Summary: You just want to keep kissing your boyfriend, and Seungcheol pretends to suffer. (he does not!!)
part 2 || join my taglist
āBabe, seriouslyāā
āJust one more,ā you insist, leaning in before Seungcheol can finish his sentence. Your lips press against his in a quick, warm kiss, and you feel him sigh against your mouth.
āThatās what you said ten kisses ago,ā he mumbles as you pull away, his hands already resting on your waist.
You shrug, eyes twinkling. āYeah, and I meant it every time.ā
Seungcheol shakes his head, amusement flickering in his dark eyes. āYou have a problem.ā
āA you problem.ā
āMe?ā He laughs, tilting his head back. āIām literally sitting here, minding my own businessāā
āOh, please.ā You roll your eyes before leaning in again, catching his lips in another kiss, this one longer. His hands instinctively tighten around your waist, pulling you closer, and for a second, you think heās about to kiss you back properlyābut then he pulls away with an exaggerated groan.
āBaaaaabeāā he drawls, falling back onto the couch like heās being tortured.
āWhat?ā You blink innocently, hovering over him. āYou donāt like kissing me?ā
Seungcheol opens his mouth, probably to tease you, but then you poutābig, dramatic, bottom-lip-jutting-out pout. He pauses. You see the moment he falters, his eyes flickering to your lips before he exhales sharply.
āā¦Thatās not fair.ā
You grin. āI know.ā
You donāt wait for him to complain again before kissing him once more. Itās soft and slow this time, your hands sliding up to cup his face, thumbs brushing over his jawline. You feel the way his body relaxes under you, the way his fingers dig into your hips as he lets himself melt into it.
And just when he starts to tilt his head, deepening the kissā
You pull away.
Seungcheol lets out the biggest whine youāve ever heard, his grip on your waist tightening. āOh, come on.ā
You giggle. āWhat?ā
āThat was mean.ā
You feign innocence. āWhat was?ā
āYou know what.ā His eyes narrow, but thereās no real anger behind them, only a frustrated kind of fondness. āYou canāt just kiss me like that and then stop.ā
āLike what?ā You bat your lashes. āI was just giving you āone moreā like I said.ā
Seungcheol groans, dropping his head back against the couch. āI hate you.ā
āNo, you donāt.ā
āUnfortunately.ā
You gasp dramatically. āOh? Unfortunately?ā
Before you can roll off him in mock offense, he grabs you, flipping you onto your back in one smooth movement. His weight settles over you, pinning you down, and suddenly, heās the one smirking.
āWhere do you think youāre going?ā
Your breath catches slightly. āUhāā
āOh, now you have nothing to say?ā His voice drops slightly, teasing. āThatās cute.ā
You glare at him. āI hate you.ā
āNo, you donāt,ā he mimics your tone perfectly, grinning.
And then, before you can protest, he kisses you. Properly. Deep, warm, slow, like heās trying to make you forget about every other kiss before this.
When he finally pulls away, youāre breathless.
āā¦Okay, yeah,ā you admit, dazed. āMaybe that was a little better.ā
#author's note ... i love wonwoo so fucking much did i ever guys tell u that. anywho this one is for zanzan bc i got inspired when we watched the kode ep <//3 and big big biiiig shout out to my beloved @l3visbby for proofreading <3 love u mother
#summary ... you're a little jealous of wonwoo n kerias frienship<//3
#word count ... 986
pssst the fic is referencing this cute vid:( wonwoo looked so good in it btw like what the actual fuck. also keria is my height and i fainted when i saw them hug bye
the door opened with a soft click and then all you could hear was soft patting of wonwooās footsteps against the wooden floor.Ā
ābedroom?ā wonwoo called, trying to locate you.Ā
āyeaā you hummed back, loudly enough for him to hear you. scrolling down, you noticed another reel.Ā
the love of your life with a cute, gamer boy.Ā
puffing your cheeks, you decided to exit instagram as well and check if you had any mails or texts.Ā
wonwoo entered the room, a small crease between his brows.Ā
āis everything alright, darling?ā he asked, voice smooth as honey. which pissed you off even more. how dares he sound so attractive when youāre mad at him?Ā
āyesā you grunted a little too sulkily, drawing his attention.Ā
āoh really? because you didnāt run up to me once i entered the houseā wonwoo teased and walked up to the bed, stretching his arms. you lost the battle with yourself and watched him, biting the inside of your cheek. how could one look so good in a plain white t-shirt and jeans?Ā
āyeah, im fine. how was your day?ā you sighed and looked away once you saw he noticed your gaze. with a small smirk, he laid down next to you. the mattress dipped under his weight but that restored the balance ā it somehow felt empty when he wasnāt there before.Ā
āit was good. me and mingyu did a live⦠i talked to my new friend⦠we might play a bit todayā he answered, eyes tracing your face āoh, the video is out! did you see it?ā
you hated how excited he was. and how much you liked it. keria isā¦Ā
ācute. i liked itā you mumbled and turned his back to him, fighting a smile. this is ridiculous.Ā
but itās just not fair that wonwoo looked so handsome in that video and threw some flirty comments. he was so cocky in it tooā¦Ā
ācute? yeah, keria is so adorableā wonwoo chuckled and you looked at him through your arm, shooting him a glare āwhat? what is it?āĀ
ānothingā you grunted. wonwooās lips broke into a grin, finally figuring you out.Ā
āsomething is clearly wrong. come on, talk to meā he purred, his hand sneaking its way under your t-shirt.Ā
āyou looked good in the vidā grunting, you tried to surpass a smile. the warmth of his skin on yours sent shivers down your spine but your tried to remain calm. and not fold.Ā
you couldnāt control the huff that left your lips.Ā
āwe got along really well, i like his company. heās so sweetā wonwoo continued to tease you and apparently that did the trick.Ā
āif heās so sweet why donāt you date him, hm?ā murmuring, you tried to hide your face in the pillow. wonwooās fingers ghosting over your skin in a circular motion made you melt, making it impossible not to crack.
āoh?āĀ
āforget it. go play your stupid gamesā you scoffed and wanted to move further away from him but wonwoo was quicker. he pulled you closer, calloused hands resting on your hips.Ā
āare you, perhaps⦠and i might be wrong here⦠jealous?ā wonwooās cat-like adorned his features and you turned around, finally facing him. ebony eyes looking at you with amusement but also love, so much love, in them.
āyes, youāre wrongā you finally broke and cracked a smile, poking his buff chest. wonwoo tenderly grabbed your hand, placing it flat against his chest. his heartbeat softly drummed beneath your palm, making heat rise to your cheeks.
ācome on, you know i would neverā¦ā he started and you shook your head.Ā
āitās stupid and not that seriousā you whined, covering your face with your other hand āitās not the way you were⦠so flirty⦠and charmingā¦ā
āoh, prettyā wonwoo laughed wholeheartedly, the warm sound of his laughter bouncing off the walls of your shared bedroom.Ā
you leaned closer and hid your face in his chest, the smell of cologne filling your nostrils. his tender hands moved to the back of your neck, massaging it gently.Ā
āi made my angel jealous⦠by talking to my friend?ā wonwoo sighed dramatically and you could hear the smile blooming on his lips.Ā
āit wasnāt just talking! you were so flirtyā¦ā your voice was a bit muffled by the material of his t-shirt āor i just⦠donāt know. you were really something that day, you know? so what if iām a little jealous, i just donāt want to share you with the world⦠that muchāĀ
wonwooās heart skipped a beat and he observed how you raised your head up. eyes meeting his, cheeks dusted with pink. you were so cute like that⦠cuter than keria.Ā
ācan i make it up to you?ā he hummed, hands trailing to cup your face.Ā
āa kiss. and no flirting with others, even if itās a cute guyā you pouted and wonwoo leaned, capturing your soft lips in a sweet kiss.Ā
before you had a chance to deepen the kiss, he leaned away with a small frown.Ā
āi wish we could adopt himā you laughed, and a grin formed on wonwooās face.Ā
āiām afraid heās a little too old for thatā¦'' hiding his face in your hair, you decided to wrap your arms around his waist.Ā
āheās 21⦠still a babyā¦ā you huffed and shortly after, the sound of your laughs mixed in harmony. you guessed you might forgive him, it wasnāt really serious in the first place.Ā

winter falls masterlist.
i.Ā
āI canāt believe youāre making me do this.ā
āShh, daddy smile.ā
Soft murmurs linger just beyond your door, elusive words that could easily be dismissed as figments of your imagination. However, any doubt in your mind dissipates with three resounding knocks, jolting you from your momentary contemplation.Ā
A reluctant groan escapes you as you glance down at your attireāa loosely hanging oversized hoodie, a testament to the numerous times it has been tugged down, and a pair of pajama pants whose matching top has mysteriously vanished. Clearly, you don't feel presentable enough to welcome anyone at this late hour. So, you remain motionless, futilely lowering the TV volume in hopes that whoever's behind the door will just continue with their night. But the knocks persist against your wish, so, with a resigned sigh, you rise from your seat, your blanket cascading to the ground in a soft descent.
