Society: Autistic people are suffering!
Society: (discourages happy stimming, mocks special interests, constantly makes fun of autistic behaviours and keeps telling us we're "weird", tells autistic people not to talk positively about autism)
Society: As we said, autistic people are suffering!
Thatadhdfeel when an adhd reddit thread is how you learn that sitting with your legs up on the chair well into adulthood is an adhd thing.Ā
wait seriously? not sitting in chairs properly is an adhd thing?Ā
(i mean iād guess it could be a thing for many other reasons butā¦huh.)
Iāve never seen and canāt find any research on this, but my experience both as ND and in the field is that sensory issues (which come with ADHD, ASD, and SPD) usually lead to unusual sitting and/or standing postures.
Think about it though. Think about a regular standard chair, think what itās like to sit on it. Itās pretty uncomfortable, right? Wrong! Most people actually have no trouble sitting on regular chairs! thatās why they are designed the way they are! most people can sit on them just fine without squirming or feeling pain or feeling the need to fit their legs onto the seat too!
And if this thought, that chairs arenāt just badly-designed discomfort-items, is as mind-boggling a thought to you as it is to me, you probably arenāt all that neurotypical (I wonāt say either way about it being ADHD specific since I donāt have ADHD as far as I know, but Iām not neurotypical).Ā
What the heckie?
I mean, Iām also short, so I just always assumed that was my problem with being comfortable in chairs.
But even in the car, I end up scrunching into the pressure stim of having my legs crossed or under me, so!
yeah this is def an autism/ADHD/etc thing. you see it all the time in coded characters as well
shout out to all the peeps with ocd, dermatillomania, trichotillomania and other compulsive based disorders that people try to write off as just a ābad habitā
your struggles are valid and you are bigger than your condition and also ily

now Iām trying to figure out all the little autism tells
we tend to keep our faces really still? like allistics have little shifts constantly, they move their faces so. fucking. much. and itās totally involuntary? they also hold their jaws differently I think??
autistic folks tend not to know what to do with our arms unless weāre stimming whereas allistics seem to just⦠naturally have their arms at their sides. but differently. thereās a certain intentionality to how autistic people place our limbs. we have to sorta put them somewhere, where as allistics have like⦠a resting position that they donāt have to think about.
we tend to look around and intentionally mimic others more than allistics. allistics mimic but they do so unconsciously. because we have to think about it, we donāt do it according to the same rules which means we often get in trouble for not mimicking correctly.
stimming is by far the easiest tell, as is the stiffness of when someone is trying very hard not to stim. you can see it, and sometimes Iāll see it and start visibly stimming to see if the other person will relax and start as well. or if someone else is visibly stimming, I will as well to see if they notice.
Iām sure thereās other tells I canāt think of, I know we frequently have unusual gaits when we walk, but yeah. thereās a reason that most everyone I gravitate towards turns out to be autistic, especially if I meet them irl.
End of the year asks: 9 and 19, please.
9. Best month for you this year?Ā
Iām honestly really not sure about this one, mostly because Iām really bad at keeping track of time and when things happened in relation to each other. This past month or so has been pretty good for me (mostly because of people Iāve been talking to), and July was quite good if Iām remembering correctly.Ā
I answered question 19 in the previous ask :)Ā
Thanks! <3
19, 20, 23 :)
19. What are you excited about for next year?Ā
Iāve been accepted to start an animal management course at a college not too far away from me starting next year, and Iām super happy about that!! Iām also hopefully going to meet up with some internet friends if I can save enough money.Ā
20. Whatās something you learned this year?Ā
Donāt keep trying to do something if itās making your life worse, even if people act like itās your only option.Ā
23. If you could send a message to yourself back on the first day of the year, what would it be?Ā
āThings are gonna be kinda weird, and youāre gonna cry a lot, and your birthdayās gonna be awful, but itās okay. People wonāt abandon you, youāre gonna make friends, and youāre gonna survive. Also - please go to the hospital sooner than you think you need to. It will save you a lot of hassle.āĀ
Thanks for asking!! <3

To other autistic people, how do you feel when it comes to getting surprise/unexpected gifts?
