@greenelight​   sent:    this was a really sweet, if a little crazy, thing to do.

atticus   was   no   stranger   to   crazy   things.   at   the   mere   mention,   about   a   dozen   crazy   things   he’d   done   in   the   past   week   came   to   mind:   running   from   a   spear - wielding   maniac.   stealing   some   vase   to   provoke   said   spear - wielding   maniac.   breaking   the   spear - wielding   maniac’s   vase.   compared   to   that,   showing   up   at   mason’s   door   with   flowers   from   spain   after   the   shortest   flight   he   could   find   seemed   completely   and   absolutely   sane.    “   well,   i   just   wanted   to   show   you   i   was   thinking   about   you.   ”    he   grins,   offering   the   bouquet   to   the   man   in   front   of   him.    “   what’s   even   crazier   is   that   i   snuck   some   cake   in   my   bag   and   didn’t   eat   it   the   whole   flight   .   .   .   wanna   share?   ”

THE   ACTOR   LAUGHS   AT   THE   MENTION   OF   THE   BOOKSTORE’S   CAT.   ah   yes   ,   mister   darcy.   both   his   co   -   worker   &   romantic   rival   for   atticus’   affections.   not   that   he   could   ever   blame   the   ginger   cat   for   all   the   love   he   pours   onto   the   traveler.   after   all   ,   he   too   finds   him   charming   &   likeable.   loveable   ,   even.   ❝   i   doubt   it.   who   could   ever   forget   someone   like   you   ?   you’re   kind   of   hard   to   miss   ,   &   that’s   not   a   diss   at   your   height.   ❞   despite   his   better   judgement   ,   mason’s   hand   reaches   over   to   flatten   out   a   few   wrinkles   out   of   the   taller   man’s   shirt   ,   a   seemingly   innocent   gesture   used   as   an   excuse   to   touch   ━━   to   press   his   palm   over   his   chest.   smiling   softly   ,   it   feels   like   eons   later   when   he   finally   moves   away   from   atticus   completely   ,   his   hand   returning   back   to   the   counter   with   a   small   smile.   ❝   you’ll   have   to   tell   me   everything   that   happened   while   you   were   away.   ❞   mason’s   tone   drops   to   a   low   whisper   ,   fingers   inching   close   to   his   boyfriend’s   hand   ,   but   he   doesn’t   dare   bridge   the   gap   completely.   ❝   d'you   still   like   lasagna   ?   i   could   make   that   tonight   while   you   catch   me   up.   ❞

he   wishes   he   could   grab   mason’s   hand,   reach   across   the   counter   and   kiss   him   ——   but   he   hardly   wants   mason   to   get   in   trouble.   so   he   enjoys   the   feeling   of   his   boyfriend’s   hands   on   his   chest,   then   enjoys   the   gesture   they   almost   share.    “   i   love   lasagna.   ”    atticus   grins.   he   can   feel   his   fingers   twitch,   almost   begging   to   touch   the   person   who   meant   the   most   in   the   world   to   him.    “   and,   if   i   can   recall,   the   person   who   makes   the   best   vegetarian   lasagna   in   the   world   is   standing   right   in   front   of   me.   ”    he   rests   his   elbow   on   the   counter,   chin   resting   in   the   palm   of   his   free   hand.   there   was   so   much   that   happened,   so   many   new   things   he   saw,   so   many   things   he   wanted   to   share   with   the   very   person   in   front   of   him.   all   that   stood   in   their   way   was   the   rest   of   his   shift.    “   gosh,   i   missed   you.   i   missed   you   so   much.   i   can’t   wait   until   you’re   off   your   break   so   i   can   greet   you   properly,   bug.   how   much   longer   do   i   have   to   wait?   should   i   buy   a   coffee   and   pretend   to   write   something   while   i   actually   just   stare   and   wish   i   was   watching   you   make   lasagna   instead?   ”

“   it   kind   of   has   to.   ”   he   still   can’t   believe   she   convinced   him   to   come   ——   for   once,   he’s   not   the   chatty   one.   and   yet,   even   if   she’s   annoying   him,   she’d   still   kind   of   cute.   he   motions   for   her   to   follow   him,   flashlight   guiding   them   through   the   dark   forest.    “   see?   if   my   mind   didn’t   work   the   way   it   did,   i   wouldn’t   have   noticed   that   nest.   it   looks   like   a   normal   nest   by   all   accounts,   but   i   can   see   that   there’s   little   bones   on   the   ground   under   it.   i   think   our   evil   bird   lives   here.   ”

