Connie ignored the weird feeling in her stomach when he wiped her face.
Behind him, she spotted Kelly Hudson behind him, staring at them. When she noticed Connie staring at her, she averted her gaze and continued talking to her friend.
"Kelly Hudson was totally staring at you," she said when he pulled away. "One girl down. Let's see how many more we can get, and then you can finally shut up about not finding any dates."
Steve's gaze briefly met Connie's, but before he had the chance to linger, he noticed her attention was elsewhere.
"That's an easy one—not that she's easy, just... never mind." He shook his head, not wanting to make himself seem like a bigger ass. He really should have asked Robin for advice before going on this date, but their schedules had been conflicting too much lately.
"You're not going to punch me if I hold your hand, are you?" He asked, half joking.
Jonathan couldn't stop the slight flush warming his face at the knowledge that Steve didn't actually mind hanging out more with him. "You're, uh, not too bad... either."
"Oh, um," Jonathan stood slowly and turned to Steve, about to extend a hand to help him to his feet but stopped himself. "That sounds nice. Yeah. Let's do that." He smiled softly, "Getting high make you hungry?"
"Good to know." He chuckled at the irony of the situation.
If Nancy could see them now, she would probably ask if either of them had been hit in the head. Their stupid feud seemed like ancient history.
"Uh, yeah. I blame the smoke, so I'm really blaming you," he joked, pushing himself up.
"Did you drive? I have my car parked nearby."
Honestly, Connie couldn't believe what she was doing here. On a date. With Steve 'the Hair' Harrington. Her once sworn enemy.
She took the snow cone from his hand. It was covered in strawberry sauce (or whatever the fuck it's called). "Thanks, don't worry about strawberry is my favorite flavor," she said, taking a bite, and sighed, closing her eyes. "I swear I would totally go home with a living strawberry-flavored snow cone."
Some of it dripped down her chin.
"Great, cool." Steve chuckled, digging into his own green, lime flavored snow cone.
It was a weird feeling being on a date with Connie. Not because he didn't want to be, but just because he had never considered she would want to be on a date with him. Even if this was just to prove her theory right, he wanted to make sure she had a good time.
"You might be taking something home," he joked as he used a napkin to wipe her chin.
"Oh, yeah, totally," Jonathan laughed. But for a second he could see it—Steve showing up to the Wheeler house with flowers, the two going on a walk and talking just like this, not having to "act like a man" or put on a show... jokingly. Definitely.
"Can't walk home already? We haven't even gotten started," he shook his head, thinking of his secret stash. Argyle had made sure that when they left California, Jonathan would be stocked for a few months. But with how little he'd been using it, Jonathan guessed it might last a year.
"Well—I would do anything for food right now," he admitted. "And you're not bad company." He looked at Jonathan, silently trying to tell him, he wanted more of his company.
Steve wished he could say it openly, but in Hawkins, that was too big a risk.
"I can walk, but unless you have something in mind... I can pay for a late night burger or snacks?" He offered, too high to care if he seemed overly eager.

location: memorial parade for: @constanceelisee
the parade was so crowded, steve worried he would lose his date before it even started. thankfully, connie was easy to pick out in a crowd. with bright hair and dark clothing, she stood out in a way he hadn't noticed before. they had been working together for awhile, but so had he and robin.
the fact he had totally confess to robin in the past was a non factor as he held two fresh snow cones in his hands.
"excuse me," he spoke gently as he made his way through the crowd, finding his way back to connie.
"if you totally hate this flavor i will go back, but i hope you don't," he spoke jokingly, but he was serious about going back.
Jonathan could tell Steve was dodging the whole "sleeping" thing. But he didn't think that he should be the one to say something about it. He turned his gaze to the joint between Steve's fingers. He took it and studied it for a moment before taking one last drag and stamping it out.
"Well, this has been... nice. You got anywhere to be for the rest of the night, Harrington?"
Steve definitely needed to get a full night's sleep sometime soon, but after a recent incident with Lucas, it was proving to be more difficult by the day. "Why? You asking me out, Byers?" He joked. Usually, he would avoid jokes like that with his guy friends, but Jonathan was different from the jocks he used to hang out with. "I should head home, but I might be too high," he admitted, thinking about going to the twenty four hour diner nearby.
"I would love to go on a date with you, Steve," Connie said, with a smirk. Hey, she loved shocking people. And, she secretly thought to herself, it was about time he asked her out.
Steve was a little surprised she accepted, but he decided to go for it. "Cool, you doing anything for Memorial Day? There's a lot of fun stuff going on, so that might be better than a movie." They worked in a video store, so it felt too cliche to take her out to the movies.
"Puh-lease," Connie rolled her eyes. "I bet you're just imagining their disappointment because ever since you stopped being 'King Steve', you're super insecure since you were desirable playing a role in high school, when girls in reality like guys who are both attractive and sincere. Heck, remember Kelly Hudson? The brunette with green eyes was totally hot. She asked about you the other day, and looked disappointed that you still hadn't asked her out." Connie shook him by the shoulders. "If it bothers you so much, ask me out on a date, and we'll see how many girls get sad,"
Steve resisted laughing at the suggestion, not because he was against it, but because he was almost sure she just wanted a chance to reject him. "Fine. Do you want to go on a date with me, Connie?" He asked sincerely before he could convince himself not to.

