SOME OF YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN SUICIDAL AND IT SHOWS
oookay so i finally sat down and watched the odyssey; here are my thoughts:
it's a solid 7/10 movie. i think if i went into the movie without knowing what would happen, or if it was original and the idea of the odyssey didn't already exist, i would have liked it better. however, it IS an adaptation of a homeric epic, so that is what i'll compare it to.
first i'd like to say that the movie did odysseus dirty. he was shown to be a generic, morally upright hero who just wanted to go home. where's his selfishness?? the hubris that is the reason polyphemus knows who he is? and on top of that, they also removed the "nobody" scene, which i feel like is a massive part of odysseus' characterization. they completely changed this guy.
that aside, i also didn't really like the movie's version of what happened on aeaea with circe. i think circe could've looked younger since she's a goddess, no idea why she's depicted to look wayy older. also like why did she live in a dilapidated hut? i always kind of imagined her to live in a mansion with nymphs like how it's normally described. i was also kind of excited to see her whip out a magic wand and start hocus pocusing the men into pigs like in the book, but she kind of just? manually altered their features? aside from that though i think the horror of the men being turned into pigs was cool af.
the time skips were also kind of weird; i'm guessing nolan wanted everything that happened before calypso to be retold as odysseus' memories (although he didn't actually eat lotus in homer's odyssey). they definitely could have done better with calypso in the movie and her lore with odysseus as well.
additionally, like where is the representation of the gods? there's athena, but the rest are only mentioned. what about aeolus and the wind bag? hermes?? or literally any of the other gods? like what
i think scylla could've been scarier and explained more, because it kind of just looked like a massive octopus (or, well, hexapus) attacked the ship for ten seconds and then left without any explanation.
my favorite character in this adaption was definitely eumaeus. love that he's in the movie and not ignored like some other characters (cough, cough, nausicaa and arete)
i also just want to say that it's fucking hilarious how robert pattinson looks like he's gonna kiss tom holland whenever they talk in the movie lmao.
if you're still reading this thanks for listening to my yap, bye

when i try to talk to someone about the odyssey but all of their knowledge comes from the movie
Also people being obsessed with Greek mythology as kids wasnโt invented by Percy Jackson. My dad read the Iliad and the odyssey in high school because one of his friends was super obsessed with Ancient Greek lit and he was like โwell I canโt let him be smarter and more well read than I am Iโve gotta catch upโ
percy jackson only popularized greek mythology among younger generations due to its fame
Slander
nemo is odysseus i guess
i think itโs interesting how in epic the musical, odysseus was presented with the option to choose between his life and that of his crewโs, while in homerโs odyssey he didnโt have a choice.
this actually shows a lot about the differences in the characterization of odysseus. like in epic, this decision really highlights his selfishness in that he chose for his crew to die so that he could return to ithaca.
however, although he was undeniably proud in the odyssey as well, odysseus was also shown to care a lot for his crew (e.g. trying to keep them alive and mourning their deaths). i think if he was provided with the same choice, itโs more likely he would have sacrificed himself.
Donโt spoil the odyssey? Brother youโve had 3000 years to read it

the alternative ending nolan crafted for his 2026 adaptation of "the odyssey" genuinely summarises everything wrong with this movie's characterisation of odysseus.
because no, not in a million years, would odysseus "i yell my name and home address to the beast i blinded out of pride so he knows who tf i am." of ithaca, mr. "killed 108 men cock out" and "the reason for the fall of troy" just decide that finally, after he got home to his throne 20 years later to go "you know what man i am lowkey tired as hell from this i am old and weak and fragile let my chud son be king"
he simply would not do that he is soo prideful and selfish to do that.
and thatโs the problem, the movie tries its best to not show odysseus as immoral or selfish or prideful, for some reason. itโs too scared to show you the real king of ithaca, and at that point, why make an adaptation at all?
it turned one of the most interesting and complex greek heroes, who is characterised with traits usually associated with villains and cowards in ancient myths, into just some guy.
morganโs falls is josieโs norfolk
you ever check someoneโs profile on social media you havenโt seen in a while and you feel like athena checking on odysseus after ghosting him for years

This makes me feel like such a boomer, but I hate it how all media has been TikTok-ified and algorithm primed. Songs are shorter, designed for short viral clips rather than a full listening experience. TV shows and movies are sloppier, dragging on and on, assuming youโll be on your phone and have it only in the background. Even books have been chewed up and spat back out as easily consumable tropes, with bite-sized chapters and mannequins for characters. This late stage capitalism hellscape weโre in has made art into something you snack on rather than savor.
i think the best thing that came out of the odyssey movie is the amount of fame it gained, but unfortunately i feel like most of the people watching the movie will never end up reading the book
