" it won't? and what will suffice for this winter? " she asked curiously, taking notice of the matter-of-fact tone his voice held. at his question, though, hers was completely forgotten and the blonde's cheeks flushed pink. " oh, many a times. " roselie admitted with a sigh. " i'm afraid i am a far cry from what my mother would consider a model daughter, one can only . . . fall ill so many times at a social before people start to whisper. "
she didn't notice when he stopped behind her, continuing to walk in front of him and grab onto the white-painted wrought iron handle of the greenhouse. before pulling it open, she turned to look behind โ about to make another comment, before she noticed how far he was; and how he was looking at her. no one had ever looked at her like that before. gods, he made breaking her mother's rules so easy when he looked at her like that.
" freddie? what is it? " the beauty asked with a soft laugh, " is my dress dirtied? gosh, i tried to be careful at the shop today! " she fussed, her hand coming down to brush the imaginary dirt off her skirt.
"no," he reaffirmed with a shake of his head as his face scrunched up as though he'd thought of something entirely unpleasant. but his tender smile returned only seconds later, and he continued to explain just why. "i do think this winter will bring us many storms, but those storms also bring the fun," he explained with a giddy smile as he relived what it had felt like in those fleeting moments of youth. "i once built an entire tower out of snow to defend." freddie told her as a proud grin stretched across his face.
freddie cocked his head to the side slightly as he considered exactly what her comment meant and why she'd said it in such a way. "fall ill?" he echoed softly. "you mean like swooning due to the heat?" he asked with a breathy, uncomfortable sort of laugh as he tried to brush the worst of his assumptions aside.
he waved a hand dismissively, not having meant to worry her or make her question her own appearance. "no, nothing of the sort!" freddie exclaimed, eager to reassure her as he closed the distance between them with only a few strides. "in fact, i don't believe i've ever met anyone who could even hold a candle to you."

freddie wasn't convinced he was actually going to buy anything, but he decided to take part in the wine tasting all the same. he was curious about what the village vine had to offer, as he'd made no attempt to get over there himself. he was by no means a connoisseur, but he could appreciate a glass of the good stuff. but the man didn't quite see the point of buying any for the coming holidays, not if he didn't have anyone to spend it with.
he took another small sip of the liquid in his class and let out a small sigh. "this one is almost worth the price," he said with a small laugh to the woman who'd been standing beside him.

he'd searched the window before entering the shop, but hadn't actually seen a sign about it. the small stack of books he carried had been tied up together with some string, and they swung gingerly as he approached the counter and set them down. "i had heard your shop buys books, any books?" he asked with an arched brow as he pushed the stack toward the clerk.
freddie wasn't exactly aware of their worth, but he knew they did have some. they'd belonged to his father at one point and had been a gift after graduating university, but he had no use for them now. nor had he any use then. but he hoped perhaps there was someone in the valley who might find more value in them than he hadโor whatever she might upon appraisal.

freddie was tired. it had been a long day, and he wanted nothing more than to lie down on something comfortable and sleep. preferably by a warm fire. but he had responsibilities and someone else in his life that needed to be cared for before he could do any of that. his german shepherd roamed further ahead of him with his nose pressed firmly to the ground as he searched for the perfect spot. their game of fetch had lasted longer than he initially planned, and despite the rapidly fading daylight, freddie couldn't bring himself to rush the dog along.
he'd never been all that concerned about tethering him in the past, and the canine had been trained to come whenever he was called, but for the first time, frederic was concerned. he watched as his four-legged companion bared his teeth and growled at a passing stranger. a moment passed before he realized what had truly occurred, and freddie called the dog to his side urgently. "i'm terribly sorry about that, moose doesn't usually spook quite that easily," he explained as he rubbed the top of the shepherd's head to help calm him. in truth, moose didn't spook at all and freddie couldn't think of a reason why he might have reacted so.

