        the present was poorly wrapped. it had been handled with clumsy fingers but with the utmost care. he had just never wanted to do it himself. he knew he could have asked for help from his father, but it was his and amanda’s gift and he wanted to be in charge of it. he knocked softly on the office door, having checked the other places for his mother and finding her nowhere. he peaked his head around the corner. he humbly offered up the gift into her hands with a bright smile on his features. “ happy mother’s day ! ” he chewed on his bottom lip. “ open it. ” in many ways giving a gift was also a gift to himself. he got to see her expression to their drawings. he bounced on his toes, “ well, go on ! ”

Penelope raises an eyebrow at her friend over her glass of lemonade that she has been sipping at. “I am not sure being asked by a gentleman to dance at a ball counts as a silly or stupid question, El,” she replies, her eyes sparkling with amusement. “I grant you, perhaps he should have known better than to think you would accept, but it is normally a pretty common question at a ball.” While it was rare for herselt to be asked to dance, Eloise was beautiful, and a Bridgerton to boot. In her mind, it was not surprising that gentlemen wanted to dance with her friend. 

     “ it’ll take that as a no then. you won’t come with me ? ” she said quietly. dani doesn’t dare look at the other for fear of breaking apart. “ even if we could be happier there - away from the ton’s watchful gaze. you wouldn’t - you wouldn’t even think of coming ? ” god there’s something desperate about her voice like she’s trying to find a reason to root for them despite the hurt she feels. 

         dani had only attended the ball at the behest of her mother. she disliked having to pretend to vie for suitors advances when she would be just as happy left alone. she had an easier time agreeing when she heard that at least a portion of the bridgerton clan would be in attendance. her eyes scanned over the ball room before landing on eloise. she made a beeline around the dancing couples in the center of the room before meeting her on the balcony. there was something sweet about the night air, calming almost. she nudged eloise with her shoulder. “ i’m surprised you’ve gotten away from obligatory introductions for the moment. ” dani smiled for a moment before adding, “ i only have a few moments before i’m sure my mother goes looking for me. ”
