@nurturesmind​   sent:    ‘   have   you   no   compassion   for   my   poor   nerves?   ’

“   and   have   you   none   for   mine?   ”    if   there   was   one   thing   each   and   every   single   bridgerton   was   good   at,   it   was   pushing   each   other’s   buttons.   this   time,   anthony   had   told   eloise   that   they   were   attending   a   ball   ——   together.   it   was   about   time.    “   come   on,   sister.   it’s   just   a   few   hours.   all   we   have   to   do   is   walk   in   together   and   walk   out   together.   ”

of  course  kate  had  noticed  it.  that  far  away look  in  his  eye  when  he  spies  the  ring  that  now  rests  on  her  left  finger.  one  that  had  once  belonged  to  his  mother,  and  who  their  son  (  should  they  be  so  lucky  to  have  one  )  might  gift  to  his  future  wife.  she  wonders  if,  perhaps,  thoughts  of  their  married  life  taunt  him  as  they  do  her.  so  close,  just  within  their  reach,  and  still agonisingly  far  away.  with  this  engagement  they  should  be  forced  to  wait  the  appropriate  amount  of  time  to  wed.  any  talk  of  a  special  licence  would  surely  send  the  ton  digging  for  a  scandal  that  simply  isn’t  there.  the  queen  may  have  already  saved  them  from  some  gossip,  but  kate  knows  that  even  the  slightest  wrong  move  would  send  the  mouths  of  the  ton’s  distinguished  mama’s  talking  again.  still,  she  finds  herself  leaning  her  head  towards  his,  so  that  only  anthony  may  hear  her  words. 

a  laugh  floats  from  kate’s  lips.  she  pulls  her  head  back,  noticing  the  few  looks  they  have  already  gathered.  it  seems  that  the  whispering  has  already  begun.    ❝    my  lord,  i  fear  you  give  your  charm  too  much  credit.    ❞    though  it  was  true  he  had  utterly  charmed  her.  mind,  body,  and  soul.    ❝    though  i  suppose  there  is  something  to  be  said  for  that  smile  of  yours.    ❞    she  hears  lady  danbury's  crane  hit  the  ground  with  extra  force,  maybe  to  remind  the  couple  that  she  is,  in  fact,  still  there.  kate  stifles  another  laugh.  perhaps  their  chaperon  doesn’t  wish  to  hear  their  lovesick  words,  but  then  kate  would  argue  that,  in  that  case,  lady  danbury  shouldn’t  chaperon  them  at  all.   ❝    i  wish  we  could  be  married  right  this  minute.    ❞

he   wished   it   too,   of   course.   her   laughter   is   intoxicating,   and   her   smile   produces   such   a   sickly   sweet   sensation   in   his   belly   that   he   wants   to   pounce   on   her   now,   regardless   of   what   lady   danbury   or   the   ton   had   to   think.   this   was   their   engagement,   this   was   their   marriage,   and   anthony   failed   to   see   what   business   anyone   outside   of   the   viscount   and   future   viscountess   had   to   do   with   their   marriage.

as much as lewis was disinclined to rely on a stranger’s help, he was desperate enough to find his party that he could overcome that instinct. the only thing worse than attending this race with sir astley was attending the race entirely alone. casting his gaze once more around the crowd, he replied, “ cooper. sir astley cooper, baronet. you must know him. ” after his successful operation on the prince regent, there were few who didn’t.

“   ah,   i   know   sir   cooper.   ”    hadn’t   met   the   fellow,   but   it   was   hard   to   ignore   the   importance   of   what   he   did   for   the   prince   regent.    “   are   you   a   surgeon   as   well   then,   sir?   if   you’re   in   his   company,   i   can   only   assume   such   a   thing.   ”

“   do   i   dance?   ”    was   this   a   joke?   no,   perhaps   she   was   new   to   london   ——   anthony   didn’t   expect   her   to   know   who   he   was,   but   he   was   certain   that   his   clothing   at   least   gave   away   that   he   could   ——   waltzing,   the   quadrille,   you   name   it.    “   erm,   yes,   i   do.   do   you?   ”