"or how about this thing?" he asked, holding up a yet another peculiar metal contraption that he'd never be able to place a use for. "i got to be honest, kid," he said, dropping it back on the shelf with a loud thud. "i'm not really sure what you're looking for here." freddie informed with another glance around the shop. his knowledge about metals was minimal, mostly just which might melt the fastest, and surely that no better than hers. but he was always happy to at least try and be helpful.
"it's only sand, you know," freddie said with an awkward laugh as he approached an altogether curious scene on the outskirts of the neighborhood. after moving to the town, he'd taken it upon himself to start regularly checking the brigade buckets located throughout the districts. he'd been shocked and left unsettled upon discovering it wasn't something that was already being done. and he couldn't help but be glad he continued to do so, given it seemed some in the valley preferred to use the emergency fire equipment as their personal sandboxes, and he'd found them empty on numerous occasions.
"what are you trying to do anyway?" he asked as he closed the space between himself and the blonde, craning his neck forward to try and see what she'd been up to. "are you the one who keeps dumping these out?" freddie questioned her, unable to keep the accusation out of his tone entirely.
huayan always thought she stuck out like a sore thumb, whenever she'd find herself in a new town. perhaps that had been one of the reasons why she hadn't really remained for too long in either one of the cities she'd visited, prior to arriving to prism. she'd been here for three weeks and had made a few acquaintances ( too foreign still to be called bosom friends, but too well acquainted to be real strangers to each other ). it was a limbo of sorts, to be fair. wandering and fluttering over from connection to connection, finding herself tethered to this place without even knowing how or why. this wasn't home.
nothing felt like home, not really.
sitting in the corner of the tearoom, a sole figure occupying a table in a room full of vivacious chatter and jovial company. friends chatting with friends. she only had the headrests of the accompanying chairs to keep her company, until one of those familiar strangers fluttered in. yanyan smiled to freddie and shook her head, motioning with a hand for him to join her, should he wish to do so. "no, as you can see I am currently keeping the company of three useless chairs and the air around them." she softly chuckled, before adding, "you can sit here, if you want." she wasn't sure if he had friends at other tables and he merely required an extra chair or not.
he smiled and let out a little sigh of relief. "and here i was starting to think i would have to walk out in shame, shunned by the valley's elite," freddie explained dramatically with a chuckle as he moved to occupy the seat across from her.
"have you been here before today?" he asked curiously. "i've been meaning to come for some time, but it's just never worked out." though there was no one to blame for that except himself. there had been other opportunities to stop in, moments when the shop was far less crowded, but something else always seemed to come up. somethingโsomeone, who interested him far more than any tea could ever. "suppose i should ask what you have in here," freddie stated as he picked up the teapot and poured himself a cup. but in truth, he wasn't sure he'd even be able to tell the difference, no matter how bad he wanted to pretend he could.
"i promise," freddie began as he approached hana, waving a file over his head as if it were a white flag and he needed to surrender. "it's actually not my fault this time," he continued as he placed the thin file in front of her and opened it to reveal several overdue reports that should have been brought over long ago.
the man grinned sheepishly as he pushed them toward her across the counter with a single index finger. "found them while i was cleaning up chief's desk, and looking for an entirely unrelated report," freddie explained with a hollow sort of laugh. he might have found it funnier if this hadn't been the first time he'd been left to worry about things that weren't meant to be his concern.
"is the cost of backdating the reports when you file them still the same, or has it gone up?" he asked with a far more genuine laugh.
" well, as a small child, yes! " she corrected, " i remember being very young, five i think, and playing in the snow with my cousin. " roselie smiled at the faint memory, " but after that, i spent all my time inside. it's not terrible, i love to sit in the window seat and watch the snow fall. " something she was certain she'd spend much time this winter doing as well.
roselie laughed at his playful scoff, " i wish my mother was like the others in the valley's society, perhaps then i would have played in the snow. " she held her hands behind her back, her steps light and cheerful despite the sour topic. roselie knew why he assumed it was as simple as an overbearing mother in society, but . . she wasn't quite ready to tell him the truth. he treated her normally, which was all she wanted sometimes.
" well, i'd read, practice the violin, dancing . . . " the beauty mused, " when i got older, my mother made me start memorize things about the other affluential families in the valley, so i could seldom embarrass her at a social event by not knowing who someone was. " by the blonde's tone having taken on a sense of mockery, she clearly found the activity to be ridiculous.
he moved his head from side to side as he thought on what she said, thought on how it might feel to just sit inside all winter and simply watch the snow fall. and she was right, it was a beautiful sight to behold. still, there was nothing quite like watching it fall from outside. "hm, no," he finally told her with a firm shake of his head. "i don't think that will suffice for this winter," freddie informed her rather matter-of-factly.
"did you ever then?" he started, "embarrass her at a social event, i mean." freddie asked her with a sly smile and an all too charming look that he'd come to rely on heavily when probing for information he didn't exactly have any right to.
as the greenhouse came into view, the man paused for a moment on the path a few steps behind her, to take in the scene before him. one that had been played out better than he could have imagined. the pastel sky and setting sun created the most exquisite background for the perfectly poised young woman who made him want to hang the entire world on a string just for her. there was a voice somewhere in his mind that urged him to shake off these feelings, to not let them pull him in. that it would be silly for him to feel this way about a girl he didn't even know. but that voice was small and insignificant compared to hers.