āWhatāā the words dissolve in your mouth like a sweet nectar as you open the door, your eyes beholding no one in your periphery. A slight tug at your pants draws your attention downward, only to find the most adorable child your eyes have ever laid on. She's clad in Rapunzel-themed pajamas, wolf slippers bumping into your plain ones, and, to your surprise, a whisk cradled in her small hand.Ā
āHey there,ā your voice softens as you crouch to meet her warm gaze. You find an innocent happiness gleaming in her eyes, a radiant spark shining even beneath the corridor's muted light. Two dimples adorn her cheeks as she smiles at you.Ā
āHi, my dad wants to tell you something,ā she says, pointing with her whisk to the very end of the hallway. You crane your neck, trying to catch a glimpse of the elusive figure.Ā
āYour dad?ā
āMm. Heās a bit shy, thatās why heās hiding,ā she confides in a whisper. But, despite her earnest attempt, her words still resound loudly in the vacant space, causing giggles to spill out of your mouth.Ā
āAnd you arenāt shy?ā you inquire, tilting your head.Ā
āNu-uh,ā she shakes her head with conviction as someone emerges behind her. She instinctively wraps an arm around their leg, nestling her cheek against their thigh.Ā
She isn't shy because she feels protected.
You rise from your place, eyes locking with a familiar shade of brown. Only these hold a mesmerizing quality to them making your very breath catch in your throat. Kindness pours from his gaze as it travels down your face, a sentiment that further materializes as delicate smile lines stitch around the corner of his eyes.Ā Ā
Heās beautiful.Ā
Your eyes trail down to two pairs of dimples, mirroring the ones of his daughter perfectly. She is his living portrait, sharing his eyes, lips, and smile. Yet, his cheeks blush in a hue she does not possess, while his left hand fiddles with his earlobe, in an unspoken, timid gesture. For some odd reason, it pierces straight through your heart.
āSorry for bothering you,ā a smooth Australian accent rolls off his tongue, similar to rich butter spread on warm bread- it infuses your being with tingles pulsating from the base of your toes. You suddenly no longer miss your blanket.
āI'm your next-door neighbor. We were just making cookies and we realized we actuallyĀ donāt have flour,ā he explains, a bashful smile imprinted onto his lips.Ā
āYou didnāt check beforehand?ā you ask, laughter tinting your voice.Ā
āI forgot,ā he admits, but his tone sounds almost sad as if beating himself over it. A fleeting shadow veils his face briefly, dissipating like a passing cloud grazing the sun.
āCan we borrow some from you? I told Sowon that we could go to the store but she said itās too cold out,ā he asks, his hand resting on his daughterās shoulder soothingly.Ā
āIt is too cold out,ā you agree with a frown, looking down at Sowon to which she smiles brightly, happy to have your support.Ā
āAnd of course, I'll bring you flour. Donāt worry about it. Do you want to come in meanwhile?ā
āIt's okay, we'll wait here. Donāt want to intrude.āĀ
āThank you!ā Sowon beams, her missing tooth in full display.Ā
āYeah, thank you so muchā¦ā he trails out, tilting his head as if to silently inquire about your name.
āYn. And you?ā
āChris.ā
āNice to meet you, Chris,ā you smile, shaking his extended hand. His fingers wrap around your palm, and it feels as if youāre grasping thunder, crackling with an electricity that your eyes canāt behold, yet your soul does, suddenly illuminated from within.Ā
Your smile grows as you detach yourself from his hold, before bending forward to bop Sowonās nose. āAnd nice to meet you too Rapunzel.āĀ
Your words make her hide behind her fatherās leg, peeking out slightly to look at you.Ā
āSee I'm not the only one who gets shy,ā Chan chuckles, and Sowon whines in complaint, further burying her face in her dadās grey sweatpants.Ā
Adorable, so much it stirs a long-forgotten melancholy within your being.Ā
āShe gets a pass, she's still young, right Sowon?ā
āAre you calling me old then?ā Chan fakes outrage, bringing one hand to his chest while the other cradles Sowonās back.Ā
āOld enough to forget about flour,ā you wink and he laughs, looking down at your slippers.Ā
A few minutes go by before you come back, a recipient full of flour in your hands. The sight before you makes you pause in your tracksā Chris, leaning against the wall, Sowon propped on his hip, her arms loosely hanging around his neck, her eyes closed.Ā
āDid sheā¦ā you whisper and he turns to you.Ā
āYeah, fell asleep,ā he smiles fondly, tucking a few strands of her hair behind the curve of her ear. āSheāll be disappointed when she wakes up to no cookies. She wanted us to have a baking holiday tradition.ā
āYou donāt know how to make them?āĀ
āNo, I was counting on a six-year-old to assist me,ā he chuckles quietly, prompting a snort from you.Ā
āWell, keep the flour, in case you need it again.āĀ
āThank you, Yn,ā he grins, the smile taking over his entire face, grabbing the recipient from you.Ā
āYouāre welcome Chris,ā you say, as you both linger around the door still, not making any attempt to move.Ā
Your eyes refuse to peel away from his, as if there were a magnetic force drawing you to him, telling you that your gaze belonged to rest on him.
āUhm,ā he clears his throat, leaning away from the wall. āI'll get going.ā
āYeah, sleep well, Chris.ā
āThank you,ā he smiles before turning around.Ā
An idea brews in your head, a germ sprouted by the clear adoration in which Sowon gazed at her dad, and the disappointment in his face as he said he would no longer be making cookies. Had you wished to dig a little deeper, you wouldāve also found a long-buried feeling of a little girl who would have loved holiday traditions as well. You close the door before heading straight to your kitchen.Ā
One hour laterĀ
You knock softly on Chrisā door, fidgeting from one foot to another. You almost retract back to your apartment after your fourth knock, when the door finally opens, Chris coming into your line of sight.Ā
āHi,ā you greet, hands behind your back.Ā
āHey,ā he smiles, leaning his arm on the doorway, right above your head. He tilts his head to the side, silently wondering what you want. The words dissolve in your mouth at the way his eyes fixate on you as if trying to peer behind your irises onto your mind.Ā
āCookies,ā you bring the plate before him, as his eyes grow wide, an incredulous smile drawn on his lips.Ā
āYou made them?āĀ
āYeah, didn't want Sowon to be disappointed,ā you shrug and his eyes grow wild, racking all over your face in disbelief.Ā
āYou didn't have to do this,ā he finally says, tone softening, syllables ringing like a sweet sonnet in your ears.Ā
āI know. I wanted to. and I'm a baker so making cookies comes easily to me, don't worry about it,ā you shrug sheepishly, biting your lower lip slightly. You felt scrutinized by him in ways you haven't felt before.Ā
āThank you, Yn, I donāt even know what to say,ā he says, his smile resembling a beam of light. A surge of pride courses through you at managing to bring it forth.Ā
āNo need to say anything. I hope I didn't wake you up,ā you smile sheepishly and he shakes his head.Ā
āNo, I- I was working in my studio and Sowon is asleep. It's just us two. Always has been,ā he adds, tone slightly changing, air growing heavier between you both. It's just them two.Ā
āStudio?ā you inquire, hoping to dispel the tension latching around you both.Ā
āI'm a music producer,ā he clarifies. āI made a studio here so I could stay the night with Sowon.āĀ
āI'm sure she appreciates that,ā you say as you hand the plate to him. His fingertips brush against your own, and a slight electricity courses through you at the touch, the hallway suddenly brighter from the fireworks ricocheting off of you both.
