Roddy McDowall as Ariel in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, 1960. McDowall took the ethereal role of Prospero’s spirit servant in a lavish television production presented as part of The Hallmark Hall of Fame. Maurice Evans starred as Prospero, with Richard Burton as Caliban and Lee Remick as Miranda. Broadcast by NBC on February 3, 1960, the production was an ambitious attempt to bring Shakespeare to American television audiences on a scale and with a distinguished cast more commonly associated with the stage. McDowall’s striking, otherworldly appearance as Ariel remains one of the production’s most memorable visual elements.