Heathon, always the sore thumb, sticking up out of place in every single setting of his life, was no more uncomfortable than usual in the pristine and polished tea-rooms. You may ask yourself "What the devil is that man here for?" and honestly, Heathon could ask himself the same question as Isabelline's wasn't exactly his usual watering hole. In fact, Heathon was sure he'd never been inside an establishment so proper and if he had to guess, he was sure the only reason they let him in was because there was no one big enough to stop him. My money is just as good as anyone else's, he had declared loudly after being shown to a table and now.. well he was much too embarrassed and ashamed at his theatrics to leave whilst the pot was still hot.
The fine bone white, and floral teacup felt fragile as dust is his rough hands. Like one wrong move could send the entire building into an avalanche of broken dishes, crumbling into pieces right in front of him. It was like walking a mental tightrope, careful not to upset the woman, emasculate the men, and not to make a further fool of himself. Thankfully his Mother, had been graceful enough and patient to show Heathon how to dine with the upper class, even if he wasn't very good at it.
Gingerly the teacup was placed back onto the table without a single spill or clatter and Heathon had to stifle a sigh of relief. Not like any of the tables around him could hear. His attention turned to the sound of a mans voice, and he was certain they had arrived to escort him out, thankfully it was someone much more agreeable. "Take my seat, my table, my coin. It's all free." Heathon smiled, relaxing at the sight of Freddie. It must have been weeks since he first met the other man at the inn. "Even better if you join me. There's plenty of this" he glances at the pot in disgust "--watered down.. leaves to go around."
he hadn't quite expected to be turned away, not by him, unless of course he had been set to meet someone else. but freddie figured his new friend had probably made about as many as he had by this point, and they could both use some company.
he smiled and grabbed the back of the chair across from heathon and took it. "this one will do just fine," he replied with a broad smile, and he made himself comfortable in the chair he couldn't quite help but feel was a tad too small for him. though it paled in comparison to how his companion faired with the furnishings he could only really describe as danity. "not a tea drinker, i should take it?" he questioned with a chuckle and arched brow, as if to silently ask how he came to find himself in the tea shop.
freddie fixed himself a cup as he took a quick glance around the shop, really taking in the decor and the patrons that filled the room for the first time. "what a pair we must appear as," he mused aloud with a thunderous laugh and no concern for who it might disturb. he brought the cup of tea to his lips and took a sip, pleasantly surprised to find it still hot enough to his liking.