āIā¦. I'll get going.ā
āYeah, yeah, don't want to take more of your time.ā
āI'll see you around.āĀ
āYeah, I'll see you,ā he says, words not ringing carelessly into the air, sounding more like a promise. He'll see you, he'll make sure of it.Ā
ii.Ā
āCan you wait!ā a voice echoes near the building entrance, and you prevent the elevator doors from closing as hurried steps near you.Ā
You recognize the voice easily by the light tingles running down your spine, the Australian accent shooting straight through your heart. Its owner materializes, Chrisā leather jacket hugging his muscles snuggly, black t-shirt tucked into a pair of blue jeans, cap nestled on his head, rebellious strands of ebony hair peeking behind it.
You find the breath knocked out of you once again at his sight. He's beautiful, even more so in broad daylight, where every feature of his comes to life, beckoning, demanding your sole attention.Ā
āHey, Yn,ā he smiles in delight, uttering your name in a familiarity that infuses your being with warmth. Even though you've only talked once, two days ago.Ā
āHey, Chris,ā you greet back, pressing the fourth elevator button again. you face the mirror to find Chris already looking at you, his eyes instantly locking with yours.Ā
āThe cookies were good,ā he smiles softly and you grin. āI'm glad you think so.āĀ
āWhere is your bakery? I need to taste more of your baking.āĀ
The butterflies in your stomach tone down at his words, your attraction momentarily forgotten as gratitude coats your heart instead.
āI can text you the address?ā you propose.Ā
āYeah, here,ā he takes out his phone, a picture of him and Sowon set as his lock screenā their cheeks are pressed tightly to one another, messily done eyeliner on both their eyes. you giggle to yourself as you grab the device.
āCute picture,ā you muse and he brings an arm to his neck, scratching the side of it timidly.Ā
āShe insists on trying her makeup on me.āĀ
āShe makes you look better,ā you giggle and he rolls his eyes, tongue poking against his cheek.Ā
āShe wants to become a stylist,ā he explains, as the elevator doors open. He lets you out first, arm stretched forward.
āI find her passion really cute so I buy her anything she asks for,ā he shrugs and you chuckle, pointing to the bag of pink ribbons he is carrying.Ā
āLet me guess, she wants to use these on you?ā
āYeah. She also said that I quote āneed to learn new hairstyles because her friends always come to class with intricate braids, and she can't go to class with a simple one.āā He repeats, tone growing slightly high-pitched as he mimics his daughter's words. Yet, the fond smile on his face is louder, screaming of his love for her.Ā
āShe has you wrapped around your finger,ā you muse, leaning against your door. The keys in your bag are long forgotten.Ā
āShe can be very scary for such a little girl.āĀ
āWhat does she threaten you with?ā you ask, feigning horror.Ā
āNo goodnight kisses,ā he whispers, as if scared she'd hear him beyond the wooden door.Ā
āTorture,ā you gasp, placing your hand on his shoulder reassuringly. Yet, the smiles slip out of your face instantly. Was it normal for clothes to dissolve under your touch, layers of cotton and leather doing nothing to stop the warmth of his skin from seeping through you? Was it normal to be so affected by such an innocent touch?Ā
āUhm,ā you clear your throat, āI can help you. with her hair, I mean.āĀ
āYou don't have to. I already took too much from your time with the cookies,ā he seems truly apologetic, his tone sobering as if despising others doing things for him. You see yourself in him, in the way he wants to carry the worldās burden on his shoulders. It is a reflection you wish to mend.Ā
āI don't mind, I remember feeling jealous of the other girls in my school so I made myself learn all the braids.āĀ
And then you see his gratefulness, the twinkle in his eyes that you can only grasp for a millisecond before they disappear into moon crescents. Happiness looks grand on him, overtaking his entire face, brightening his features with a glow too ethereal to be of mankind, as if they were carved to translate joy. You find yourself willing to give up more of your time to see it.
āThank you,ā he breathes out and you nod, a grin taking over your face as well.Ā
āYouāre welcome. Let me just change my clothes.āĀ
āļøāź³ā¢ā
āAnd then, you pull the right strand all over to the middle one. Then you repeat, this way the ribbon is braided into the hair,ā you explain to a very concentrated Chris, his eyebrows furrowed as he follows your movements.Ā
āIt looks easy when you do it,ā he frowns and you giggle, handing the mirror to Sowon so she'd be able to look at her hair.Ā
āDo you like it,ā you ask, a tad apprehensive and she beams, dimples that almost swallow her chubby cheeks surging forth.Ā
āPretty!ā she exclaims and you giggle, bopping her nose. āYou are pretty.ā
āAnd you are pretty too. right, daddy?ā
You turn back to find Chris watching you, a smile so fond on his face that it renders your insides putty, coats your cheek in the palest shade of pink.
āVery much so,ā he says, tone quieter, his eyes never leaving yours.Ā
Sowon suddenly climbs on her dadās lap, star and moon stickers in hand. She places them all over his face, and he sits there diligently, arms wrapped around her midriff so she won't slip away. Every carefully placed sticker is punctuated by a soft gasp from him and a small giggle from her. You could feel the love radiating from both of them, a feeling so strong it made your heart twist in your chest.Ā
Were there red neon exits you werenāt aware of in your being? Ones through which love trickled away all these years ago? Were the spaces between your fingers carved to hold someoneās hand, or to make everything you've ever wanted slip from your grasp?
āWhat do you think?ā Sowon startles you and you force a smile on your face, willing the heaviness in your heart to dissipate. There were questions you'd never find the answers to, you had to make peace with that.
āI love it!ā you grin and Sowon nods, satisfied. You look down at your lap as Chris fixates his eyes on you, a worried crease growing between his eyebrows.Ā
āFun is over, you need to do your homework, Miss Bang,ā he scolds and you snort, as Sowon rolls her eyes slightly.Ā
āDid you just roll your eyes at me?ā he fakes offense and you giggle as Sowon huffs slightly. āDad, I told you I have no homework. I already did it with uncle Felix.āĀ
āOh, right,ā he deflates slightly before brightening up once again, āthen, you should put away all these hairbrushes and ribbons, okay?ā
āWill you watch a movie later with me?ā
āOf course, baby.ā
āOkay then,ā she grins, quickly standing up to start putting away her things. you smile, getting up your turn to leave. Chris understands and stands with you on cue.Ā
āYou can stay and watch the movie with us.ā
āIt's okay, I have some things to work on,ā you turn around, but then you feel his fingers wrapping around your wrist, stopping you in your tracks.Ā
āAre you okay?ā he asks, hand still burning straight through your skin, igniting a million nerve ends with a simple touch. You avoid his eyes, looking down at the ground. It seems to be response enough for him.Ā
āWeāre conditioned to say yes even when we arenāt, right?ā he speaks softly, his words travel through your veins in a rapid course against the current of your bloodā which one will reach your heart first and flood it?Ā
Your facade cracks. His voice wins.Ā
āSo, you don't have to reply now,ā his thumb swipes once across your pulse. āBut I'll be here if you ever wish to tell the truth.āĀ
iii.
Youāve grown exceptionally fond of Chris in the span of mere months, more than you would like to admit to yourself. It was an easy task, as natural as the current of a waterfall. Yet, you did not plan for it, for a new emotion to settle on top of your lungs, to make you more aware of your heart and how it beats, slightly faster, around Chris. But it happened serendipitously, against all odds, when he knocked on your door at 10 p.m. asking for salt.
