in all honesty, books had never been objects of particular interest to sabine. she liked stories best when they were the kind you told aloud — when the words tripped off your tongue, crackling and snappy and free, instead of laying about so lifelessly on the page. so it wasn't the shelves books that brought her back to the emerald nook so often, but rather, the presence of a woman who she greatly admired. ❝ listen, chérie, ❞ she began, idly turning the pages of a book of poems, and eyeing ingrid thoughtfully through mascara-thick lashes all the while. ❝ why don't you come out to the diamond room tonight? you work so hard, you deserve to enjoy yourself a little. i'll even dedicate a song to you. ❞

❛ i'm listening, i promise, ❜ sparing sabine a glance before she returns her attention to the inventory sheets she's trying to catalogue. lips pursing slightly as ingrid scrawls down a few numbers. she knows perfectly well that if she looks at sabine, she'll crumple at those doe-eyes and agree to whatever she wants.

while there's nothing that ingrid prefers quite like curled up somewhere with her nose buried in the pages and getting lost in far-off worlds she can only hope to find one day— the idea of going to the diamond room isn't so outlandish. especially when it means getting to hear the voice of an angel.

the only thing really making her hesitate is, well, sabine's husband... and as much as she adores sabine; the idea of running into gabriel is enough to already start giving her a headache.

ingrid has never been much for wine— or any liquor to be honest. it toys with her mind and makes it feel slow, her limbs thick and heavy, and leaves her with a terrible headache that takes root in her bones. and if she's to be quite frank, she finds the taste to be bitter and unpleasant.

which is why it is only at the encouragement of her few friends, as well as the unfortunate kind gesture of her boss giving her saturday night off, she finds herself at a wine-tasting of all things.

goblet in hand and fourth wine of the night, she still clings to the outskirts and forces herself to swish what tastes like sour garlic around her mouth before the repugnant taste is too much and she's spitting it out in disgust. ❛ oh that can't be right, ❜ she mutters, wiping at her mouth with the back of her hand. ❛ surely that's not meant to taste like that .ᐣ ❜

" pardon me, " with a kind and gentle smile, she approached the first clerk she spotted at the emerald nook — a brunette beauty by the name of ingrid, if hana remembered correctly. a bit embarrassingly so, she had seen the older woman around prism falls her entire life but their paths had only crossed once or twice; the interactions always brief and surface - level. " sorry to bother you, miss ingrid, but i was wondering if the store carried sketchbooks, or anything akin ? if so, could you point me in the right direction ? "

❛ yes .ᐣ ❜ ingrid turns away from where she'd been shelving the newest arrivals; warmth growing in her eyes as she recognises the stranger's face. even as far removed from society as ingrid typically is— preferring to keep her nose in her books; she still knows enough to recognize the prized daughter of the keats.

❛ you're no bother at all, ❜ she seeks to reassure hana, offering her a soft smile and beckons for her to follow as ingrid begins to head down the aisles. ❛ we do have a couple, though i'm afraid the options are rather limited just because no one buys them. though if you can't find what you're looking for, i'm sure we can order them for you. ❜

he'd searched the window before entering the shop, but hadn't actually seen a sign about it. the small stack of books he carried had been tied up together with some string, and they swung gingerly as he approached the counter and set them down. "i had heard your shop buys books, any books?" he asked with an arched brow as he pushed the stack toward the clerk.

freddie wasn't exactly aware of their worth, but he knew they did have some. they'd belonged to his father at one point and had been a gift after graduating university, but he had no use for them now. nor had he any use then. but he hoped perhaps there was someone in the valley who might find more value in them than he had—or whatever she might upon appraisal.

one of the best, and most dangerous, things about working at a bookshop was it gave ingrid ample time to browse for her next few dozen books. and maybe sneak in some light reading. which is precisely what she's doing when she hears the little chime of the bell signalling someone's entered the shop. ever so carefully she tucks a bookmark into her place before she's sliding behind the counter and greeting freddie with a grin.

❛ you heard mostly right. it depends on the books. ❜ ingrid corrects, trying to hide the eager gleam in her eyes. her head turning slightly to glimpse the titles on the spine.

❛ these look practically new. may i ask why you're getting rid of them .ᐣ ❜