" it's getting colder out, " roselie complained, blue eyes glancing up at the trees around them โ all almost entirely devoid of their foliage. they were headed towards the greenhouse, where it was warmer and flowers were actually in bloom. roselie needed some inspiration for her next weeks' arrangements. " do you mind the cold? " she asked him, curious what he thought, " i think snow is beautiful, sparkling in the winter sun and all โ but i was never allowed out in it. "
"it's not so bad," he replied with the smallest of shrugs and a winsome smile. of course, it was no good if one wasn't prepared to be in it. but with the proper attire, there was no reason one couldn't have just as much fun outdoors in the winter as they could in the summer. "never?" he echoed in shock. "not even as a child to play?"
the man scoffed playfully as he looked her over. "society mothers really are a different breed here," he admitted to her, thinking aloud. he'd always thought his mother had been strict in her own way, but the more time he spent with her, the more he could see just how lucky he'd been. how incredibly free his childhood was. "what is it you were left indoors to do all winter?" he asked as they continued down the path, allowing her to lead the way. he'd only ever been there once before, with her, and he found himself all too happy to return if it meant he could keep her company a little longer.

freddie had to admit he felt out of place. he looked around the pristinely decorated shop for a moment, the fine porcelain china in the dainty hands of the most well-to-do ladies in town. the brown pants he wore had remnants of soot, which was clearly visible, and if one got close enough, they would surely smell the smoke that clung to him still. but all that aside, he couldn't resist the opportunity to stop in and try a cup. especially after the night he'd had. he'd heard from more than one person that the blends were unmatched, and it more than piqued his interest.
although tea had never been a beverage of choice in his youth, he had taken tea with his mother nearly every day while she was alive. after her passing, he came to develop an appreciation for it, even if he knew his taste buds would never be as refined as hers. he rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly as he searched for an empty table. freddie realized in that moment his mistake; all the ladies were here taking morning tea, and there appeared to be no room left for him.
he turned on his heels for the door without even bothering to greet the host at the stand, resigning to return another day when he hadn't been on shift. but as he did so, freddie saw a table in the corner beside a window surrounded by empty chairs. "excuse me, but are you expecting any guests?" he asked looking over his shoulder for a brief moment, happy to see the host still hadn't felt the need to bother with him. "or would you mind if i borrow one of your seats?"

frederic remembers a childhood filled with travel and adventure, and having had a railroad mogul as a father ensured those trips were pleasant and filled with unforgettably luxurious memories. except that was part of his problem. the memories he holds never quite seem to fit together exactly as they should, and it's been something that has plagued him.
perhaps on an intellectual level, the man has questions and concerns, things he wants to better understand. but on a physical level, he understands the important of enjoying life, having seen first hand just how fragile it can be. he was only fifteen when his mother died in a terrible accident caused by a derailed train. his inability to help her, to save her, still haunts him to this dayโjust one more thing for his list.
he'd never been able to recall exactly when, but freddie became a firefighter in his early twenties against his father's wishes. the blowout between them that followed forever altered their relationship, as the short life expectancy that was associated with his chosen line of work would directly interfere with his father's plans for the valois empire.
he wanted nothing more than to put some distance between him and his father, not abandon him or the business entirely, but simply to have some time for himself. to have a little time to make his own decisions. so when he saw a job listing for a firehouse lieutenant he was eager to jump on it. even if he'd never heard of the town before or hadn't the faintest idea where it was... it was an opportunity. one he'd never had before, and that was exciting for him.

โน his desire to help others can easily be misunderstood due to his meddlesomeness. he wants to help others, no matter the task, but he's not always the most smooth when it comes to his delivery. something he could use some help on
โน he doesn't always act the part of how he was raised. if one were to meet freddie and have no idea about his family, it would be an entirely fair assumption that he was nobody of truly high standing. he sure knows how to clean up and play the part of a high society gentleman, but he takes more pleasure being a nobody

โน ๐๐ข๐๐๐ฅ๐จ โ the circumstance of your first encounter with them left a terrible taste in your mouth and a sneaking suspicion they might have had something to do with that call you responded to. it was all around suspicious, after all.