āShould I start buying groceries for you?ā you joked, and it took Chris a millisecond longer to respond, his gaze wandering across your face, as if discovering the worldās eighth wonder, hidden in plain sight all these years.Ā
āFor my defense, I have a daughter that likes experimenting with cooking,ā he smiled, and you raised an eyebrow at him.Ā
āJust with salt?ā
āShe added four teaspoons of it in an omelet. Then forced me to eat it because I always tell her food shouldn't go to waste,ā he shudders at the memory and you chuckle loudly.Ā
Chris knocks on the doors of your heart, once.
It happened when you spotted a cockroach the size of your palm on your bedroom wall. You wouldāve killed it, you were going to, except it started flying towards you and you let out a loud shriek you didnāt know your vocal chords were capable of conjuring. So, you called Chris.Ā
āCan you please come over,ā you murmured, crouching near the entrance door, a pair of slippers in your hand.
āWhy are you whispering? are you okay?ā he sounded worried, and you heard the turning of a lock as he opened the door to his apartment. He didnāt ask questions, instantly coming to your aid. A sudden urge to weep filled your being at his gesture.Ā
āThere is a cockroach. a flying one,ā you precised, horror dripping from your tongue and his laugh flooded your ear, tiny squeaks that made your hold on the slipper grow limp.Ā
āI'm from Australia,ā he knocked on your door, and you stood up promptly. āI've seen worse,ā he said once you finally opened it, his eyes softening incredibly when they met yours.Ā
He did kill the cockroach, by spraying your insect repellent enough times to asphyxiate you too. āI don't think I can sleep in there tonight,ā you sighed, gulping down ice cold water, āwhy does it feel like we went through war?āĀ
āWe? You were behind my back all the time.ā
Ā āI was cheering you on, from afar. Spiritually.ā
Ā āI canāt believe a cockroach scares you this much.ā
Ā āYou literally screamed when it flied towards you too.ā
Ā āI didn't scream! I made a very manly, non-terrified sound.ā
Ā āMm, sure,ā you giggled, voice softening at the blushing of the tip of his ears. Chris didn't have to force the door down to your heart, you willingly opened it for him.Ā
And after that, it was a race to find the silliest excuses to see one another. Chris suddenly taking up an inkling for baking, you manifesting a newfound interest in music, Sowon needing her makeup done for a dance, Chris visiting you in your bakery, Sowon craving your cookies and you teaching her the recipe, Chris knocking on your door and you knocking on his. The same giddy smiles on your faces as you usher each other in. And it always, always ending with a movie night.Ā
āLet's watch Tangled,ā Sowon exclaims, clapping her hands excitedly.Ā
āBaby, we watched this movie for the pastā¦ā he looks at you for support. āThree,ā you whisper, a bashful smile on your face. āYeah, for the past three movie nights,ā he whines slightly.
āBut I love it,ā she says, her pout morphing into a huge grin. āAgain! Again! Again!ā
āFine,ā he concedes, mouthing āsave me,ā from afar to you. You giggle softly while Sowon cozies up to your side, your arm naturally draping across her body while her legs stretch atop Chrisā lap, naturally, as if having you both by her side was the way things have always been. The only reality sheās ever known.
It is a fleeting fifty minutes as the three of you watch the movie, Sowon reciting excitedly the lines that she seems to remember. But then the quiet is replaced by her soft snores, her body growing light against you.
āShe fell asleep,ā you whisper, tapping Chrisā shoulder to catch his attention. He tilts his head to the side, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips as his eyes land on his daughter.Ā
āI'm sorry you have to watch the same movie every time,ā he says apologetically and you shake your head.Ā
āI don't mind. Tangled is a good movie.āĀ
āAre you here just because of the movie?ā he smiles, dimples peeking through. The juxtaposition between the weight of his words and the soft expression on his face makes a buzzing warmth spread through you. Heās cold and hot, in and out, yours but not.Ā
āWhat do you want me to be here for?ā you throw back, squeezing his shoulder slightly.Ā
āThe company.ā
āI do find Sowon entertaining.ā
āJust her?ā he pouts and you giggle, tipping your head back.Ā
āAnd you too, I suppose, by extension.ā
āBy extension, mm,ā he hums, as he gathers Sowon in his arms, freeing her from your hold. āThen I guess I shouldn't come visit you in your bakery anymore. Since you only enjoy my presence by extension.ā
āSo sassy,ā you shout-whisper as you both walk to Sowon's bedroom, āI like your company too, idiot.āĀ
āYeah?ā he turns back to look at you, tone a tad bit too hopeful. He doesnāt care that he sounds eager for your approval, not when he feels as if he can only truly breathe when you're near.Ā
āYeah, Chris, I really do,ā you speak earnestly, and Chris bites his lower lip slightly, suddenly overwhelmed by the gentleness of your tone. Your eyes follow his action instantly.Ā
He lowers Sowon gently onto the bed and she stirs awake, blinking repeatedly at the both of you. āYn,ā she calls out quietly once her eyes land on yours and you kneel before her bed. Chris watches from the door entrance as Sowon cups her hand near your ear, before whispering something to you. He notices your body stiffening, your gaze fleeting to him before you relax, pressing a kiss to her cheek.Ā
He wishes he could freeze time, stitch this moment into his eyelids until it is the only thing he sees when he goes to sleep. Loneliness is too big of an enemy for one person to fight off, but it seems more harmless when you are near.Ā
Chris sees you right here, every night, not forcing your place into his family, but falling seamlessly into place. Perhaps you were the missing piece thatāll soothe the burn in his heart. Perhaps heād let you in, even as fear paralyzes his being at the mere thought of asking you to stay.Ā
One week later.Ā
You've grown used to the knocks on your door at ungodly hours of the night, Chris seeking your company each time you both fail to fall asleep. Except this time, there is a chilling premonition in your heart as you walk to your homeās entrance, anxiety coiling like a steel ball in your throat.Ā
"Whatās wrong?" you ask upon opening the door, locking eyes with Chris's bloodshot gaze.
āSowon,ā he heaves, tone laden with fear, so different from how he usually pronounces her name. The syllables pierce through your heart like an arrowhead dipped in alarm.Ā
"Sowon?" you question, peering behind him to his slightly ajar apartment door.
"Yes, she has a high fever, and it wonāt come down. I tried everything, and I-I donāt know what to do anymore. Sheās shaking, but I canātā" He trembles, his quivers akin to delicate chinaware on the precipice of an earthquake, poised to shatter at your feet. You'd plunge to the ground first, anything to soften his impending collapse.Ā Ā
āItās okay,ā you soothe, your voice soft as you grasp his wrist. āLetās go see her, okay?ā
āIt's her first time being this sick,ā he whispers, clearly distraught, one hand running through his freshly dyed blonde hair.Ā
āIt's okay. Donāt panic, it happens. Did you give her medicine?ā
āYes, a few minutes ago,ā he replies as you guide him towards her room.
āGood, it'll start working soon,ā you reassure, opening the door and crouching before Sowon.
āHey, Rapunzel," you coo softly, and Sowon attempts to muster a smile. Her cheeks flush, eyes dim like withered petals.
āHow are you feeling?ā you ask, pressing your hand to her feverish forehead. You cast a wary glance at Chan, who's anxiously biting his thumb.
āCold,ā she whispers, and you nod, peeling off her blanket. āI know you are, but you have a high fever. We need to let it cool down, okay?ā
āI-Iām shaking,ā Sowon sighs, lower lip protruding and trembling, both from the iciness clawing at her frail being, and the tears welling in her waterline, like a cup on the brink of overflowing.Ā
āShh, don't cry. It will pass, it's okay,ā you murmur soothingly, cradling her face on your lap, gently moving damp strands of her hair behind her ear.
"Chris, can you bring me a towel and a bowl with cold water?" you ask softly, and the man startles, painfully peeling his eyes away from his daughter, as if doing so would consign her to a dark fate.
"Sure. Sure," he repeats, scurrying out of the room.
