This is Avery (I'm in there somewhere too, but stick to looking at the cute dog)! Avery was born on August 7th, 2018, she she's a little older than a year old! She is a yellow lab, and she's training really hard to be my service dog (: I made a blog for her to get our story out there.

My name is Amanda, I'm 21 years old. I've kept quiet about my mental illnesses for the most part, so most of my family didn't know what was really wrong with me--I think they just assumed I was the weird cousin. I've had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder for pretty much my entire life. It's gotten worse and worse as I've gotten older, and I've also developed Generalized Anxiety Disorder as well as Bipolar Disorder (these have all been diagnosed by several psychologists and two psychiatrists). I do go to therapy and take medication, but it's still a daily fight to keep going. My OCD is debilitating to the point where I cannot leave the house by myself--I need to be with someone or I end up having panic/anxiety attacks, which set me back in my attempts to take my life back from my anxieties. It constantly feels like one step forward, ten steps back. My Bipolar Disorder often makes me crave going out and doing things, except I'm simultaneously terrified of doing anything because of my OCD, so I'm just kind of at a standstill. I'm not able to do a LOT of the things that a 21 year old should be able to do on their own--I just panic. My Bipolar Disorder also causes me to become massively depressed with seemingly no cause. It is during these times and during panic attacks that I become a danger to myself. I frequently scratch at my arms and pull out my hair during episodes, even until I bleed. Avery is training to stop me from hurting myself, and to help me calm down sooner during episodes. She knows to interrupt me by pawing my hands and will get on top of me so that I am forced to pay attention to her rather than my anxiety. These are just a couple of things that Avery will do for me. She will be my lifeline. My constant exhaustion mixed with my medication makes it extremely difficult for me to wake up to my alarm and I am often late because of it. Avery is going to be trained to wake me up when my alarm goes off by pawing and nudging/licking me. She'll be trained to "block" for me in public or in crowded spaces so that I am able to have my space and feel protected so that I don't get overwhelmed. I cannot stress enough how much this pup is going to help me. I will be able to be more independent without panicking any time I'm not with a friend or family member, I will feel safer knowing that she will be there to protect me from other people coming too close (not in an aggressive way, just making space with her body between me and others) as well as from myself. Avery's training is $20,000. It's. A lot. She is absolutely worth it, but I'm struggling to come up with the rest without help. We have made the down payment, but we need to pay the rest by the time Avery is done with her training. She's estimated to get done sometime early next year.