IT’S   NICE   TO   MEET   A   MAN   WHO   SEEMED   TO   TREAT   HER   FRIEND   WELL   ,   taking   his   hand   in   hers   as   she   shakes   with   a   smile.   this   is   the   first   time   she’s   ever   met   a   boyfriend   of   mason’s   before   &   it’s   barely   been   a   few   minutes   &   already   she   has   her   approval.   perhaps   the   mutual   love   of   traveling   does   sway   her   decision   just   a   little   bit.   ❝   yes   ,   i’ve   read   your   blog   ,   ❞   hannah   admits.   ❝   seems   like   you   get   into   more   adventurous   sort   of   trouble   than   i   do.   you’re   like   ,   a   modern   paranormal   indiana   jones   ,   only   nerdier.   ❞   she   laughs.   ❝   &   i   mean   that   as   a   compliment.   ❞

there’s   a   bit   of   embarrassment   that   comes   with   knowing   she’s   read   his   things   ——   he’s   met   fans   before,   but   the   fans   had   never   been   his   boyfriend’s   best   friend.    “   well,   i   take   it   as   a   compliment.   ”    atticus   beams,   arms   crossing   over   his   chest.    “   he’s   kind   of   an   inspiration.   even   if   he’s   not   real.   ”    then   again,   everything   he   spent   his   time   investigating   was   supposed   to   be   fake   too.    “   really,   i’m   so   happy   to   meet   you.   do   you   have   time   to   grab   a   bite   to   eat   with   me?   ”

“   why   wouldn’t   i?   ”    thumb   runs   over   her   face   on   the   picture   in   his   hand   ——   she’s   smiling   in   the   picture.   laughing,   even.   he   remembers   when   he   took   it   ——   he’d   told   a   dirty   joke   to   make   her   smile.   the   result?   this   picture   he   started   to   carry   around   in   his   wallet.   the   edges   were   worn,   a   result   of   him   pulling   it   out   more   times   than   he   could   count   on   his   travels   to   look   at   the   face   of   the   woman   he   loves.   to   look   at   it   during   the   moments   he   wished   he   was   in   her   arms,   or   the   moments   he   wished   he   could   kiss   her   or   the   moments   he   wished   he   could   hear   her   voice.   but   instead   of   telling   her   that,   he   slides   the   photo   back   in   his   wallet   and   grins   at   her.    “   maybe   i   just   like   to   look   at   my   pretty   girlfriend   while   i’m   out   in   the   field.   is   that   such   a   crime,   mols?   ”

“   i   always   talk.   that’s   what   you   like   about   me,   remember?   ”    his   hands   rest   on   mason’s   waist,   mason’s   arms   are   wrapped   around   his   neck.   their   neighbor   is   playing   something   slow   ——   something   perfect.   he   couldn’t   help   but   grab   the   other   man   and   start   swaying.   the   lights   were   dim,   the   ambience   was   perfect,   and   it   takes   everything   in   atticus   not   to   kiss   him.    “   can   i   tell   you   something,   bug?   i   was   thinking   about   it   on   my   trip   to   angola.   i   realized   i   .   .   .   like   being   here.   with   you   .   .   .   more   than   i   like   leaving.   i   was   never   like   that   before   .   .   .   god,   what   are   you   doing   to   me,   mason   greene?   ”    he   grins   and   leans   forward,   stealing   a   couple   kisses   before   pulling   back   while   pulling   his   boyfriend   closer.    “   okay,   i’ll   shut   up   now.   we   can   enjoy   the   moment.   ”

a.               DOWN   YOUR   SPINE,   there   is   something   so   primal   in   your   fear...   like   your   furthest   ancestors   a   million   years   ago   felt   that   exact   same   feeling,   in   the   exact   same   way.   it   happens   when   you   are   stupid   enough   to   watch   a   horror   movie   alone   at   night,   when   you   see   a   spider   on   your   bed,   when   you’re   alone   in   the   forest.   for   a   moment,   you   get   chills   deep   inside   you.   like   every   shadow   is   a   monster,   every   mirror   —   a   portal   to   a   nightmarish   dimension.   you   wonder   whether   our   ancestors   felt   like   this   when   they   walked   alone   in   a   world   they   couldn’t   understand...   we   haven’t   gone   a   very   long   way   since   then.   we   probably   never   will.   all   these   things   fascinate   you.
