AVERY "AVA" BYERS
Age: 17 Pronouns: She/Her Sexuality: Bi Face Claim: Maika Monroe Status: Hawkins New Arrival / HalfâSister to Jonathan & Will Echo Status: Unaffected (for now) â but highly susceptible
OVERVIEW
Avery âAvaâ Byers grew up in Indianapolis with a mother who kept her past locked behind closed doors. Any question about Averyâs father was met with the same clipped answer: âHe was a mistake I donât want to repeat.â Avery learned not to push. She learned to survive quietly, to read moods, to stay small in a house full of unspoken tension.
Everything changed when her mother was hospitalized. While sorting through paperwork, Avery found the truth: Lonnie Byers. A name sheâd never heard. A Hawkins address. A trail of old childâsupport filings that painted a picture of a man who had never wanted to be found.
With nowhere else to go and a lifetime of abandonment pressing on her ribs, Avery took a bus to Hawkins. She arrived in early September 1986 with a duffel bag, a birth certificate, and a stubborn refusal to be discarded twice.
Sheâs not prepared for the grief in the Byers house. Sheâs not prepared for the tension Lonnie left behind. And sheâs definitely not prepared for the strange static in the air that seems to cling to her name.
FAMILY HISTORY
Averyâs mother, Marianne Hart, met Lonnie Byers during a brief, reckless period in her early twenties. Their relationship was short-lived and volatile, ending before Avery was born. Marianne left Hawkins without telling Lonnie she was pregnant, convinced he would be a destructive presence in their lives.
Avery grew up believing her father was simply âa mistake,â never knowing she had siblings in Hawkins. Marianne raised her alone, emotionally distant but fiercely protective, hiding the truth out of fear â fear of Lonnie, fear of Hawkins, and fear of the strange events she once witnessed but never spoke about.
When Marianne fell ill, the truth slipped out in fragments. Avery discovered:
Lonnie never knew she existed
The Byers family had been through unimaginable trauma
Hawkins was not a normal town
Joyce welcomed her with warmth. Jonathan drove to Indianapolis to bring her home. Will watched her with cautious hope. Lonnie reacted with anger, denial, and then possessiveness â a pattern Avery recognizes all too well.
She is a Byers by blood, but sheâs still learning what that means.
PERSONALITY
Core Traits:
Observant, quiet until sheâs not
Sharpâtongued when cornered
Loyal to a fault
Carries a constant fear of being unwanted
Brave in ways she doesnât recognize yet
A little haunted, even before the Echoes touch her
Avery blends into a room until she decides not to. Sheâs used to surviving on her own â reading people fast, keeping her guard up, and staying out of the way. But beneath that practiced quiet is a sharp mind and a stubborn streak she inherited from both parents.
She wants connection desperately, especially with Jonathan and Will, but sheâs terrified of taking up space or being a burden. Sheâs gentle, intuitive, and protective, especially of people who remind her of herself.
Sheâs braver than she thinks. She just hasnât had the chance to prove it yet.
CURRENT ARC
Avery is trying to build a life in Hawkins while navigating the emotional minefield of the Byers family.
Avery wants to belong â desperately â but sheâs terrified sheâll ruin everything just by being here.
Meanwhile, the Echoes have begun to ripple around her:
lights flicker when sheâs upset
dĂŠjĂ vu that feels like someone elseâs memories
a strange pull toward the rift she doesnât understand
Sheâs on the edge of something she canât name.
ECHO TIE
Avery is not yet Echoâtouched, but she is highly sensitive due to:
her proximity to Willâs trauma
the Byers familyâs entanglement with the Upside Down
something lingering in Lonnieâs past that brushed against the supernatural
Early Symptoms (subtle, deniable):
Static in her ears near the rift
Dreams that feel like someone elseâs
A sense of being watched from just behind her shoulder
Lights dimming when sheâs overwhelmed
Sheâs a perfect slowâburn case â someone who will unravel the longer she stays in Hawkins.
Arrival
Avery shows up at the Byersâ doorstep with a duffel bag and a birth certificate.
She enrolls at Hawkins High and becomes instant hallway gossip.
Emotional / Family
Jonathan catches her crying in the garage â an awkward, tender moment follows.
Will draws her unintentionally; she appears in the background of one of his sketches.
Joyce tries to help Avery settle in, reopening old wounds about Lonnie.
Echo / Supernatural
Avery experiences her first Echo distortion in the woods behind the school.
Lights flicker or dim around her when sheâs overwhelmed.
She feels a strange pull toward the rift â long before she knows what it is.
Averyâs Echo sensitivity isnât random.
Years ago, something from the Upside Down brushed against Lonnie â something that recognized the Byers bloodline and left a mark. That mark passed to Avery, dormant but waiting.
Sheâs not just connected to the Echoes. She might be a stabilizer⌠or a catalyst. A key to quieting the distortions â or making them worse.
Sheâs the Byers who wasnât supposed to exist. And the Upside Down has noticed.