Sowon buries her cheek in your thigh, small hands clinging tightly to yours. You tie her hair up into a loose bun as Chan hurriedly comes back, a bassinet in his hand.
"Thank you," you smile, as he kneels beside the bed, his hand resting on Someone's knee gently.
āHey sweetheart,ā he coos softly, and Sowon blinks at him, light spilling over her face.Ā
āHey daddy,ā she replies as you dip the towel into the water, before squeezing the fabric to remove any liquid excess.Ā
āYou're being so strong. I love you so much my pretty girl,ā he says, bringing her small hand to rest upon his cheek, bestowing a gentle kiss on her palm.Ā
The moment feels so intimate, so tender, that you almost feel like an intruder. You imagine this is what thorns on roses must feel like, so out of place amid delicate petals and stems.Ā
āI love you too,ā she grins, and you remain silent, diligently wiping her face and neck with the dampened towel. You soon lose track of the number of times you've repeated this motion, but Sowonās eyes are now closed and her body is no longer trembling.Ā
You rest your palm upon her forehead, a sigh of relief escaping your body as you realize that her fever has gone down noticeably- the medicine finally taking effect.
āIt's better now,ā you smile reassuringly and Chrisās eyes widen, irises shaking as he looks back to his daughter.Ā
āWill she be okay?āĀ
āShe will be. She just needs to sleep a bit.āĀ
āOkay, thank you.āĀ
āCan we prepare her something to eat meanwhile?āĀ
āMm,ā he absentmindedly nods, his fingers trailing down Sowonās features delicately, resting upon her round cheeks.Ā
"She looks just like you," you softly smile.
"I know," he admits, not with pride but in surrender, as if his reflection was nothing but a cursed fate. His voice tastes like ocean water, salty, acid, suffocating.
āChrisā¦ā you trail off and he shakes his head, abruptly standing up.Ā
āLet's make her chicken noodle soup. She loves it,ā he says and you nod. A ticking bomb resides in his veins, devoid of a countdown, leaving you unsure of when he'll finally explode.Ā
You get your answer soon afterāit takes two minutes and thirty-three seconds for the first tear to roll down Chrisās cheek. You spot it as you retrieve carrots from the fridge, averting your gaze as Chan angrily wipes it away.
A few seconds later, five tears follow the same agonizing trail, and now the knife is shaking in Chrisās hands. He squeezes his eyes shut as if frustrated by his pain, by the emotions escaping through the cracks in his heart.
You stay silent, bringing the water to a simmer.
The clank of metal against the counter snaps your attention, and you see Chris with his head lowered down, his hands tightly clutching the counter.
Your tongue moves before you can order it to speak.Ā
"Chris," you call out, your hand finding its place on his back. An ugly sob escapes his lips, a raw cry unearthed from the depths of the soil where he buried his feelings, never allowing himself the grace of grieving, then moving on.Ā
āI'm a horrible father,ā he utters so brokenly as if this idea were cemented into his head, woven into every thought of himselfāan adjective that lingers like a phantom each time Sowon calls him dad.
āYou're not, what are you saying?ā you gently turn him around so he'd face you. But his eyes remain downcast, as if ashamed to meet your gaze.Ā
āI didn't know what to do. I panicked. I-I wasn't enough to help her.ā
āIt's okay, you can't know everything, you are trying your best-ā
āNo, no, no, it's not just about this!ā he snaps,Ā despair clinging to his eyes as he finally looks at you. āItās hard. Itās so hard to be here alone, and I- I try but it's not enough, I can't do everything and I'm not a good enough parent for her, there will a-always be something missing.āĀ
āYou're wrong,ā you say but he shakes his head in disagreement. āChris, you're wrong,ā you cradle his face, taking you both by surprise. Your thumb swipes gently underneath the skin of his eyes, wiping his cascading tears.Ā
āYou love Sowon. And she can feel it, she can see it, she can hear it. Everyone can. A parent can't be perfect, but they should love. And you love her.āĀ
āWhat if I can't even love her enough for a father? How will I ever fill the role of two parents?ā he's leaning onto your palm, hanging onto your every word. You'd sit for hours and untangle every thread of his mind if you have to, until you single out the infested one and burn it away.Ā
āShe loves you Chris. She looks at you as if you hang every star in the sky. As if you're responsible for every good thing that happens in our world. She loves you and you love her.ā
You gaze up at the ceiling, tears welling in your eyes. Chan notices the subtle tremble in your hand against his cheek.
āIf I had someone who loved me as much as you love Sowon when I was a child, I would've turned out so differently,ā you smile bitterly, swallowing down the lump in your throat.Ā
āYou won't be a perfect dad. You can't be. But she won't grow up with a throbbing heart, pulsating because of a void that cannot be filled. Her veins won't be poisoned by hate and abandonment. Because she knows what it's like to be loved,ā you pause, as your voice breaks, traitorous tears rolling down your cheeks. āTo be cared for.āĀ
Your eyes hold his in a silent conversation, secretly telling him what your tongue cannot speak ofā Sowon, an untarnished blossom, won't unfurl into a solitary flower the way you did.
āI'm sorry,ā he whispers after a while, eyes softening in understanding. His knuckles brush gently against your cheek.Ā
āWhy are you apologizing?āĀ
āSo you'd find a reason within you to forgive,ā he says, as he leans forward to press a tender kiss on your forehead. And somehow it feels more intimate than any way you've been touched before.Ā
Five days later.
chris [11:32 p.m.]: you up?
yn [11:32 p.m.]: i just got bad flashbacks to my college years
chris [11:33 p.m.]: ajaksjsbsbbs
chris [11:33 p.m.]: i didnāt mean it like that ć ć Ā
chris [11:33 p.m.]: wanna come over? i'm in the studio but im not feeling inspiredĀ
yn [11:34 p.m.]: and how will i help?Ā
chris [11:34 p.m.]: i find your presence inspiringĀ
You donāt reply, instead putting on your slippers and walking over to his apartment. He opens the door before you even have the chance to knock.Ā
āWhat are you working on?ā you ask once youāre settled atop his chair, spinning around slightly. He looks down at the pillow on his lap, lightly plucking its pink fur. āA song for Sowon,ā he admits softly and your eyes grow a little wide.Ā
āThat is so sweet,ā you pout, inching closer to him. āHow is it going?ā
āI've finished the melody and now I'm working on the lyrics. There is just.. so much i want to tell her, i'm unsure if ill be able to express it well.āĀ
āCan I read what you wrote?āĀ
āYeah. Yeah, sure,ā he searches through his papers. āHere.ā
May these words be the first to find your ears
The world is brighter than the sun now that you're here
I'll give you everything I have
I'll teach you everything I know
I promise I'll do better
I will soften every edge
I'll hold the world to its best
And I'll do better
Tears spring to your eyes unexpectedly, you try to stop their flow but they fall upon the paper, splattering like a broken mosaic, mimicking the brokenness of your own heart.Ā
āI'm sorry,ā you spin around, your back to him as you attempt to dry your tears, and yet they show no desire to stop. Chris is in your heart and heās kicking every other emotion out, forcing you to make amends with your sadness, the one you buried years, years ago.Ā
Chris gently grabs the back of the chair, pulling you back to him before spinning your chair once again until you are facing him. You bury your face in your hands and his rests reassuringly on your knee, squeezing it slightly. āIs it so bad it made you sob?āĀ
āShut up, you know this isnāt the case.āĀ
His hand delicately traces up your arm, gently lifting your fingers from your face. He kneels before you, his thumb tenderly wiping away the traces of tears on your cheeks.