I have some kind of combination reaction of disliking surprises and also being quite poor, because first of all surprises make me very nervous, and secondly I'm too broke to get the person something in return.
āItās only a trigger if it causes horrible flashbacksā is so utterly divorced from how the concept of a trigger is used by actual real therapists
a thing doesnāt have to cause traditional flashbacks to be a trigger. a trigger can be a thing that causes:
- panic attacks - emotional flashbacks* - anxiety episodes - paranoia/delusions - hallucinations - seizures - rage episodes - manic episodes - depression spikes - suicidal thoughts - dissociative episodes - sensory overload - obsessions and compulsions (as in OCD)
and probably more things than that, i donāt know all the possible things. Iām not trained in clinical psychology, but neither are all the assholes who say āItās not a real trigger unless it gives you flashbacksā
* an emotional flashback is a type of flashback where you feel the emotions associated with the trauma happening to you while still on some level knowing that the trauma isnāt currently happening to you. this is a more common type of flashback than the traditional kind.
tl;dr the word trigger in clinical psychology (the field of therapists) can refer to many things other than traditional flashbacks. stop telling ppl āthatās not a trigger unless it gives you flashbacks,ā because you are utterly fucking wrong.
ā¢Addiction relapse.
In simpler terms, anything that causes a worsening of symptoms is a trigger. This applies to physical illnesses too, (foods can be migraine ātriggersā for example). Anything that causes a worsening of your symptoms is a trigger for those symptoms.
Yes to all of this.
However.
That is not my issue with people saying they are triggered. My issue is when idiots use it like a catch all phrase, like a meme to say āthis is annoyingā 'this is grossā 'this is too cuteā 'this trigged me to laughā 'i dont like this.ā
When people use triggered as a meme, they completely disregard and destroy the genuine, clinical and psychological significance an actual trigger has. They are completely invalidating everyone who actually has triggers. Triggers are not things to joke about. It is not funny. It is not okay. You canāt say you are triggered just because you dont like something. There needs to be an actual impact unpon your mental well being. If itās not impacting your mental health, then shut up or find another meme to use.
Mental health is not a meme.
C-PTSD Symptoms
Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a type of PTSD that is caused by severe, repeated trauma, such that involves captivity, manipulation, and entrapment. It is trauma that is long-term and involves an inability for escape. This trauma occurs long enough to deform oneās sense of identity and self.
There is no mandated list of criteria for C-PTSD in the DSM-5, but there areĀ six clusters of symptoms that are currently used for diagnosis. These major, core symptoms of C-PTSD are:
Emotional Dysregulation - This involves severe mood swings/dysphoria, impulsive behaviour, self-harm, and suicidal preoccupations. This could result in explosive anger, or extremely inhibited anger, or both. It could also result in either compulsive or extremely inhibited sexuality (i.e. hypersexuality or sex repulsion/trauma-induced asexuality, or both.) This also involves difficulty expressing and communicating emotions.
Consciousness Instability - Forgetting traumatic events or reliving them is a part of a struggle with consciousness. Sometimes reliving trauma can be either through intrusive thought, or preoccupation with the trauma. This also involves dissociation, which can cause severe consciousness interruption and memory gaps.
Self-Perception Issues - The trauma that causes C-PTSD messes with the ego, so its symptoms results in a skewed perception of self. One might feel helpless, full of shame and guilt, like a constant victim or a horrible person, feel defiled and disgusting, and/or believe they are completely separate from other human beings altogether.
Distorted Views of the Perpetrator - Becoming preoccupied with a perpetrator, whether itās allotting total power to them, developing a preoccupation with them (such as revenge or seeking to find others exactly like them), or clinging onto the idea of being special to the perpetrator, would all be examples of distorted views.