Jonathan shrugged. "It's like... I don't know, like there's missing pieces everywhere. Or extra pieces. And it all doesn't fit right. Some things belong here, but others..." He took a long pause, then shook his head, laughing louder than he meant to. "Man, I am out of it. I should probably stop talking."
But looking over at the other man, he felt like he could—should—talk more. Talk for hours. "Maybe you should go to Hawkins General—they can probably, I don't know, give you something to help you sleep."
Now Steve was staring because, despite the jumbled words, he knew exactly what Jonathan was talking about. "That makes two of us because you're actually making sense." He laughed with him, nudging him teasingly.
"Sleep? Oh, yeah, I probably should..." he trailed off, wanting to say he preferred sleepless nights. They also meant dreamless nights.
"Anyways, looks like I'm about out." He held up the last remnants of the joint, offering it to the other since it was his to begin with.
"Maybe, let them go somewhere. It's easy. Just ask them out on another date. And be real. Girls love realistic guys. I'm sure there is THE girl out there waiting for you to make your move," Connie said, dramatically, pointing at him.
"Oh gee, I hadn't thought of that." He shook his head as he crossed his arms. "Believe it or not, my reputation doesn't do me any favors. I can be as real as I want with you or Robin. But I do that in front of other girls, and it's like I can see disappointment written all over their faces."
"No," Connie said. "I mean, I was in love with Nancy Wheeler at some point, but then again, who wasn't? You, Jon, I'm suspecting Robin had a crush on her, right now...I'm into a guy, unfortunately. Or forunately cause I actually have a chance at scoring a date. How about you? Any guy? Or are you still pining over Nancy, going on date after date? Or...is there something going on with Rory?"
"Uh, yeah, that's fair," he agreed quickly to hide his surprise. He wondered what Nancy would think of this information, but he knew it was not his place to say anything. "Rory? No... I mean, she's cool, and I'm not pining, but... I don't know. I'm just tired of dates that don't go anywhere," he admitted, remembering how Robin had chastised him for taking his luck with women for granted.
The way Steve laughed now made Lucas's blood run cold. Steve was looking at him and talking to him as if he hated him more than anything. But just moments ago, they'd been peacefully playing basketball together. Was this some kind of weird joke that Lucas just didn't get? Lucas grew more and more uneasy, shifting nervously from one foot to the other. One of his eyebrows rose as he looked over at Steve, confused and uncertain. "Is that supposed to be funny?" he asked with an awkward laugh.
Lucas scratched the back of his head while his eyebrows climbed even higher. "I don't think I get it..." he added apologetically. Had he somehow upset Steve all of a sudden? Or did he really just not understand his sense of humor? "Shouldn't we just keep playing basketball?" Lucas finally asked, trying to steer the conversation away from this uncomfortable situation. It was overwhelming him because he had absolutely no idea what was going on.
Steve's anger was only tempered by his confusion. Lucas was usually pretty on board with antagonizing him, the rare times they had crossed paths. This was different. The kid was genuinely remorseful and acting like they were just buddies playing a game. How could that be true?
A sharp pain suddenly caused Steve to clutch his head, but it was gone as quick as it had come.
"What..." Steve trailed off as the pain dissipated and he was blinking down at his shoes.
Eventually, he glanced up, looking at Lucas, who seemed off, and Steve had a feeling he was the reason.
"I think we should stop for now. I'm dehydrated or something." It was a lame excuse, but he was still making sense of what had just happened, and he didn't want to worry the younger boy even more.
"You're only saying I have good taste because I was into you at some point," Connie said, shuddering at the memory. "Can't believe I even was,"
"Ouch," he retorted, glancing at a person passing by the store to make sure they weren't about to come in. "Are there uh... any girls you're into right now?" He was mindful of the kids in the back and spoke softly.

One moment everything had still been completely normal and they’d just been out here training together and playing basketball. But then Steve’s behavior suddenly changed out of nowhere, for reasons Lucas couldn’t explain. The dark look Steve was giving him now made Lucas furrow his brow and pause mid-motion. What the hell was going on all of a sudden?
“Bad joke?” Lucas asked, visibly confused, gripping the basketball tightly instead of continuing to dribble or trying to get around Steve. “Is everything okay?” he asked then. “What’s wrong?” Of course, Lucas had absolutely no idea what was really behind Steve’s sudden strange behavior, and he still didn’t understand that Steve was suddenly angry with him.
Steve felt his hands clench into fists. Realistically, he knew that no good would come of trying to defend his sister's honor. He knew that his protection would only invoke further gossip, but he couldn't help but hate this kid for what he had done to her.
"Man..." he trailed off with a second of sardonic laughter. "If you don't know what's wrong, you're dumber than I thought, Sinclair. Or... you're trying to make a fool of me," he mused, convinced that Lucas was in the wrong.
After Lucas had that movie night with Steve recently, the two guys had gotten a little closer. And Steve had actually kept his promise to practice basketball with Lucas every now and then since then. Steve was an amazing coach and playing partner, so Lucas was always in the best mood whenever he got to be out on the basketball court with him.
By now, both of them were pretty sweaty. “Of course! Always!” Lucas shot back boldly, trying to dribble past Steve. He bounced the basketball around him, but Steve blocked him so well that Lucas’s shot ended up missing the hoop. “Shit!” Lucas cursed, watching the ball bounce off the backboard. He ran after it to catch it again. What he didn’t notice yet was that something in Steve’s posture suddenly changed…
Blocking the ball was muscle memory at this point, and that was the only reason Steve didn't suddenly freeze up. He let Sinclair chase after the ball, but he felt his jaw tense as he tried to understand why the hell he was playing basketball with him. "What's going on, Sinclair?" He finally asked, turning to face the other with a dark look on his face. "Is this some bad joke?" He asked again, figuring the kid must have interrupted his practice just to be an annoyance. He may not like him, but he thought the younger was too smart to willingly get anywhere near him.