āTalk to me?āĀ
āIt's so beautiful, so warm, so loving. Everything a parent should think of their child,ā a traitorous hiccup escapes your lips. āEverything my parents never felt for me.āĀ
Chrisā mouth morphs into a pout, eyebrows scrunching tightly. You shake your head, smoothing down the worried crease between his eyes.Ā
āI don't feel sad over things I can't control and I love myself enough now to compensate for what I didn't have, but sometimes-'' your voice breaks, Chanās hold on your hands tightens. āIt stings to remember what couldāve been.āĀ
Stings was an understatement, it is rather a pulsating void, throbbing in ache every day, calling out for its missing piece. How can I fill you with what was lost when it chose to walk away?Ā
āCome here,ā he whispers, coaxing you to your feet, his arms enveloping your body as he guides your head to the crook of his neck. His body runs warm, the material of his sweatshirt soft, and he smells nice too, the contours of his muscles tailor-made to complement the ridges of your own.Ā
āYou grew up well, Yn. You did well.ā
You clutch his shirt, tightening your grip as you fist the fabric in your palm. He's patting your back, and time slows down to match the rhythm of his touch.Ā
āLove can be hard, I know. Especially when the people who left are the ones supposed to be staying.āĀ
He understands, more than anyone you know. He missed out on a different kind of love too, two facets of the same coin.Ā
āYouāre doing well too, Chris. You shouldnāt doubt yourself as much,ā your arms trail up to encircle his neck, as his nose tickles your hair. You're the one hugging him now. āSowon is really smart, she told me that she loves you a lot. She can feel it. She sees everything you do for her.ā
āIs that what she told you that movie night?ā
āPartly,ā you whisper, and Chris leans away slightly, his warm palms still pressed to your waist, holding you close.Ā
āWhat else did she tell you?ā he asks, curiosity barely hidden in his tone.
You pause for a while, eyes going over the entire room before finally locking on him.
āShe thanked me, said that I make you smile more.ā You suck in a deep breath, gathering your courage. āDo I?āĀ
āThere are small lines that donāt show on my face until you're near.āĀ
āOh.ā That is the only coherent response you can formulate, and Chris giggles, a tiny squeak escaping his lips in a huff. āCute,ā he murmurs, planting a tender kiss on your temple. His lips linger, holding onto the moment a beat longer than necessary, causing your eyes to close in delight. Both of you find yourselves blushing as he leans away, a shared warmth coloring the space between you.
āSorry, didn't mean to make the mood somber,ā you say sheepishly as you sit back down, eyeing Chrisās laptop. āI wanna hear this,ā you quickly point to a random track on his screen before he can reply, hoping to make the sadness flee away.
āThis one? Itās not really good, let's listen to something else,ā his rambling and eagerness to change the track pique your curiosity and you quickly click on the song before he can stop you.
connected.mp3 starts playing.Ā
Sultry beats inundate your ears, weaving through your veins and whisking you away to the pulsating rhythm of a dance club. You knew Chris produced good music, yet you never fathomed that his voice could be so luxuriously rich, cascading over you like molten wax. You feel a blush rise to your cheeks at the suggestive lyrics, the innuendos peeking behind every word. And then, a sudden jealousy claws at your heart, at the thought of Chris hunched in his studio, fantasizing about connecting with someone who isnāt you.Ā
You wished to be the only one Chris liked.Ā
āItās a- a demo for one of my clients,ā he explains through a stutter once the song is done, and you nod meekly, willing your bodyās temperature to go down, for the possessivity crinkling in you to fizzle out.Ā
So, you put on your best taunting smirk.
āI know you want me donāt crumble.. No need to be desperate weāre just getting started,ā you sing-song back. āYou were feeling so cocky when you wrote this, right?ā you grin, inching your chair closer to his. āFeeling yourself, Mr. Bang?ā
He chuckles with a hint of annoyance, running his tongue along the expanse of his lower lip. Leaning back into his chair, he casually spreads his legs a bit wider, a gesture that suddenly leaves you feeling dizzy, on him.
āItās cute how affected you seem by it,ā he throws nonchalantly, crossing his arms before his chest.
āI'm not,ā you smile, although your erratic heartbeat spoke of a different tale, you just didn't need to voice it to him. āI think you were the one getting all hot and bothered in your studio,ā you stand between his legs, hovering over him as he leans back fully in his chair.Ā
āI was thinking of a pretty girl.ā
āYeah?ā
āMm,ā he suddenly grabs your waist, you feel like your entire body is ablaze. āThe prettiest.ā
"Who is she?" you exhale, teetering on the edge of crashing your lips onto his, like an incoherent love poem, hastily scrambled on a notebook in a fit of anger.
āyāā The door suddenly opens, Sowonās small frame standing by the door, sheās rubbing her eyes tiredly, her chick plushie dangling from her hand (a gift from her uncle Felix as she explained to you). You quickly scramble away from Chris as he clears his throat loudly.
āDaddy, I can't sleep,ā she says faintly, a tiny pout drawn on her lips, and you can see Chris physically melt at her words, at the way she paddles to his chair, and tries her best to climb up his legs. She fails to do so, so he quickly scopes her up his arms until sheās buried in his hold. Her small hands wound up around his neck, and he tenderly pats down her hair, his gaze never wavering from her frame.
āWant me to sing to you, sweetheart?ā
āYes,ā she whispers, before making grabby hands at you, your heart softens like clay dough as you scoot closer, enclosing her fingers in your hold.Ā
āSleep well, Sowonnie,ā you whisper.Ā
āCanāt you stay with us?ā she asks and you feel your blood freeze in your veins, your heart skipping three beats at once.
To stay. What a frightening concept. Even more scary when you realize that you arenāt opposed to it.Ā
You yearn to stay, for the first time in years, you wish you could.Ā
You swallow the growing lump in your throat, before smiling reassuringly. āI'll stay till you fall asleep.āĀ
Conditions, it is the way it has always been for you. staying till youāre no longer useful, staying till you're no longer wanted. Staying, but always with a time limit, always with an expiration date.Ā
iv.Ā
Youāre avoiding him.Ā
Chris knows you are, since you no longer come over to his house, claiming that youāre tired, or that you have an important order to bake for the next day. He would have believed you had he not seen you only once in the past three weeks.Ā
Those were excuses, and each one of them weighed heavily on Chrisā heart, on his home too, his studio particularly, the one that got used to the sound of your laugh.Ā
He misses you. He never thought heād miss someone again, craving you presence as if every breath leaving his body depended on you. He wasnāt a stranger to intimacy, fleeting hookups every now and then. Strangers invited him to their bed, knowing what they were signing up forā one night of pleasure, never to be seen again, their faces blurring into an indistinct mass in his mind, like an impressionist painting where no features stand out. Yet, with you, every detail is etched in his memory.Ā
He could pick you out of a crowded room, recognize the delicate curve of your neck, the fullness of your lips, and the way your nose scrunches when you smile.
He could draw the moles scattered on your body from memory alone, recognize your scent from miles awayā your cotton shampoo and the specific laundry detergent you love to use and a hint of vanilla that never truly leaves you.Ā
Heād remember the curve of your lashes and the cascading of your hair, the airy giggles you leave across like a trail for him to follow everywhere, and your eyesā the way they gazed at him, softening slightly around the edges, shining brightly as if crafted from stardust, the way they softened even more when you looked at Sowon, voice growing slightly high pitched as you listened to his daughterās rambles.
How did you manage to make his home yours without ever living in it?
āDad?ā Sowon calls out and he snaps his head up, locking eyes with his little girl. Sheās sitting on a high stool, munching on her pizza, a pensive look on her face.
āYes, sweetheart?ā he asks, walking over to her side.
āWhere is Ynnie?ā she asks in a small voice and he freezes, mulling over his response. He settles for the truth.
āI don't know, baby.ā
āDoes she not want to play with me anymore?ā Sowon whispers, and he doesnāt remember his daughter ever being this tentative about voicing a question.Ā
āNo!ā he's quick to reassure, cradling Sowonās face between his much larger hands. āOf course not baby she loves you a lot.ā
āOkayā¦ā she nods, a small pout drawn on her lips still. Chris senses his heart physically crack in his chest.
āDo you wanna work in the studio with me?ā he says in a joyful tone, and she instantly cheers up, the twinkle in her eyes found again. āYes!āĀ
āFinish your food first, okay Wonnie?āĀ
āOkay!āĀ
In Chris's life, regrets have been scarce, and certainly not in the form of Sowon, his beacon of hope, as he named her. Having her was beholding a sun wherever he went. However, a fear lingers, a whisper in his heart, suggesting that letting you go might be his one true regret.