Struggle With Interpersonal Relationships - Avoidance, distrust, paranoia, a sense of inability to connect with others. One with C-PTSD might also be constantly searching for aĀ āsaviourā figure, and could also go to great lengths for self-protection.
Loss or Change in System of Meanings - The beliefs one held before trauma changing or going away completely, such as religious faith, or one being succumbed with despair or feeling like there is no hope.
Outside of the six clusters of general symptoms, the other symptoms often associated with C-PTSD are:
Revictimization - Those with C-PTSD are particularly vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. Many will be revictimized if they are not taught how to read red flags, as those with C-PTSD may seek to relieve trauma without realizing it because they donāt know anything else.
Hypervigilance - Increased anxiety and sensory input will make the survivor hyperaware of everything in their environment. This may result in paranoia, in extreme jumpiness, etc. Someone with C-PTSD will be constantly feeling like they are in a dangerous situation, and thus be hypervigilant due to that. (This may cause someone to be constantly in fight mode, or flight mode, or freeze mode, etc.)
Unexplained Physical Symptoms - Hypervigilance exhausts the body. This is what most professionals believe leads to chronic pain, gastrointestinal issues, headaches, nausea, chest pain, and various other physical symptoms that range from mild to severe. This pain cannot be explained by other existing medical conditions.
Dissociation - Degrees of dissociation range. It is common for those with C-PTSD to deal with chronic dissociation, which can lead to emotional numbness, feeling unable to focus, inability to connect to oneās identity or reality (depersonalization and derealization), and memory loss. To a severe degree, it may result in identity splitting, which would lead to comorbidity with Dissociate Identity Disorder.
Substance Abuse - Itās not uncommon for those with C-PTSD to struggle with substance abuse, whether itās alcohol, drugs, smoking, etc. Some may also use sexual contact in the same way.
Attachment Issues - C-PTSD can cause various problems with attachment, including hyperempathy or a lack of empathy, an inability to accurately perceive other peopleās motives, isolation, seeking out codependency, feeling unable to depend on others at all, and not knowing where personal boundaries lie for themselves or others.
Cognition Problems - Executive dysfunction, inability to pay attention, communication problems, sensory overload, object impermanence.
āwhat if we finally started to treat mental illness the same way we treat physical illnessā
then weād be treating it just as badly as we do now.
Yes. Yes. Yes yes. As a person living with chronic illness and disability I want to scream everytime I see things like āwhat if we treated mental illness the way we do physical illnessā
we already fucking do: people with chronic illness will struggle to get adequate medical attention when we need it, we will be told to suffer pain constantly because itās ānot healthy to be on medication all the timeā, when a diagnosis canāt be found we get shuffled to the next doctor, we get told we are too young or too pretty or too smiley or too active to be sick, the only difference is we will get turned away from ERs immediately after weāre stabilized, fuck it happened to me today. The people in our lives will get impatient with us, strangers will treat us rudely for having to use disabled parking spaces or transit seats while ānot looking sickā
It fucking boggles my mind how we can have conversations on ableism that shit so heavily on the rest of the disabled community
When people say "treated like physical illness" they really mean "treated like visible, temporary physical illness".
This is getting on my fucking nerves, so Iām just going to say it here:
Adults who need high levels of support in daily living are not children.Ā
āMental ageā is a concept rooted in eugenics, and it doesnāt actually exist.
No one should be robbed of agency or dignity because of their need for support. Oh, also, while weāre at it (since disability rights activism that doesnāt tackle age-related oppression is bullshit), kids deserve to be treated with respect too. Shouldnāt be a controversial statement, but it is.
Most people neglect to mention this, but ifĀ ābeing treated like a childā equates toĀ ābeing robbed of agency and dignity,ā thereās something fundamentally wrong with the way we treat children.Ā

Me: āI have a debilitating chronic illness that causes persistent fatigue and pain. It often prevents me from engaging in everyday activities such as leaving the house, meeting with friends or even standing for short periods of time.ā
Someone: āHave you tried exercising?ā
