands can get their hands on. Craving the violence and chaos,s your mind clung to.
You were staring at the blood starting to drip from your palms from the crents your jagged nails had made. It being the only thing keeping you from slipping into complete unconsciousness. You had been paying attention to the soft commotion outside coming from above you, slowly to your room, only feeling the thud in your head intensifying at the unregistered sound. You didn’t realize the banging on your door until you heard a loud pop, making your head snap up. Two more loud pops sounded, making you stiffen as the door rattled before falling from its hinges and crashing to the floor.
You stare at the open entrance, not immediately recognizing the figure standing there with a smoking gun. You start the vibration, hand digging into itself more. You stare through the clearing dust, as someone you feel you should be recognizing stalks toward you with a similar expression on their face. Looking up, your brain slowly processes the face as they crouch down to your level holsterng the gun into the back of their waistband. It's Niko. He came. He’s here, and by the sounds, he’s not alone. When did this happen? How did he know?
Nikolai sees the tagged animal look on your face and softens immediately. Slowly, he reaches into his pocket, pulling out a key. He reaches towards you, and you flinch back.
“Sweetheart…it’s alright, it’s Niko… you're safe now. It’s just a key. I want to get these chains off so we can get you out of here.”
Unable to speak, too strung out on rage and adrenaline to form a coherent sentence, you slowly allow him to unlatch you from your cuffs and shackles. As you slowly roll out your jointssomeone else enters the room. It’s Killian. He walks up behind your brother, and before either can react, you pounce.
You're screaming and almost growling like a rabid dog as you attempt to grab Killian by the throat. He steps back cursing as Nikolai scoops you up in his arms. Dragging you back with ease and cradling you against his chest while you struggle be released fromhis hold.
“What the hell?! I saved your life ya’know! Your fucking welcome!”
“Kill, calm down. She didn’t mean it and you know it! I don’t even think she knows where she is right now. I think she’s somewhere between reality and probably the worst episode of her life.”
Nikolai looks down at you as your fighting slows. You’re panting and killing the last of the energy that you have. He smooths the hair away from your face as he slowly lowers the two of you to the floor. Holding you in his lap, doing his best to keep his own demons in check, for your sake. You huff tears you’re not aware of rolling down the dirt and blood on your face. Killian slowly backs away, walking out of the room.
“It’s alright sweetheart, you can let go now. I’m here, your brother is here, Niko is here. Jer and Kill are taking care of them. They are definitely going on the MIA list. You’ll never have to deal with them again. Just come back to us..come back to me…please?”
After a little while of coaxing and sitting, Nikolai is finally able to lift you into his arms and carry you from the basement of the abandoned house they found you in. He knows it will be a while before you truly come back to him - to come back to yourself. But he knows he’ll be there every second of every minute for as long as it takes.