So when his daughter falls asleep, he knocks on your door once again. He's suddenly transported into that cold night, months ago, where he asked you for flour. Had he known you were behind it he wouldāve knocked much sooner.Ā
āHi,ā you greet softly once you open the door. He takes a step forward, his wolf slippers matching with Sowonās bump into your plain ones. You avert your gaze, finding anything but him to fixate on.
āYou're avoiding me,ā he says matter-of-factly, voice soft, resigning to you.
āI'm not,ā you contradict, even as your eyes remain on the ground. He finds himself missing the color of your irises.
"Look at me, hm?" he implores, and you stay rooted in place. A soft sigh escapes him as he cradles your right cheek with his warm hand, his thumb gently sweeping across your cheekbone. "Yn, please, I want to look at you."
Maybe it is the pleading tone of his voice or the way his thumb tenderly grazes your skin, but something about Chris makes your resolve unravel, threads of fear unknotting before your eyes. So, you finally look at him. An exhale of relief escapes him.Ā
And then you speak.
āYou asked me if I was okay, and I didn't reply, back then,ā you say, leaning your head further against his palm as tears well up in your waterline. āDo you still want to know my answer?ā
āOf course, always.ā
āI'm happy. With you, with sowon. I feel this warmth that I have never known before when I'm with you. It was almost easy to forget I've known you during winter,ā you chuckle dryly, ābut it is all an illusion, I lie to myself thinking I could stay, I⦠I can't, I-ā
āWhat if I ask you to stay?ā he brings your hand to his heart, where it beats erratically, pulse seeping through your skin.
Heās as scared as you are.
āChrisā¦ā
āWhat if I told you, Yn, please stay with me,ā he breathes out, guiding your hand to gently cup his cheek. āWould you? Would you stay?ā
āI'm terrified,ā you whisper, as he tilts his head, bestowing a tender kiss on your palm.Ā
āI know, so am I. But, you make me believe that even my bruised parts are worthy of love.ā
He wins, before years of skeletons and piled up doubts, he wins.Ā
āOkay.ā
āOkay?ā
āI'm staying.ā
āYou are?ā
āI am,ā you giggle lightly and he staggers back, the sun pouring into his smile.Ā
āUm, wow, okay. Thank you for staying,ā his voice sounds airy, happiness floating in his tone, and you find it contagious, imprinting into your own.
āThank you for asking me to stay.ā
āYou made it less daunting,ā he pats your head, smoothing your hair down. āI missed you.ā
āI missed you too.ā
He giggles in response and you can't help but mirror the sound. āWhy are you so nervous?ā
āWhaaat? I'm not,ā his tone grows high-pitched and you roll your eyes amusedly.Ā
āWhat happened to connected Chris?āĀ
āHe is flustered by the girl he wrote about.ā
Your cheeks tint red as he places a hand above your head, caging you in place.Ā
āI think the girl should get paid for being the muse.ā
āOh yeah?ā he smirks, āI'll think about it.ā His grin softens, as a content expression washes over his face. You know you must look the same. āLet's talk more tomorrow, okay?ā
āOkay,ā you grin, before placing a chaste kiss on his cheek. āGood night, Chris.ā
āGood night, yn.ā
You quietly watch as he walks to his apartment door, his hand settling on the door knob. He pauses, for a few seconds where the air around you stills, before swiveling around and walking over to you again.Ā
you win.Ā
āI forgot something,ā he breathes out, before crashing his lips onto yours, furiously, as if needing to imprint his essence onto you, tainting your soul the way you have tainted him, permanently altering the composition of his being. His lips move on yours as if they've done this before, a dance they have rehearsed countless times, perhaps in all the dreams Chris visited you in. Yet, nothing compares to how it feels to have him touch you, lick your lower lip and drag his hand up your hips, press you against your apartment door, and nibble at your neck.Ā
Nothing could have prepared you for the passion he shows you, for how delicious it feels to be pressed against him, for the storm that your lips conjure, swirling in your heart in vibrant shades of red. Then, for the softness of his lips as they slow down their course, plump and rosy as they meet your own, tenderly, more gently, one kiss after the other. āMy hope,ā he whispers, as his lips find yours again, āmy missing piece.ā
Heās hot and cold, in yet seeking no out, finally yours.
bonus (one year later).Ā
āSo I brought the eggs, milk, sugar,ā Chris enumerates as he takes out the groceries, and you turn to look at Sowon to find her already gazing at you, a mischievous look on her face.Ā
āHow much do you wanna bet he forgot flour?ā you whisper and she giggles, burying her face in her hands to stifle her laugh.
āAnd⦠Wait, where is the flour?ā he trails off and you burst out laughing, as you and Sowon high-five each other excitedly.Ā
āDaddy, you are really bad at groceries.ā
āAm I?ā he smiles sheepishly, fiddling with his earlobe in a manner that still makes your heart melt, renders your insides butterflies speaking of Chrisā name.
āYes, itās good Mom bought it,ā she says naturally, looking down at her iPad. You and Chris freeze in your tracks, eyes instantly locking with one another, yours and his, glossy with emotion, a loving tide enveloping you both.Ā
It's her first time calling you mom.Ā
You swallow down the lump in your throat, crafted not by thorns but by petals, not by ache but with love, before placing your chin on the small of her shoulder, murmuring softly. "Mm, will you help me bake, baby?"
āYes! I wanna be a baker when I grow up, just like you.ā
āWhat happened to being a stylist?ā
āI can't be both?ā she frowns innocently.Ā
āYou can be anything you want, princess.ā you bop her nose and she giggles, pressing a sweet kiss to your cheek.Ā
In the grip of winter, Chris discovers a warmth that defies the season, casting off years of cold from the recesses of his bones. A soft smile graces his lips as he gazes at you, his hopes, his girls, the three of you clad in wolf slippers.
He's a bit lost and chaotic but he's the new boy next door that makes you feel less alone.

THE FIRST DAY
The rain dripped off of your clothes onto the grey carpet of the lobby. It had been a long day of work and by the looks of you, it was clear. You nearly dashed into the elevator to have some silence. But just as you were about to press the buttons to close the elevator doors, a man yells out.
āHold the elevator!ā The man is sprinting with a trolly full of neatly stacked boxes. You let out a sigh, making a quick decision to either be selfish or to let him on the lift. You stick your arm out between the closing doors and look up to the man who is now in front of you. As the doors reopen, you move off to the side to let him in.Ā
āThanks!ā He pants and pushes the trolly inside.Ā
āWhat floor?ā You ask after pushing your apartment floor number.Ā
āUmmm⦠I think 8? Floor 8?ā He mutters before taking out his phone to check. āYeah! Floor 8⦠Oh! You live on floor 8 too?ā
āYeahā
You didnāt want to further engage in any conversation, let alone, with a man. You just focused on your rain-soaked clothes until the elevator dinged. You motioned the man to go first and noticed that he was heading in the same direction of your place. The wheels of the trolly squeaked with every rotation. Please do not be my neighbor⦠You begged in your head.Ā
Yet of course, his trolly stops right across yours. You took out your keys and stuck them into the lock. His door opens back up before you can twist your keys.Ā
āSo, weāre neighbors, huh?! Nice to see youā
āLikewise. Have a good night. Try not to be noisy with that trollyā You smiled.Ā
āDonāt worry. That was the last of my stuff. Also, I-I didnāt get your name? Iām Jisungā
āY/nā You extended a hand out to him and gave it a firm shake. āDonāt be making too much noise tonightā
āYou got it. See you, neighbor!ā
A FEW DAYS LATER
You and Jisung hardly saw each other since. It seemed that he never left his place as you would leave in the morning and come back home at night. You didnāt ever bump into him again. However, every night, you did hear a lot of ruckus during the odd hours of the night. No matter how much you knocked on his door or left sticky notes, Jisung never changed his ways. But you couldnāt complain too much. It seemed that your new neighbor was an artist of some sort. Sounds of guitar chords, repetitions of lyrics and the bass boomed into your bedroom. Sure, it was a bit noisy but you felt less alone in the apartment of yours when you came home late from work. So eventually, you just let Jisung be.
