Like I don’t mean a one to one parallel between male and female and Moons and Suns, but more like the way they treat Moons, Suns, and Eclipses, both socially and physically, resembles a (flawed) sex and gender binary.

When the Celestials are first manufactured, they are either Suns, or Moons.* They have minor physical characteristics that indicate their “sex” (Suns have rays and a warm color palette, and Moons do not have rays and have a cool color palette. Whether the hats are a sex characteristic is up to interpretation, but I’d say it’s at least a social norm for Moons, sort of like having long hair with women.)* Based on that and that alone, they get treated differently on a social level. Suns are stereotyped as energetic, nitpicky, rule-following, and caregiving. Moons are stereotyped as lazy, insensitive, aggressive, intelligent, and independent.

*But, these sex characteristics aren’t always accurate, and there isn’t just Suns and Moons. Eclipses are shown to be either a mix of sex characteristics, like with Ruin and Clipper, or completely outside of the sex binary, like with Eclipse, Lunar, and Solar. Even though there are so many Eclipses, they’re still treated like an exception to the rule and not a part of the bigger picture. In the beginning, Ruin was treated with disgust over his mixed traits. Eclipse and Solar are constantly being forced into a “Sun” or a “Moon” pigeonhole. People treat Eclipse like a Moon with Sun characteristics, and Solar like a Sun with Moon characteristics, even though they exist outside of that binary. In a way, Eclipses are representative of an intersex, either with mixed traits or completely new ones that change the “sex binary” of Suns and Moons into a spectrum.

And sometimes, we see a celestial with intersex traits who still identifies as a Sun or a Moon! For example, Moon visits a dimension where there is a Sun that murders his Moon. That Sun has a red hat on! If you interpret hats as a sexual characteristic, then he could be seen as an intersex Sun. If you interpret hats as a social characteristic for Moons, then he could be seen as an intersex Moon. Sundroid was able to change his appearance to a Moon model at will, but he never used it because he identified as a Sun.

This makes the social dynamics of the Celestials so much more interesting, because we get to see characters who struggle to separate their assigned “sex” and their identity as a person. For example, Solar.

Solar was manufactured as an Eclipse. He’s intersex. His entire upbringing, his Moon treated him like a defect. Not a Sun or a Moon, so instead, a mistake. An it. Even now, in the current dimension, he still has those internalized feelings about Eclipses. He doesn’t want to be seen as an Eclipse anymore. He doesn’t see how being an Eclipse is a morally neutral thing. So, he changed himself to get away from that identity. One would hope that he could reconcile his feelings about his sex, and then be both comfortable with his sex as an Eclipse, and his celestial identity as “Solar”. He doesn’t have to go be valid obviously, but it’d probably be healthier if he did.

Nexus is another good example of a celestial “transitioning” into something other than their assigned “gender”. She was assigned Moon, based off of her sex being Moon. But she clearly felt she was different from Moon. She transitioned from a Moon to something different. Once again, since she’s the only Moon we’ve seen transition into her specific “gender”, I guess we can say she transitioned into Nexus.

Ruin and Clipper can be seen as examples of intersex pride. Ruin was berated and mocked for being intersex. He was called a freak, an amalgamation, a ruined Sun and Moon. And, he decided to reclaim his identity for himself. Fine, he was a ruin, and he was proud of it. Sun and Moon are dead and he killed them. He wouldn’t change himself for anyone. Clipper is accepted in his community, and though he does occasionally struggle with thinking about what it would be like if he was a Sun or a Moon, he wouldn’t change himself either.

There’s so many minor examples of this in other characters, too. Dark Sun is housing a Sun whose sex is “Moon” (from the dimension where they swapped roles). Francis and Frank are intersex, and identify as a Sun and Moon respectively. Sundroid has two different modes where he could be either a Sun, or a Moon, and he chooses to be a Sun. There could be a celestial that switches between Sun, Moon, and Eclipse presentations.

