Original Fiction

I've reset the target deadline from November 31 -- obviously not an option -- to March 10. That's the last day before my spring break, which means I'd get to start the first draft during break. That puts me at a needed average of 190 words per day.

I watched a wonderful video by Abbie Emmons yesterday about writing goals, so I've gone ahead and set some for the year. I'm going to share them here for some accountability -- to the internet, I guess? -- and so I can go back and reflect at the end of the year by reblogging this. A reflection reblog. I like the alliteration of that.

Anyways. My goals:

1. Finish the zero-draft for The Only Ones.

2. Begin the first draft for The Only Ones. This is the biggest thing, as it entails reworking details and, possibly, the whole outline.

3. Find an alpha reader.

Edited to add: 4. Finish my languishing fanfiction series.

I didn't make it to the 50K NaNo goal and no, I don't wanna talk about it. Haha.

Since I've had a break from TOO, I've come up with several ideas of how I'd like to tweak some things in the novel. I do want to finish my zero draft first, but I am likely not going to pick back up on that until after Christmas, or maybe the New Year.

In the meantime, I'm doing some Marvel Ficmas drabbles over on @suitofvibraniumarmor. I'm doing some winter-related prompts and some Christmas-related prompts, so it's not all about the holiday for those who prefer to avoid that sort of thing.

I also have a poem I wrote about my hearing loss, if anyone is interested in that? I'm not typically a poet, but November's Author's Club meeting was focused on poetry and I was inspired, so I rolled with it. Might post it here, we'll see.

We leave town late Wednesday afternoon. Between this novel, work, and grad school, I have SO MUCH to do before we leave for Indiana.

But I'm so mothereffing determined to finish this out and win NaNo!

“Why do I look so human?” Kai wondered aloud. “If I’m not human … I mean, I bleed red. I look human. My anatomy is all human. I’m prone to human illness. I—”

Jupiter stopped him with a hand in the air. “Archimedians and Elarans are both humanoid, but also, Archimedians are well-known for adapting to their surroundings. The younger you are, the more you adapt. You were only a few Earth months old when you were given to the humans, so you essentially grew up as a human. Back among your people, there’s no telling what changes will take place for you. Take them all in stride, Kai.”

He wanted to ask more questions, but the carrier had landed and was already decompressing. Jupiter led him to the same airlocked door where they had entered the ship. With her hand on the door, she looked at him and opened her mouth to say something, but seemed to think better of it. Before she could open the door, Kai covered her hand with his.

“Say it, Jupiter.”

She pressed her lips in a thin line before she decided to oblige him. “If this is the last time we see each other, I want you to know that I’m sorry if I ruined your life. My intentions were good, but many good intentions have changed the lives of others negatively.”

Kai smirked. “On Earth we say that the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.”

Jupiter smirked, too. This felt more like the usual conversation between them.

“Yes, I can see where that might be accurate.” She gave him one last smile. “Are you ready for this? Once this door opens, you will no longer be Kai Kingsley. You will be Archimedes Acardis.”