That was until Jisung appeared at your door out of the blue.Ā
You sat there peacefully at your desk, finishing work from home. Your headphones were on and they were on full volume. Although you could barely hear your own thoughts because of your music, Jisungās voice pierced through it all.
āY/n? I need some help!ā He panics through the intercom. āI may or may not have messed up my lunch!ā
You shook your head and took off your headphones to check if it was your imagination. Afterall, he was a bit loud⦠Hearing the buzzing go off again, you finally decided to answer the boyās pleas by opening the door.
āOkay, okay⦠What is wrong?!ā
āI tried to microwave something that my mom made for me but then I saw sparks and a small fireā¦!ā
You rushed into your kitchen to grab your fire extinguisher and pushed Jisung out of the way as you walked into his place. The microwave was left open. A small feathery flame swayed back and forth over a paper covering of the food he had tried to heat up. You put the fire extinguisher down and blew it out with one breath. You took out the food (Which was salvageable despite the burn marks) and placed it on top of the microwave.Ā
āJisungā You couldāve just blown it outā
āI see⦠Sorry! I donāt do well in situations like thisā
āI understand. Just know that styrofoam, foil, certain ceramics and some paper do not go in the microwave. Please be careful and invest in a fire extinguisher while youāre at itāĀ
āWill do! Thank you, Y/nā
āYou know what⦠Keep the fire extinguisherāĀ
He bows perfectly to 90 degrees which you somewhat return. Closing your door behind you, you let out a small giggle. Was he really this stupid?
A FEW HOURS LATER
The intercom on your door rang into a melodic rhythm, calling for your attention for the second time today. You werenāt expecting any deliveries nor any guests so you were left to wonder who was ringing you. You stood up from your desk once more to see who it could be. Pressing the camera icon, you let out an exasperated sigh.Ā
Itās Jisungā¦again
Jisung was teetering on his feet with hands in his pockets. He looked nowhere at your camera but instead at the ceiling above. Without even having to ask, you knew he needed something.Ā
āJisung? Whatās up?ā You ask through the intercom.Ā
āOh! Hey, Y/n. I wanted to ask you about the washing machine that comes with our unit⦠To be honest, I donāt know how to turn it onā¦Itās embarrassing, Iām sorry.ā
You chuckle to yourself before you open the door. āIs it broken or you donāt know what an on button is?ā
āI know where it is but it doesnāt turn onā
Closing your door behind you, Jisung guides you into his place. A few hours ago, you were in his kitchen and saw that it was pretty empty. But now that youāre inside and passing by some of the rooms, you were shocked. The home is spotless and has an obvious blue color scheme. His bedroom was also quite cute with little plushies on his bed.Ā
āNice placeā You comment, stopping at the bathroom door with him.Ā
āYeah, my mom told me when I move out I should keep my home clean in case someone needs to come in and help me be an adultā
āOh shut upā Can she tell the future?āĀ
āIām not kidding. My mom was so worried that I would be in trouble on my own. And look at us right nowā
Jisung opens the door to his bathroom and motions to the washing machine. āSo whereās the on button?ā
āThe person who lived here before you had the same problem. But! Itās to the right⦠up top⦠and you gottaāā Banging your palm against the small button, the machine chimes. āāPunch it a couple of times to make it workā
āGoodness, if it means I have to do my laundry like this every week, my hands are going to match my furnitureā He visibly shudders at the thought. āThanks thoughā
You nod. āAnything else?āĀ
āUmmm⦠Oh! Iāve received your notes on my door.As you can tell, I make music. Iām not purposely trying to be loud, itās justā I feel more inspired at night. Sorry about thatā
Letting out a relieved sigh, you respond. āYouāre fine. If you sounded bad, it would be an actual issue. You sound pretty good and I like knowing that someone is next doorā
āOh-Thanks! Maybe you can stop by and listen to the finished product?ā
āSure. Buzz me if you need to anything elseā
āThanks, Y/nā
LATER THAT WEEK
Copy and paste from that day last week. The day ended with the clouds turning grey and growing thick. You left your work as soon as possible yet the rain came quicker. You walked into the lobby with drenched clothes that dripped onto the carpet and all the way into the hallways to your apartment.Ā
As soon as you walked in, you placed an order for chicken and pizza delivery before you washed up. When time came, your intercom buzzed rapidly. You slipped into comfy clothes and seeked the camera. Upon opening it, you stumble backwards seeing Jisung face filling it up, probably playing around with it.Ā
Pressing the button to project your voice, you panic. āJisung, what are you doing?!ā
He smiles and steps away from the door. āOh! I didnāt know if you could see meā
āI can!! Do you need something?āĀ
He purses his lips together then looks down at his hand. āI think your order came to my door?ā He lifts his arm and waves a bag in front of the camera. āDo you want it back?ā
The audacityā¦Ā
āYes, I want it backā
You watch Jisung through the camera. He puts his arm down and laughs. āSure, only if you give me someā
āWhat?!?ā
āIt smells good and Iām hungry. Whatād you order?ā
Your order dangles in front of you and you start to salivate at its contents. āUmm⦠Chicken and an āeverythingā pizza?ā Jisung groans and rubs his stomach with his empty hand. He looks at your food then to the camera with boba eyes.Ā
āDo you not eat?ā You groan, knowing what he is insinuating.Ā
āI doā He answers nonchalantly, straightening his posture.Ā
āEat your own food!?āĀ
āIāll treat you next time? Please?ā
This guy⦠āFine! Hurry up and come inside while it's still hotā
Your door chimes and he walks in slowly. You rip the bag from his hands to lay it out onto your dining table. Jisung awkwardly stands in the middle of the walkway as if he doesnāt know what to do. You motion him with your head to go sit at the table which he gladly obliges.Ā You walk back into your kitchen to bring over two plates, two cups and some napkins. Jisung murmurs a small āthank youā , taking one of each item from your hands.Ā
āWell, eat up. Guests firstā
The two of you ended up eating rather quietly despite these episodes of bantering throughout the time heās been here in your building. In the midst of finishing your own piece of pizza, you take a glance upwards to see if heās still eating. His cheeks are filled to the max, creating little balls on the side of his face. His gaze meets yours and the both of you laugh.Ā
āAre you enjoying that pizza?ā You giggle, covering your mouth with a hand. He takes another bite of his pizza and lets out a breath.
āDefinitely. Itās so good to eat like thisā He makes you laugh again as he shows off his chipmunk-like cheeks. The both of you look at the now empty table in front of you and shake your heads.Ā
āWe devoured thatā He expresses. āIām glad we ate thoughāĀ
āYup. Itās nice to have company for onceā
āI know right? My friends are still too busy to visit me but thank goodness that I have a nice neighborā He smiles, reaching close to you to grab a napkin. āSorry for being that neighbor thoughā
You offer him a half smile as a way of acceptance. āI get it. Youāre buying me another pizza and chicken as an apology anywaysā
He sticks out his pinky and you reach over to connect yours with his. āYou got it, Y/nā. He stood up from his seat, making sure to push in his chair and walked over to your front door. āI'll see myself out. Thank you again for having me on such weird notice. Iāll make sure to treat you to some food sometimeā.
He pulls the door open and begins to walk away with a small stride. You stand there in the door frame with a little smile on your face as he waves to you. The moment he closed his door, you shut yours. Your head abruptly hits the closed door while your cheeks begin to burn. Thereās something about him that makes you look forward to what heāll ask about tomorrow. Or maybe itās just seeing his face and hearing him talk foolishly. Regardless, youāve got a reason to get up early.Ā
As for Jisung, like a reflection across water, Jisung is also leaning his head against his door. He smiles sheepishly knowing that someone is waiting for him (And that pizza comboā¦)