Moons are seen as intelligent and capable but also violent or lazy

Suns are seen as compassionate and supportive but also as childish and idiotic

Nexus was seen as a Moon, and therefore intelligent and independent, but then she was both forced into becoming the “intelligent” moon, and also was left alone while grieving Solar, because Sun says that Moons like being alone! Her psychosis was directly fueled by her not receiving any support when she was grieving, and that was caused by stereotypes surrounding her celestial status.

A moon might not be believed when they say that their Sun abused them; we see this directly with Dark claiming that all Moons are perpetuators and all Suns are victims. They are assumed to be aggressive, and the only reason to keep them around being their skills around tech. They are assumed to have a Killcode, seen with TEAPS Moonlight, and they are often forced into isolation.

TEAPS Moonlight is also a good example of how Moons are often forced to be “cool” or nonchalant. They aren’t allowed to express their emotions in the same way as Suns, because not only is that a sign of Killcode-induced aggression, but it’s also not like a Moon to openly talk about their interests. Moonlight seems to be a gamer, and only be interested in coding as far as making his own game goes. He also likes wolves, and along with Sunlight, seems to be a furry. Both of them are mocked, but for different reasons.

Sunlight is mocked due to the way that furries are associated with sex; his desire to hang out with the Sun and Moon from the wolf dimension is seen as some sort of kink or sexual attraction, which is shamed because Suns aren’t supposed to want those sorts of things (despite him never seeming to have that sort of idea anyway). Moonlight is mocked because his display of a genuine curiosity, not an irony-laden one, isn’t how Moons behave. They aren’t supposed to be cringe, they aren’t supposed to enjoy non-casual hobbies, unless it’s welding or making bombs or other violent acts.

Suns are vilified when they aren’t able to be motherly and compassionate, but also are mocked for being soft! They have to be honest, but not blunt, they have to be kind to everyone, but not so kind as to be naive. They have to be pure, not knowing anything about sex or wanting anything like that, but also have to take on a parental role easily.

Eclipses are violent, manipulative, ugly, evil. Their love is seen as narcissistic and their kindness is seen as hiding a motive. Even those that are constantly kind are seen as an exception, like with V1 Solar, and any anger is seen as the wild nature of an Eclipse failing to be kept in check. Eclipses are constantly demanded to prove their innocence, even upon creation.

Ruin Eclipses, or Eclipses that come from a combination of Sun and Moon, are seen as unstable and flighty. They are so rare within the universe that we don’t even have many examples; we have TEAPS with the broken Eclipse from Puppet’s dimension (Jigsaw or Jig, I’ve seen them called), we have TEASS’ Clipper, and we have TSAMS Ruin. They’re so rare that they are referred to as “Ruin” eclipses instead of some other, less derogatory name. They are seen as something dirty and defiled, almost taboo from how Sun and Moon react. Even before Ruin’s body was mangled, his combining was seen as a desecration, and his creator calls him a freak and a monster because of it. An amalgamation. Clipper seems to be mostly supported, but he’s also always been afraid of not fronting because of how people would react to Sun or Moon being in control. Saturn is afraid of Moon, and we see that Sun and Moon’s anger towards her is stemmed from the way that her fear only solidifies Clipper’s decision to stay in control.

People Love to call Dark a moon racist, but his attitude about moons always felt very radfem-y. The idea that moons are inherently stronger and prone to violence while suns are weaker but otherwise Better due to some inherent thing only suns have feels almost one to one with how radfems talk about men and women. Hell he's even got bullshit made up statistics about how moons are invariably hurting and killing their suns across the multiverse.

How he structured the haven feels so much like women's shelters that wont even let boys stay with their mother. Like "afab only" housing. Hell im p sure any moons in the haven canonically have their own section to avoid "triggering the suns' trauma"

Hell Eclipses don't even exist as a variable in his world view, they dont neatly fit into one of his two boxes so theyre discarded from the conversation entirely. Exactly how intersex and nonbinary people are ignored in radfem rhetoric
